A question was asked: What is the condition of an abscess arising at the root of the teeth? The answer is: This is called Fu Ya Yong (Parulis/Abscess of the Gums), caused by heat-toxin in the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It is appropriate to administer Qing Wei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) or Huang Lian Xiao Du Yin (Coptis Decoction for Eliminating Toxins), or to puncture and drain the foul blood, after which it will heal.

Qing Wei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) treats internal heat accumulated from a diet rich in rich foods and sweets, resulting in swelling and pain of the lips and mouth, ulceration of the gums, pain radiating to the head and face, or accompanied by aversion to cold and fever.
Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 2 qian) Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, amount unspecified) Mu Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan, amount unspecified) Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, amount unspecified) Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine, 1 qian each).
Decoct these ingredients in water and take orally. If the pain does not cease, Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and similar herbs may be added in adjusted doses.

Another question was asked: What if there is swelling and pain of the gums, severe alternating chills and fever, persistent ulceration, and treatment as Gan Syndrome (Mouth Rot/Infantile Malnutrition) is ineffective? The answer is: This is Gu Cao Feng (Osteoperiostitis of the Jaw), also known as Chuan Sai Du (Cheek-Piercing Toxicity). It is caused by worry, overthinking, fright, and sorrow. Initially, it arises between the ear and the neck, hidden within the skin, presenting as a small nodule that gradually enlarges to the size of a walnut. Redness and swelling increase daily, occurring either above or below, left or right. The jaw becomes rigid and tight, preventing eating. First, use a goose feather to induce vomiting to expel wind-phlegm, then administer Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxins) and Huo Ming Yin (Life-Saving Decoction) added with Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi), Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri), and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). One must absolutely avoid using knives or needles. One person had the lesion punctured with medication, leading to the rise of wind-pathogen and deficient fire, vomiting bloody phlegm, delirium with foul odor, and death due to inability to eat. Another person had swelling and pain connecting the upper tooth roots to the exterior, followed by suppuration at the posterior tooth roots. Physicians all treated this as Ya Yong (Dental Abscess), but the wound failed to heal over time, with continuous discharge of thick pus. Upon inquiry, the cause was found to be a previous infection of Guang Chuang (Syphilis/Lues Venerea). Treating it as Jie Du (Condyloma/Syphilitic Nodule) resulted in recovery.

Dong Yuan Shen Gong Wan (Divine Efficacy Pill of Dong Yuan) treats individuals who consume excessive meat, resulting in severe halitosis that repels others. It treats dental Gan erosion, impending detachment of gingival tissue, loose teeth with unceasing bleeding.
Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, trimmed of roots, cleaned, washed with wine, 1 liang) Su Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi Rotundus, 0.5 liang) Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, soaked in wine) Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 qian each) Huo Xiang Ye (Herba Agastaches, 1 qian) Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae, 1 qian) Dang Gui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 qian) Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 2 qian) Lan Xiang Ye (Folium Pogostemonis, 2 qian; if unavailable, substitute with Huo Xiang Ye).
Grind these into a fine powder. Moisten with water and steam steamed dough to form pills, sized like mung beans. Take 100 pills per dose, increasing up to 200 pills as needed. Swallow with plain warm water after meals. It also treats bloody dysentery and continuous hematochezia where the blood is brown or purple-black, as well as intestinal bleeding. Take on an empty stomach with rice water decoction when the pulse is surging yet slow. It also treats numbness, upward rushing of Jue Qi (Rebellious Qi), and upward counterflow of rebellious Qi to the waist region.
