Rabbit Skull Bone (Tou Gu)
Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. Main indications: Dizziness and headache, epilepsy (Dian Ji).
Minister Yuxi et al. verified the statement of Ri Hua Zi: The skull bone, along with hair and marrow, is burned into pills for inducing labor, aborting fetuses, and treating retained placenta or lochia after childbirth.
Rabbit Bone (Gu)
Main indications: Heat accumulation in the middle jiao causing thirst (Xiao Ke).
Minister Yuxi et al. verified the statement from *Yao Xing Lun*: Rabbit bone has a sweet taste. Ri Hua Zi stated that rabbit bone treats sores and scabies with wind-like itching (Chuang Jie Ci Feng) and Gui Zhu (a chronic infectious disease).
Rabbit Brain (Nao)
Main indications: Frostbite (Dong Chuang).
Rabbit Liver (Gan)
Main indications: Dim vision (Mu An).
Minister Yuxi et al. verified the statement of Meng Shen: Rabbit liver brightens the eyes; it can be made into pills with Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi) for oral administration. Additionally, it treats visual impairment caused by the upward rush of mineral drug qi (Dan Shi), where one cannot see objects clearly; it can be eaten raw, following the same method as consuming sheep liver. Ri Hua Zi stated that rabbit liver brightens the eyes, tonifies deficiency and fatigue, and treats dizziness and eye pain.
Rabbit Meat (Rou)
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. Main indications: Tonifying the center and replenishing qi (Bu Zhong Yi Qi).
Tao Hongjing stated: Rabbit meat soup is beneficial to people. Pregnant women should not consume it, as it may cause cleft lip in the fetus. Rabbit meat should not be eaten with white chicken meat, as it may cause yellowish complexion.
Consuming it with otter meat may cause Dun Shi (a latent epidemic disease or pain). The Tang Dynasty *Xin Xiu Ben Cao* annotation states: Rabbit skin and hair, when burned to ash and taken with wine, effectively treat difficult labor with retained placenta, and blood stasis attacking the heart causing abdominal distension and impending death. Rabbit scalp treats Gui Zhu and toxic vapors penetrating the skin causing needle-like pain. It also states: Rabbit fat treats deafness.
Current verification based on Chen Cangqi's *Bencao Shiyi*: Rabbit is cold and neutral in nature, treating heat-related damp bi syndrome. Hair, when burned to ash, treats moxibustion wounds that do not heal. Bone treats chronic scabies; grind with vinegar for external application. Meat, if consumed long-term, weakens yang energy and causes sallow complexion. Eating it with ginger causes heart pain. Head treats difficult labor; burn to ash and take with wine. Rabbits have five or six orifices; young rabbits are born through the mouth. Therefore, pregnant women avoid eating rabbit meat not because of cleft lip, but due to this birth mechanism. Minister Yuxi et al. verified *Yao Xing Lun*: Rabbit meat paste made in the twelfth lunar month removes pea pox (smallpox/chickenpox) in children. Wax hair decoction washes pea pox, or hair applied externally is effective. Meng Shen stated: Rabbit meat can be eaten from the eighth to eleventh lunar months; it is suitable for those taking mineral drugs but generally damages sexual function and obstructs blood vessels. Ri Hua Zi stated: Rabbit meat treats thirst and strengthens the spleen. Raw consumption suppresses dan toxicity.
*Tujing* states: Rabbits were not originally recorded with specific origins; now they are ubiquitous and considered a delicacy. Rabbit orifices number six or seven; young rabbits are born through the mouth, hence pregnant women are forbidden to eat them. Skull bone treats dizziness/headache and epilepsy. Brain treats frostbite. Liver treats dim vision. Meat tonifies the center and qi. However, its nature is cold; excessive consumption damages primordial qi. Do not eat with chicken meat. Marrow and fat both treat deafness. Hair decoction washes pea pox; hair ash treats non-healing moxibustion wounds. Skin, hair, and head burned to ash and taken with wine treat difficult labor with retained placenta. *Bixiao Fang* treats seasonal epidemics with vomiting and inability to eat: Take rabbit head, skin, and hair from the twelfth lunar month, burn until smoke ceases, break open and grind into black ash powder. Take one cubic inch dose with drink juice to restore appetite; repeat if ineffective. Do not over-burn; frequent use is extremely effective. Cui Yuanliang's *Haishang Fang* treats wasting-thirst with emaciation and urinary incontinence: Rabbit bone boiled with barley seedlings juice is very effective. Another formula: One rabbit, skinned, claws and viscera removed, boiled in 1.5 dou of water until tender and bones separate from meat. Strain meat/bone, retain 5 sheng of liquid, clarify and cool. Drink when thirsty. Severe cases require no more than three rabbits. Also, brush-tip ash treats urinary retention, frequency/difficulty, dribbling, genital swelling, sudden evil invasion, and rectal prolapse. Use old brushes, burn to ash, take with water.
