To treat venomous snake bites, immediately wash the wound with urine and squeeze out the toxic blood; then take saliva from the anus and apply it to the wound, followed by sucking the wound with teeth to seal it, applying dressing and protection, which is excellent and prevents pain and swelling. (The *Shanju Fang* records: applying dog feces to the affected area is also good.) Another method involves drinking one or two bowls of good vinegar to prevent the toxin from spreading with the blood; or drinking one or two cups of clear oil, which is also effective. Then tie the upper and lower ends of the wound tightly with a hair rope, followed by administering half a liang of *Baizhi* powder mixed with plain water. Within moments, yellow fluid will drain completely from the bite site, and swelling will subside. Another method uses equal parts of *Bai Fan* (Alum), *Xionghuang* (Realgar), and *Huang La* (Yellow Beeswax), formed into pills the size of a finger. Upon being bitten, melt the pill over a lamp flame and drip it onto the wound; or place a bamboo tube over the wound and drip the liquid in, preventing the toxin from spreading.
[Secular Experience] If bitten suddenly while walking on the road, immediately remove leg bindings and tie them tightly about one cun above and below the wound to prevent the toxin from damaging the tissues. Quickly use *Bai Fan* (Alum), melting it until boiling on the tip of a knife held over fire, and drip it onto the wound. After cooling, quickly pick off the scab with a long comb; toxic blood will then flow out. If dark swelling has not subsided, continue dripping until it resolves. In remote mountain villages or during night travel, if bitten and *Bai Fan* (Alum) is unavailable, quickly prepare moxa cones and apply five moxibustion treatments. Apply salt mixed with saliva to the affected area. If dark swelling persists, repeat moxibustion and application; toxic saliva will naturally flow out without penetrating inward to harm the body. (Moxibustion is also suitable for centipede bites.)
[Secular Experience] To treat all kinds of venomous snake bites, use transparent *Xionghuang* (Realgar), grind it into fine powder, mix with strong wine, and apply thickly to the wound. Fluid resembling saliva will flow out, and pain and swelling will subside immediately. Another formula mixes *Wojú* juice with *Xionghuang* powder to form cakes; when dry, grind into powder. Apply a small amount to the sore for immediate effect.
[Yanyi] A person bitten by a venomous snake fell into a coma. An old monk administered two qian of medicine mixed with wine, restoring consciousness, and applied the dregs to the affected area. After some time, another two qian were administered, eliminating all suffering. It was learned that the formula consisted of one liang of *Wulingzhi* (Trogopterus Dung) and half a liang of *Xionghuang* (Realgar), ground together. Later users found it universally effective. Another method uses equal parts of *Ganjiang* (Dried Ginger) and *Xionghuang* (Realgar), ground and applied. To ward off snakes, carry this mixture in a silk bag tied to the arm; males on the left, females on the right. Snakes avoid it due to the odor.
[Secular Experience] Treatment for venomous snake bites:
*Xixin* (Asarum), *Xiang Baizhi* (Angelica Dahurica) (each five qian); *Xionghuang* (Realgar) (two qian).
Grind into powder, add a small amount of *Shexiang* (Musk). Take two qian per dose, mixed with warm wine for effectiveness.
[Danxi] To treat all snake bites, chew *Xiang Baizhi* (Angelica Dahurica) thoroughly and apply to the affected area; also effective when taken internally mixed with warm wine. Crush *Shuiliao* (Persicaria Hydropiper) to extract juice for drinking, and apply the dregs to the wound. Extract juice from *Yingtao Ye* (Cherry Leaves) for oral administration, and apply dregs to the wound.
