If the symptoms are caused by excessive blood loss, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); if there is no response, use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix) to tonify Qi, and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) to nourish Blood. If the symptoms occur after ulceration, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). If Stomach Heat injures the body fluids, use Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction). If Stomach deficiency leads to insufficient body fluids, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction); if Stomach Fire is blazing, use Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction). If there is irritability, heat, thirst, and dysuria with a scanty, burning stream, this is deficient heat in the Kidney channel; only Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) can save the patient. There was one patient whose stasis had been removed, and whose diet and physical constitution were normal, yet he still suffered from fever, thirst, and pain, with chest oppression and phlegm. He was treated with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus). After two doses, his condition improved slightly. Then Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Cauda), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) were added, leading to recovery. Xue Ji treated over a hundred patients; among those who received corporal punishment without becoming Qi and Blood deficient, this was the only such case.
If there is Blood deficiency and blazing fire in the Large Intestine, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to deliver Runchang Wan (Moisten the Intestines Pill); or use pig bile for enema. If there is Kidney deficiency with dryness and fire, use Liawei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). If there is Qi deficiency in the intestines and stomach, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
If Yuanqi (Primal Qi) is weak, or if sexual activity is not regulated, or if purgative treatments are used improperly, causing necrotic tissue to spread upward, or rotting without pain, turning black and refusing to slough off, one must vigorously tonify Yuanqi; otherwise, life cannot be preserved. If joints of the hands and feet are severed, it is not harmful; if bones are broken but tendons remain connected, do not cut them off hastily; if the damage invades healthy flesh, it is incurable. If the Spleen Qi is regulated and tonified in advance, such disasters will not occur. Generally, if pus and stasis are retained internally, puncture them and administer Tuoli San (Support the Interior Powder); if trismus, urinary incontinence, and other symptoms resembling polio/lockjaw appear, urgently use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata); many patients survive.
There was a patient whose leg hurt after healing. Xue Ji reasoned that due to excessive pus and blood loss, although the sore had healed, the Qi and Blood of the Liver channel were not yet sufficient, allowing damp-heat to take advantage of the deficiency. Thus, he prescribed Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), and Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle) to dispel damp-heat and nourish Yin-Blood. The pain gradually ceased. Then Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) were removed, and the remaining formula was taken until full recovery.