Dietary Therapy: Rabbit skull bone shares properties with meat, sour taste. Verified: From August to October, rabbit meat roasted with wine is suitable for those taking mineral drugs. Note: Its cold nature helps treat related conditions. Rabbits dying with closed eyes are poisonous if eaten. Eating in the second lunar month harms the spirit. Rabbit meat with ginger causes cholera-like disorder. *Shenghui Fang*: For cracked hands/feet forming sores, apply raw rabbit brain marrow externally. *Waitai Miyao* & *Bixiao Fang*: Treat leukorrhea. Burn rabbit skin until smoke ceases, grind to powder, take one cubic inch dose with wine until cured. *Zhouhou Fang*: Treat sudden moon-erosion sores (facial ulcers) in adults/children. On full moon night, collect rabbit feces and place inside a toad's belly, burn to ash, apply to sore. *Baiyi Fang* & *Huo Shao Yi Po Fang*: Burn white hair from rabbit abdomen into glue, apply to hair/sore; heals immediately upon hair fall. *Jingyan Fang*: Labor-inducing pill (Cu Sheng Dan): Take two rabbit heads, extract marrow in twelfth lunar month, spread on clean paper, air dry. Place together with Tolu Resin (Tong Ming Ru Xiang), ensuring cleanliness, fasting, incense burning, and bowing to the North Emperor praying for divine assistance. Expose to dew overnight. Next day before sunrise, mix with pork, form pills the size of chicken heads, store in ventilated paper bags. Take one pill with vinegar water; if labor doesn't start, take another with cold wine. This immortal formula is absolutely effective. *Meishi Fang*: Rabbit meat with dried ginger causes cholera-like disorder. *Shiyi Xinjing*: For unquenchable thirst in wasting-thirst: Boil one rabbit skull bone, drink the juice. *Boji Fang*: Treat threatened miscarriage. Take one rabbit head/marrow from twelfth lunar month, spread evenly on paper, dry, take with cardamom wine. *Shengjin Fang*: Treats forehead/back carbuncles, boils, malignant sores. Finely chop rabbit head from twelfth lunar month, seal in bottle; longer is better. Apply thickly on cloth to hot/painful areas like ice; change frequently. *Jiyan Fang*: Treat hemorrhoids with persistent bleeding/pain. Slow-fire roast "Wanyue Sha" (rabbit feces) until yellow, grind. Take 2 qian with 0.5 qian Frankincense (Ru Xiang), warm wine on empty stomach, 3-4 times daily. *Zimu Milu*: Treat postpartum uterine prolapse; apply rabbit skull ash externally. *Baopuzi*: Rabbits live 1000 years; turn white at 500 years. Rabbit blood mixed with female elixir summons two goddess servants. *Book of Rites*: Remove the rump when eating rabbit. Shen Cunzhong recorded "Jumping Rabbits" in northern Khitan borders: short front legs, long hind legs, jump several feet, collapse when stopping. Found in Qingzhou, captured during diplomatic mission. *Erya* calls this "Jue Tu" or "Qiong Qiong Ju Lv".
*Yanyi* states: White-haired rabbits fully possess Metal Qi, especially effective medicinally. Other rabbits are edible in late autumn when Metal Qi is complete. In spring/summer, taste changes; elbow hair is used as bait for eagles to digest fat for faster hunting. Paste making requires five flavors. If one has pea pox and eats this, toxins may flare severely causing disfigurement.
