Fangji Huangqi Tang (see Heavy Body). Wubi Tang (see Bi Syndrome).
Huotan Tang (from *Yangsheng*): Treats various phlegm diseases. I formulated this to complement Guntan Wan. Essentially, it uses Xiaochaihu Tang as the main base, combined with Qianhu Banxia Tang, with modifications based on Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing, 南星), Perilla Leaf (Zisu, 紫苏), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi, 橘皮), and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo, 厚朴). For those with chronic phlegm and lung qi stagnation, use Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) as the chief herb; for others, remove Chaihu and use Peucedani Radix (Qianhu, 前胡) as the chief herb.
Herbs: Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) [washed to remove soil and sprouts, 4 liang], Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) [washed to remove slipperiness, 4 liang], Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [removed internal and external decay, 3 liang], Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) [removed rhizome, avoid in qi stagnation], Red Licorice Root (Hong Gancao, 赤甘草) [each 2 liang], Perillae Fructus with Stem (Daigeng Zisu, 带梗紫苏), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) [peel removed], Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo, 厚朴) [rough bark removed, processed with ginger juice], Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing, 南星) [navel removed, each 2 liang], Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Boheye, 薄荷叶) [1.5 liang], Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) [rhizome removed, 1 liang, avoid if no anger/stress], Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike, 枳壳) [pulp removed, bran-fried, 1 liang].
For stroke patients, remove Chenpi and add Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, 独活). For chest/diaphragm discomfort, remove Chenpi, add bran-fried Aurantii Fructus Immaturus without pulp, and add peeled Red Poria (Chi Fuling, 赤茯苓). For those without internal or external heat, remove Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩); for the weak with internal heat, do not remove Huangqin, but add Costi Rhizoma (Nanmuxiang, 南木香). No other qi-regulating and phlegm-resolving formula surpasses this. The saying "qi disorders should not be tonified" stems from fear of cloying herbs blocking the flow; thus, these selected herbs are clearing, dispersing, warming, and draining, with neutral properties and effective results.
Erchen Tang (see Phlegm-Fluid Retention). Kongyan Dan (see Moving Bi).
Qianxing San (Zhu Danxi's Formula): Treats gout.
Herb: Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) [amount unspecified, soaked in wine, dried and powdered].

Herbs: Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) [stir-fried], Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) [stir-fried, peel removed].
Usage: Powder the herbs. Crush fresh ginger, boil in water, and mix with the powder. These two herbs have strong aromatic properties. For exterior-excess and qi-excess constitutions, a small amount of wine may be added as an assistant.
Alternative method: Use Ermiao San as the chief herb, add Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) and Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) [each 2 qian], Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) [each 1 qian], and Wine-stir-fried Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Weilingxian, 威灵仙) [0.5 qian]. Regular use harmonizes blood vessels, strengthens bones and tendons, and promotes qi and vessel circulation. Avoid peach, plum, sparrow, pigeon, and other blood-meat foods.
Da Qianghuo Tang (*Baojian* Formula): Mr. Zhang from Zhending Prefecture, who loved alcohol, fell ill in May with swelling and pain in finger joints, limited flexion and extension, similar symptoms in knees, epigastric fullness, heavy body, loss of appetite, nausea after eating, sallow complexion, and low spirit. In June, he sought my treatment.
His pulse was deep and slow; a slow pulse indicates Spleen involvement. *Nan Jing* states: "Shu points treat heaviness and joint pain." Shu points are governed by the Spleen, and the four limbs belong to the Spleen. Likely, his chronic alcohol consumption combined with seasonal dampness caused excessive dampness flowing into the limbs, resulting in swelling and pain. *Nei Jing* states: "All dampness-induced swelling and fullness belong to Spleen Earth." Zhang Zhongjing said: "Dampness flowing into joints causes limb irritation and pain." *Nei Jing* also states: "For dampness invading internally, treat with bitter-warm methods, disperse with bitter flavors, and drain with bland flavors." Furthermore, "Wind overcomes dampness." Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) and Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, 独活) are bitter-warm, penetrating joints to overcome dampness, so they are the Chief herbs. Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) is bitter-neutral; Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Weilingxian, 威灵仙), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) are bitter-pungent-warm, dispersing pathogens, so they are the Deputy herbs. Blood stasis causes pain; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) is pungent-warm to disperse; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) is sweet-warm to boost qi; Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie, 泽泻) is salty-neutral; Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) is sweet-neutral, guiding dampness and promoting urination via bland-draining methods, allowing flavors to combine and disperse dampness上下.
Herbs: Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) [each 1 qian], Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, 独活) [7 fen], Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) [rhizome and branches removed], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Weilingxian, 威灵仙) [rhizome removed], Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) [peel removed], Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie, 泽泻) [each 0.5 qian].
Usage: Cut into one dose. Add two cups of water, decoct to one cup, take warm. One dose before meals, one dose after meals. Avoid alcohol, wheat products, raw/cold, and hard foods.

Zhu Danxi treated a man, poor and overworked, who suddenly developed whole-body fever upon autumn cooling. His arms, wrists, legs, and hips were painful like needle pricks, worse at night than day. Wind-dispersing herbs increased pain; blood-invigorating herbs were ineffective. He seemed destined to die. Pulse was choppy and rapid in both hands, right stronger than left. Diet was normal, but he was emaciated. This emaciation resulted from severe pain, not the disease itself. I used Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) and Wine-Phellodendri Cortex (Jiu Huangbai, 酒黄柏) [each 1 qian], Raw Aconite Root (Sheng Fuzi, 生附子) [one slice], Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao, 生甘草) [3 fen], Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [5 fen], and five crushed Peach Kernels (Taoren, 桃仁). Decocted as one dose with a little ginger juice for spice. After four doses, remove Aconite, add Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝) [1 qian]. After eight doses, he reported urgent shortness of breath, insomnia, and slight pain relief. I suspected blood deficiency caused by excessive Mahuang, leading to Yang floating upward. I prescribed blood-tonifying, anchoring, and sour-astringent herbs. Siwu Tang plus Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) [2 qian], Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子) [12 berries] for two doses. Breathing stabilized, and he slept peacefully that night. Three days later, pulse rapidity decreased significantly, choppy pulse remained. Pain persisted but moaning stopped. He appeared weak but claimed otherwise. I prescribed Siwu Tang plus Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Peach Kernel (Taoren, 桃仁), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Arecae Semen (Binglang, 槟榔), and three ginger slices. After fifty doses, he recovered. One month later, pain recurred after carrying heavy loads, with reduced appetite. I repeated the formula adding Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) [3 fen]. After twenty doses, he fully recovered.
A man over sixty, impatient, suffered leg pain worsened by labor. I diagnosed deficiency alongside excess and prescribed blood tonification. Siwu Tang plus Peach Kernel (Taoren, 桃仁), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝), Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao, 生甘草) decocted, mixed with ginger-crushed Qianxing San, taken hot. After 30–40 doses, he recovered.
