[Black Leprosy]
All forms of leprosy are caused by contracting evil wind and violating taboos or suffering harm. Initially, one may feel the skin and hair turning black, or experience intense itching as if insects were crawling under the skin, or see objects in front of the eyes like hanging silk threads. Speech may be erratic, and the heart often feels fearful and startled. Within the skin and flesh, there may be lumps resembling peaches or plums, hidden rashes that are red-black, and stubborn numbness in the hands and feet where needle pricks are not felt. The soles of the feet become painful and numb, making it impossible to walk on them. When eating, opening the mouth releases air, and speaking produces similar sounds. Sores appear on the body with alternating pain and itching, sometimes feeling like insects crawling. The elbows may feel stiff as if bound by ropes. This is called Black Leprosy (Wu Lai). There is also a condition called Dark Leprosy (Hei Lai); since the symptoms of these two conditions are largely identical with minor differences, they are not recorded separately.
Pi Wan (Skin Pill) for Treating Black Leprosy
She Tu (Ophichan's Snake Slough), Ran She Tou (Python Head) [each calcined to retain properties], Kui Ge (Tridacna Gigas Shell) [one each], Wu Gong (Scolopendra Subspinipes) [one and a half], Meng Chong (Tabanus Orientalis) [remove head, legs, wings], Qi Cao (Phasioli Larva) [baked dry], Hong Niang Zi (Mylabris Phalerata) [remove head, legs, wings], Shui Zhi (Hirudo nipponica) [stir-fried with glutinous rice until cooked], Ban Mao (Mylabris Cichorii) [remove head, legs, wings], Zhi Zhu (Araneus Diadematus) [baked, three each], Ling Li Jia (Manis Pentadactyla Scale) [three pieces], Long Gu (Fossil Bone) [pulverized], Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxylum Bungeanum) [stir-fried], Chuan Da Huang (Rheum Palmatum) [unspecified amount], Huang Lian (Coptis Chinensis) [unspecified amount], She Xiang (Moschus) [pulverized], Gui Xin (Cinnamomum Cassia Bark Heartwood) [half tael each], Shui Yin (Mercurius) [half tael each], Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [finely pulverized], Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) [one tael each], Bai Fan (Alumen) [calcined], Hua Shi (Talcum) [pulverized, washed with water], Gan Sui (Kansui Root) [stir-fried with Sesame Indicum Seed until the seed is cooked, two and a half qian each], Fu Zi (Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root) [two pieces, processed, peel and umbilicus removed], Ba Dou (Croton Tiglium Seed) [peel, membrane, center oil removed], Lei Wan (Polyporus Umbellatus) [fifteen grains each].
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder and mix thoroughly. Blend with refined honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take one pill per dose, swallowed with warm water, once on an empty stomach and once before bed. If no effect is observed, increase the dose by one pill per administration. If pain occurs in the urethra during urination, it indicates that parasites are being expelled and have died. Observe the shape of the expelled matter carefully. If pain is severe, reduce the dose by one pill; if pain is mild, increase to two pills. Continue until recovery.
The above formula is a potent preparation for attacking toxins and expelling parasites. It should not be taken lightly unless one is certain that toxic parasites reside in the zang-fu organs and that the patient’s spirit and physical strength can withstand such purgative treatment. It should still be used in conjunction with Xue’s methods for treating wind-induced symptom variations (see *Za Bing Zhun Sheng*, Vol. 5).
For treating Black Leprosy, where the skin turns black, develops sores, and becomes swollen and painful, apply an arsenic-based insect-killing ointment externally.

Remove and place on wet ground, covered with paper over a basin, to dissipate the "fire toxicity" for the duration of the Sanfu period. Grind again into a fine powder. Mix with decoction of Maple Tree Gum (Feng Shu Jiao). Apply daily to the affected area until healed.
