Shenxiao Danggui Ointment: Treats carbuncles, sores, and toxic swellings, as well as ulcerated wounds from scalds, burns, and corporal punishment. It is most effective in relieving pain and promoting the elimination of necrotic tissue while generating new tissue (Tui Chen Zhi Xin).
Formula: Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, 2 liang), Sesame Oil (MAYOU, 4 liang), White Beeswax (Baila, 5 qian; if Yellow Beeswax Huangla, 1 liang is used, it is even more effective).
Preparation: First, fry Radix Angelicae Sinensis in oil until scorched black, remove the dregs, add wax to melt, and the ointment is formed. In this formula, wax serves as the sovereign drug. Predecessors often stated that wax is a crucial medicine for external surgery, possessing the functions of generating flesh, stabilizing pain, reconnecting tendons, and tonifying deficiency, with merits that cannot be fully described. It is common to see litigious individuals who, after receiving corporal punishment, immediately consume about one liang of wax and drink one bowl of wine; after sleeping, the blood stasis dissipates and pain stops. Mild cases resolve immediately, and even severe cases that have become necrotic and ulcerated heal easily. This demonstrates the great efficacy of wax, which users must not ignore.
Shenyi Ointment (from *Jingyao*): Treats various malignant sores, boils, back carbuncles, and abscesses, with miraculous effects.
Formula: Exopeleus Vespa (Lufengfang, select those with many larvae, cut clean, 1 liang), Whole Snake Slough (Quanshetui, washed with salt water, dried by roasting), Radix Scrophulariae (Xuanshen, remove rhizome, each half liang), Herba Astragali Membranacei (Mianhuang, 7.5 qian), Minium (Huangdan, 5 liang, finely ground, added later), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, remove skin and tips, cut into small pieces, 1 liang), Human Hair (Nanzi Luafa, washed clean and dried, size of an egg), True Sesame Oil (Zhenmayou, 1 jin).
Preparation: For the above ingredients, first place sesame oil in a silver pot, along with human hair, and slowly simmer over a wind stove using alternating moderate and high heat. When the hair is scorched and completely melted, add Semen Pruni Armeniacae. When the almonds turn black, filter through fine cotton cloth to remove dregs. Then pour the refined clear oil back into the silver pot, add Herba Astragali Membranacei and Radix Scrophulariae, and simmer slowly for one or two hours. Remove the pot and place it on a cold wind stove for about half an hour until the heat subsides. Next, add Exopeleus Vespa and Whole Snake Slough, stir rapidly with a willow branch, return the pot to the fire, and continue stirring constantly over low heat until the mixture turns yellow-purple. Filter through cotton cloth, then return the clear oil to the pot. While cold, add Minium and stir urgently for a moment, then move back to the fire. Simmer slowly over alternating moderate and high heat, stirring constantly with a willow branch for over a thousand turns. When the medicinal oil turns black and forms beads when dropped into water, the ointment is complete. If the beads are loose, simmer for a short while longer until the standard is met. Store in porcelain vessels, sealed for future use. If accidental overheating makes the ointment too hard to use, add a little wax to melt and add sesame oil. Seal in porcelain, steam over a steamer, stir evenly while hot, and store. After preparation, place the porcelain vessel in a basin of clean water to eliminate "fire toxicity" for one day and night, rest for three days before use. Preparing this ointment is extremely difficult; one must patiently monitor the fire intensity. If the fire is too fierce, the "fire qi" of the medicine will flare up; caution is paramount. (There are many ointment formulas, but none surpass this in efficacy.)
[Zhu Danxi] Reat Sore Cold Ointment
Formula: Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, washed, dried, 1 liang), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, soaked in decoction, skin and tips removed, 100 units), Minium (Huangdan, finely ground, 6 liang), Young Willow Branches (Feineng Liuzhi, 3.5 liang, cut into inch-lengths, washed and dried), Young Peach Branches (Feineng Taozhi, 1 liang, cut into inch-lengths, washed and dried), Sesame Oil (Mayou, 1 jin).
Preparation: Heat the sesame oil first, add peach and willow branches, simmer until semi-charred. Wrap Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Semen Pruni Armeniacae in cotton cloth, simmer together until the willow branches are black and charred. Remove dregs, filter the oil until clear, and wipe the pot clean. Boil again, gradually adding Minium, simmering until drops do not disperse when tested in water.
Cold Sore Hot Ointment
Same as the Reat Sore Cold Ointment. Only change Radix Angelicae Sinensis body (Danggui Shen) to Radix Angelicae Sinensis tip (Danggui Shao), and reverse the proportions of peach and willow branches.
Shenxian Taiyi Ointment: Treats eight types of carbuncles and abscesses, as well as all malignant sores and soft boils, regardless of duration or whether pus has formed.