[Secular Experience] To treat all snake and insect bites, grind *Beimu* (Fritillaria Bulb) into powder, mix with wine, and have the patient drink as much as possible. After a while, the wine will exude from the wound as fluid. Once the fluid stops, apply the medicinal dregs to the sore for cure. For severe snake bites causing swelling, toxicity, and near-death state, use six fen of *Chonglou* (Paris Polyphylla) and six seeds of *Xusui Zi* (Euphorbia Lathyris), peeled and ground finely. Take one fangcun bi (measure) with wine; also mix a small amount with saliva and apply to the affected area for immediate relief. (*Cui Shi Haishang Fang*). Another method uses two qian of *Bai Fan* (Alum) orally to prevent toxin from attacking the heart. Another method grinds a small amount of *Jinxian Chonglou* (Paris Polyphylla) with water and applies it to the bite; or takes it as fine powder mixed with wine. Another method mixes leaves, *Yuxingcao* (Houttuynia Cordata), *Disong Jie* (Podocarpus Resin), *Zhoumian Cao*, and *Caojueming* (Cassia Seed), grinds them finely, and applies to the wound for excellent results. Drink juice extracted from *Diyu* (Sanguisorba Officinalis); also soak the wound in strong decoction for half a day for recovery. For snake bites, crush fresh *Malan Cao* (Kalimeris Indica, also known as Step-chrysanthemum) and apply to the wound; it also treats jaundice from alcohol, stops epistaxis, and aids healing of traumatic wounds. For snake bite sores, use one sheng of garlic, crush it, boil with one sheng of child's urine for three to four boils, and soak the injured area while hot for one shichen (two hours). If bitten but not yet swollen, chew garlic and apply, changing six or seven times. Another method boils one sheng of garlic with two sheng of milk until soft; take once on an empty stomach, covering with rice to settle the medicine, and repeat the next day. For various harmful insect and snake stings, crush *Disong* (Podocarpus) and apply.
[Hai Shang Fang] To treat viper bites, crush single-clove garlic and *Suanjiang Cao* (Portulaca Oleracea) to extract juice and apply to the bite site.
[Hai Shang Fang] To treat snake bites, men should hold twenty strands of pubic hair in their mouth, swallow the saliva, preventing the toxin from entering the abdomen.
[Secular Experience] To treat various snake bites, transmitted from snake catchers. The formula need not be complete.
*Da Qing* (Isatis Root), *Xiao Qing*, *Qingben Xiang*, *Wu Ye*, *Huochui Cao*, *Shanjue*, *Guoshan Long*, *Di Wugong*, *Tianmendong* (Asparagus Fern Tuber), *Baishaoyao* (White Peony Root), *Xiangru* (Elsholtzia).
Grind into fine powder. Grind *Baimuxiang* (Agarwood) separately, mix with raw white wine for oral administration; apply the dregs to the bite site, repeatedly effective.
[Shengji Zonglu] To treat snake venom poisoning, take one liang of *Shizhuyu* (Cornus Fruit), grind into fine powder, mix with cold water, divide into three doses, and recover immediately.
[Danzhi] To treat snake venom, eat ash from the root of *Gujiang* (Wild Arrowhead), and apply the paste. This plant is wild arrowhead. (*Guangji Fang*). For snake bite sores, soak in warm wine three times daily. Grind *Sigua Gen* (Luffa Root) and take with raw wine until intoxicated for immediate recovery. For snake bites, take a handful of *Xiaoqing* (Isatis Leaf), grind finely, add half a liang of *Xiang Baizhi* (Angelica Dahurica), mix with wine and take. Massage the affected area until yellow fluid appears, indicating efficacy. For severe snake bites causing black vision, lockjaw, and internal toxin, mix equal parts of *Gancao* (Licorice Root) and *Bai Fan* (Alum) into powder, take two qian mixed with cold water. Boil one sheng of garlic with two sheng of milk and eat. Simultaneously boil child's urine and soak the wound while hot. Drink two bowls each of sesame oil and rice vinegar rapidly to disperse the toxin. Apply human feces. Mix head dirt, earwax, well mud, and earthworm dung, crush and apply to the bite; recovery occurs when yellow fluid drains. Another formula adds *Baidingxiang* (Strix Owl Droppings).
Avoid sour foods and plums after snake bites; consuming them causes severe pain.
If a snake enters the mouth and seven orifices, cut the head of a sow's tail, drip blood into the mouth and orifices, and the snake will exit.
[Shengji Zonglu] If a snake enters the mouth during sleep seeking coolness and cannot be pulled out, cut open the snake's tail, insert two or three grains of pepper inside, wrap it, and the snake will exit.
To treat sudden entanglement by a snake that cannot be released, pour hot water over it; if no hot water is available, urinate on it.
