For red dysentery, add 2 Dou (Vigna angularis); for white dysentery, add 5 qian of Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum).
Yingsuke (Papaveris Pericarpium) treats dysentery with miraculous effect, but its nature is astringent and often causes vomiting. Since it is processed with vinegar and combined with Wumei (Pruni Mume Fructus), it does no harm. However, it should not be taken by those who vomit. Generally, dysentery was called "Zhixia" (Stagnant Downward Flow) in ancient texts, mostly caused by accumulated stagnation in the intestines and stomach. At the beginning of the disease, stopping diarrhea immediately is inadvisable. First, give 10-20 pills of Badou Yinggan Wan (Crotonis Semen Induced Pill) with White Plum Water to induce mild loose stools, then take the previous medicine, which will be effective. If the spleen and stomach are weak, use Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Rubrum), and Yingsuke (Papaveris Pericarpium) in equal parts, grind into powder, make pills with vinegar-boiled flour paste, size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with Wumei Water. It also treats acute diarrhea with unceasing flow. One dose cures it; doubling the efficacy is better. If nausea occurs, use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) or Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) and Muxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) to regulate stomach qi, and use Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction) boiled with Muxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) pills to stop vomiting. Dysentery is a heart-belly affliction, especially unsuitable for the elderly. If only mild agents are used throughout, effectiveness is difficult to achieve, leading to critical danger; by the time one wishes to take this strong medicine, it is too late. Drugs like Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix), Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) have bitter-cold nature and should not be taken lightly. For blood dysentery, use Weifeng Tang (Wind-Stomach Decoction) and Jiao'ai Tang (Donkey-hide Gelatin Decoction). For white dysentery, use Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate-the-Middle Decoction) and Zhenling Dan (Spirit-Shaking Pellet), used with caution. If five colors discharge simultaneously with unregulated diarrhea, use 1 liang of Shuwutou (Aconiti Radix Preparata), 1 fen of Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum). Current treatments for dysentery often use Zhuche Wan (Park-Chew Pill) or Huanglian Ejiao Wan (Coptis Donkey-hide Gelatin Pill). Only Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) thickens the intestines, but its nature is cold. If the accumulated pathogen is light, or for lingering intermittent dysentery, it is effective. If the disease is heavier, this cannot treat it.

Yang Zijian Wanquan Huming Fang: Currently, someone suffers from dysentery, pulse is minute and faint, searching again reveals deep and choppy quality. In this condition, if passing white dysentery, although severe, it is treatable. If passing blood, absolutely avoid fever; whole-body fever indicates death, fever lasting seven days indicates death. The above exposition, while insufficient to reach the origin of dysentery, clarifies its general outlines. Critics ask: As you said, from Jiazi to Guihai, every 60 years, there is never a year without dysentery. Yet nowadays, people suffer dysentery only in one year out of several. Why? Answer: In 60 years, there is never a year without Wood attacking Earth, Earth suppressing Fire, or Water clashing with Fire. But the governance of the Five Movements is like a scale. Within a year, the Qi numbers of the Five Elements control each other; if balanced, the disease naturally does not arise. If one Qi is excessive, or one Zang is surplus, dysentery arises instantly. Therefore, I have detailed the basics to enlighten students, hoping to avoid errors in diagnosis and treatment. However, toxic dysentery harms people differently; only Water Evil attacking the Heart is severe. When people first get dysentery, they start with chills and fever. After taking medicine, fever does not subside. Severe fever, vomiting upon eating, unceasing dysentery, heart heat like fire, desire to enter cool places, craving cold water, sudden urge to run madly, whole-body muscle pain, unable to touch. This condition is difficult to cure in 3-4 out of 10 cases. To treat Epidemic Toxic Dysentery, one must carefully read this formula discussion from start to finish, clearly understand the root of the disease, then take medicine. When Toxic Dysentery first appears, it starts with chills and fever, sudden headache, sudden high fever, frequent bowel movements, suddenly passing red dysentery, suddenly mixed red/white, suddenly only white dysentery, or starting with white then turning red, or starting with red then turning white. All are suitable for this formula. But when dysentery first starts, initially...