Indications: Snake or tiger bites, centipede stings, dog bites, scalds, burns, knife or axe wounds. Can be taken internally and applied externally. For back carbuncles, wash the sore with warm water, dry with clean soft cloth, apply the ointment spread on a bandage, and take with cold water. For Qi and Blood stagnation, take with warm wine. For red and white leukorrhea, take with Danggui wine. For cough, throat obstruction, and winding throat wind, wrap the ointment in new cotton and hold in the mouth to dissolve. For all wind-red eyes, shape the ointment into small cakes, apply behind the Taiyang acupoint, and take with Gardenia Decoction. For contusions and injuries, apply externally and take internally with Tangerine Peel Decoction. For lower back and knee pain, apply to the affected area and take with salt water decoction. For hemoptysis, take with Morus Alba Root Bark Decoction. For various fistulas, clean sores with salt water, spread on paper according to size, take one pill per dose (size of a cherry, coated with Tridacna Shell Powder). This ointment can be stored for ten years without spoiling; the older, the stronger. Another prescription for chronic lymphadenitis: same method, wash and apply with salt water, take one pill with wine. For women with menstrual obstruction, take with Licorice Decoction; treats all sores, boils, swelling, and pain. For sores, tinea, and scabies, refine a small amount of oil separately, mix with ointment, and apply.
Formula: Radix Scrophulariae (Xuanshen), Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chishaoyao), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, remove coarse bark), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdihuang) (each 1 liang).
Preparation: Coarsely crush the herbs. Soak in 2 jin of sesame oil: 5 days in spring, 3 in summer, 7 in autumn, 10 in winter. Simmer over fire until black, filter out dregs, add 1 jin of Minium, stir constantly with green willow branches until drops form beads in water and do not stick to hands. Pour into porcelain vessels, cover with bricks, bury in a cellar under a shady tree, cover with soil for three days to eliminate fire toxicity. To take internally, make pills the size of a chicken head.
Jinsi Wanying Ointment: Treats contusions and injuries, pain in limbs, shoulders, and back, and unbearable pain from cold-dampness Hong Kong foot (tinea pedis). Also for children with spleen malnutrition, dysentery, and cough who refuse medication.
Formula: Asphalt (Qingli, 2.5 jin), Radix Clematidis Chinensis (Weilingxian), Beeswax (Huangla) (each 2 liang), Semen Momordicae (Mubiezi, 28 units, shell removed, sliced and ground), Semen Ricini (Bimazi, 100 units, shell removed, ground), Myrrha (Moyao), Olibanum (Ruxiang) (each 1 liang, separately ground), Sesame Oil (Mayou: 2 liang in summer, 3 liang in spring/autumn, 4 liang in winter).
Preparation: First melt asphalt and Radix Clematidis Chinensis in a pot, stirring with locust or willow branches until scorched black. Filter through heavy cotton. Place asphalt in a water basin to cool into blocks. Weigh out 2 jin of pure asphalt, remelt in the pot, add sesame oil, beeswax, Ricinus paste, and Momordica paste. Stir constantly with locust/willow branches over low heat until drops do not stick to water and can be pulled into golden silk threads. If too hard, add oil; if too soft, add asphalt. Once standardized, add Olibanum and Myrrha. Without removing from the charcoal fire, stir hundreds of times with locust/willow branches. Filter through coarse cloth into a water basin, pull into golden silk threads, changing water frequently, soak for one day. Then stew in a small pot. For falls or carriage accidents, heat the ointment over fire and apply to painful areas until penetrating bone and muscle; verify by bathing several times with hot water to dissipate accumulated blood heat. For children's spleen malnutrition, apply to affected area; for dysentery, apply to abdomen; for cough, apply to upper back.
Shanying Ointment (from *Defu*): Treats various malignant sores, swelling toxins, back carbuncles, brain abscesses, deep-rooted abscesses, tooth swelling, contusions, bone setting, sprains, knife/axe wounds, and beating injuries. Also snake/insect venom, dog/horse bites, scalds/burns, lacquer dermatitis, and tinea/ringworm; heals upon application. Also treats breast abscess in women: make pills size of wu zi (Chinese quince seed), take 20 pills with fresh well water. For lung abscess and intestinal abscess, also make pills for oral administration, taken with warm wine, rice drink, or Platycodon and Licorice decoction. Avoid contact with hands eating meat or roasting over fire.
Formula: Premium Minium (Huangdan, 8 liang, finely ground), White Rosin (Baijiaoxiang), Clear Myrrha (Mingmoyao), Dripping Olibanum (Diluxiang) (all separately ground), Large Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Da Danggui), Sichuan Baizhi (Chuan Baizhi), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, skin and tips removed), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang), Aconitum Kusnezoffii (Caowutou), Aconitum Carmichaelii (Chuanwutou), Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chishaoyao), Areca Seed (Binglang), Dried Radix Rehmanniae (Shenggan Dihuang), Wild Chuanxiong (Tuxiong), Human Hair (Luafa, clean washed), Blue Pigment (Diqing) (separately ground, each 1 liang).
Preparation: Except for Olibanum and Myrrha, place 1 jin of fragrant oil in a ceramic stone pot, soak herbs overnight, simmer slowly until herbs are black. Add scallion whites and human hair, simmer briefly, filter through raw silk to remove dregs, reserving 1 liang of medicinal oil. Simmer the filtered oil slowly, add Minium, stir constantly with long willow and locust branches. When slight smoke rises, lift the pot and drip medicine onto water surface with willow branch; when it forms stable beads, the ointment is ready. If beads do not form, simmer further until ready. Lift pot, stir until no smoke, add powdered Olibanum, Myrrha, and White Rosin, mix evenly, and pour out. Collect reserved soaking oil and pot oil in the porcelain vessel. Sit the vessel in fresh water, changing water daily for three days to eliminate fire toxicity. If ointment is hard, add appropriate amount of beeswax and clear oil, mix well. (Making ointment is extremely difficult; patience with fire control is essential. Too strong fire causes fire qi to flare, losing medicinal properties and risking injury to the maker; be cautious.)
Xuanwu Ointment: Treats carbuncles, back abscesses, ding swellings, internal and external sores, yin transmission, all malignant sores, and head abscesses. Usable whether ulcerated or not. Greatly promotes pus discharge, disperses toxicity, relieves pain, and generates flesh. Frequently effective. For ding swellings, first puncture the center and surrounding areas with a silver comb or deer horn needle to release bad blood. Insert a Zhuidu pill (size of wheat grain) into the hole, then apply this ointment. If the sore is severely necrotic and difficult to patch, boil 2-3 slices of Gleditsia Sinensis, mix with oil and ointment to a thick paste, apply thinly. Pus may increase initially; drying occurs after few applications, which is ideal.
Formula: Large Croton Seed (Dabadou, remove shell and membrane), Semen Momordicae (Mubiezi, remove shell, each 2 liang pure), Minium (Huangdan, 4 liang, finely ground), Pure Clear Oil (Zhenqingyou, 10 liang), Young Locust and Willow Branches (Huai Liu Nenzhi, each 7 cun long, 7 strips, finely chopped).
Preparation: Follow previous methods to simmer into ointment for application.
Jinsi Ointment: Treats tendon and bone injuries, pain and sprains, wind-toxin malignant sores, and rheumatic wind-cold affecting tendons.
Formula: Tail of Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui Wei), Sichuan Baizhi (Chuan Baizhi), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, skin and tips removed), Radix Scrophulariae (Xuanshen), Pig Tooth Gleditsia (Zhuyazaojiao, remove skin), Raw Aconite (Caowu, raw chopped, each 3 qian), White Rosin (Baijiaoxiang, clear, 8 liang), Green Onions with Roots and Leaves (Lianxu Yecong, plump, 10 stalks), Blue Pigment (Diqing, clear, half jin), Olibanum (Ruxiang), Myrrha (Moyao) (separately ground to powder, each half liang), Beeswax (Huangla, clear, 1 liang), Human Hair (Nanzi Luafa, washed and kneaded, size of egg).
Preparation: Use half jin of clear oil, simmer and filter the eight ingredients according to previous methods. Add Rosin and Blue Pigment, mix evenly. Add Beeswax, stir again until no smoke, then add Olibanum and Myrrha.
Application Method: If sores have unclean pus and blood, or scabs obstruct, wash with medicinal water, dry, wait for moisture to evaporate, then apply ointment. After application, if yellow fluid, pus, and blood flow out, wipe from the side with paper. Change once daily; once fluid stops, change every two to three days until healed.
Changji Ointment: Treats chronic ulcers of various kinds; heals upon application.
Formula: White Candle Oil (Baizhuyou, 4 qian), Beeswax (Huangla, 8 qian), Fragrant Oil (Xiangyou, 8 qian), Large Maple Seed (Dafengzi, remove shell, cut fine, 5 qian), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, 3 qian), Strychnos Nux-vomica Flesh (Fanmubie Rou, cut fine, 2 qian), Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbai, 3 qian).
Preparation: Simmer together, filter out dregs. Add Alum (Kufan, 3 qian), Calomel (Qingfen, 3 qian), Litharge (Miduoseng, 5 fen, all finely ground). Simmer and filter the first seven ingredients, mix with the last three, wait to solidify. Make thin cakes according to sore size, pierce with pin to make dozens of small holes, apply to sore. Change daily if needed. Wash sore and cake with salt tea water before reapplying. Continue until healed.
