Dan Xiong Ji (Red Rooster)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly warm, slightly cold. Non-toxic. Main indications: Treats women's metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (red and white vaginal discharge); tonifies deficiency; warms the middle jiao and stops bleeding; treats chronic traumatic ulcers; unblocks the spirit; detoxifies; wards off ominous influences.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Meng Shen: Treats Baihu disease (a condition characterized by severe joint pain). Rice can be spread on the affected area for the chicken to eat, which is effective. Alternatively, apply hot chicken manure to the affected area for heat, and place the chicken under the patient's bed. Its liver can be used in kidney-tonifying formulas; mix with Guanxue (Rooster Crown Blood), Tianxiong (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root prepared product), Guixin (Cinnamon twig inner bark), and Taiyangfen, pill and take orally. This benefits Guanxue and treats vitiligo. Chicken manure treats Baihu wind and is applied externally for wind-pain.
Chicken Head: Mainly kills ghost pathogens. Those from the east gate are especially good.
Bai Xiong Ji Rou (White Rooster Meat): Taste: Sour. Nature: Slightly warm. Main indications: Directs qi downward; treats manic-spirit disorders; calms the five zang organs; treats middle-jiao injury with thirst.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Ri Hua Zi: White rooster regulates the middle jiao, eliminates evil, promotes urination, and removes dan-du (erysipelas/toxic heat).
Wu Xiong Ji Rou (Black Rooster Meat): Nature: Slightly warm. Main indications: Tonifies the middle jiao, stops pain.
Dan (Gallbladder): Nature: Slightly cold. Main indications: Treats blurred vision, skin sores.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Meng Shen: Black rooster treats heart pain, eliminates evil qi in the heart and abdomen. Additionally, for weak individuals, take one chicken, process as for food, mix meat with five-flavor juice in a vessel, seal it, and boil in a double boiler until meat and bone separate, then eat. This is very tonifying. Must be eaten full on an empty stomach. Meat must be well-cooked; raw meat causes harm. Can also be marinated with five flavors, left overnight, roasted, and eaten in two meals. Also, for splinters stuck in flesh, take fourteen tail feathers, burn to ash, mix with male breast milk, apply to the wound, and the splinter will emerge. For uncontrollable tearing, apply three-year-old Guanxue to the eyeballs three times daily. Ri Hua Zi says: Warm, non-toxic. Stops abdominal pain, eliminates wind-dampness numbness, tonifies deficiency and emaciation, calms the fetus, treats fractures and carbuncles. For bamboo/wood splinters stuck inside.
Xin (Heart): Main indications: Treats five evils. Xue (Blood): Main indications: Treats fracture pain and flaccidity-paralysis.

Fang (Fat): Main indications: Treats deafness.

Gan (Liver) and Zuo Chi Mao (Left Wing Feather): Main indications: Promotes yang rising (treats impotence/yin diseases).
Guan Xue (Rooster Crown Blood): Main indications: Breast difficulties (mastitis/lactation issues).
Li Huang Pi (Inner Yellow Skin of Gizzard): Nature: Slightly cold. Main indications: Diarrhea/dysentery, promotes urination, enuresis, clears heat, stops irritability.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Ri Hua Zi: Various chickens' Li Huang Pi are neutral, non-toxic. Stops spermatorrhea and hematuria, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, intestinal wind, diarrhea/dysentery. This is the yellow skin inside the gizzard.
Shi Bai (White Chicken Manure): Nature: Slightly cold. Main indications: Thirst, shanghan, alternating chills and fever, breaks stone lin (urinary calculi) and tetany, promotes urination, stops enuresis, eliminates scars.
Hei Ci Ji (Black Hen): Main indications: Wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, five slacknesses and six urgencies, calms the fetus.
Xue (Blood): Non-toxic. Main indications: Zhong-e (acute poisoning/evil invasion) abdominal pain, fracture pain, breast difficulties.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite *Yao Xing Lun*: Hei Ci Ji (Black Hen) taste is sweet. *An Tai Tong Yong Yao* says: Wu Ci Ji (Black Hen) is warm. *Zhong E Tong Yong Yao* says: For postpartum bleeding not stopping, use three eggs, half a sheng of vinegar, two sheng of good wine, decoct to one sheng, divide into four doses. Take after walking about two or three li, slightly warmed. Also, for new postpartum women, take one chicken, process as food, stir-fry with five flavors until fragrant, add to two sheng of wine, seal overnight, drink. Makes one fat and fair. Also, mix with two sheng of black sesame, roast until fragrant, powder, add to wine. When wine is finished, it is extremely effective. Ri Hua Zi says: Wu Ci Ji is warm, non-toxic. Calms the mind and spirit, eliminates evil, treats blood evil, breaks up old blood in the heart, treats carbuncles, drains pus and generates new blood, tonifies postpartum deficiency and emaciation, benefits complexion and aids qi. Dan (Gallbladder) treats warts and ear sores, apply three times daily. Chang (Intestine) treats enuresis and polyuria. Shi (Manure) treats stroke aphasia, phlegm reversal, thirst, breaks stone lin, benefits small intestine, residual dribbling, applies to sores, eliminates scars. Powdered and taken treats pediatric Ke Wu (fright), gu poison. Yi (Wings) treats pediatric night crying, place under mattress without letting the mother know. Wo Zhong Cao (Nesting Grass) treats head sores and alopecia capitis, mix with Bai Tou Weng Cao, burn to ash, apply with lard.
He Yu (Feather): Main indications: Lower bleeding obstruction.
Huang Ci Ji (Yellow Hen): Taste: Sour, sweet. Nature: Neutral. Main indications: Middle-jiao injury with thirst, frequent/involuntary urination, intestinal diarrhea, benefits five zang organs, heals severe injuries, treats consumption and tonifies qi.

Lei Gu (Rib): Main indications: Pediatric emaciation, poor muscle growth from diet.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Meng Shen: Huang Ci Ji treats abdominal fluid retention and edema. Process one chicken as food, cook with one sheng of adzuki beans. Good. Also, those with prior bone-heat should not eat it. Eggs move wind-qi, do not eat too much. Also, Guang Fen and various stones powdered, mixed with rice to feed chickens, then eat the chickens, very tonifying. Also, vinegar-boiled eggs, eaten on an empty stomach, treat chronic red/white dysentery. Also, for human heat-toxin eruption, take three egg whites, mix with one he of honey, take, cured. Ri Hua Zi says: Huang Ci Ji stops labor-fatigue, adds marrow, tonifies essence, aids yang qi, warms small intestine, stops spermatorrhea, replenishes water qi.
Ji Zi (Egg): Main indications: Clears fire-heat sores, epilepsy/spasms. Can be made into a substance resembling amber.

Luan Bai (Egg White): Nature: Slightly cold. Treats eye heat/redness/pain, eliminates latent heat in the epigastrium, stops irritability/fullness/cough/reversal, pediatric diarrhea, difficult labor, retained placenta, severe irritability/heat from vinegar.
Luan Zhong Bai Pi (Membrane inside Eggshell): Main indications: Chronic cough with qi stagnation. Take with Mahuang (Ephedra) and Ziwan (Aster) and take, immediately cured.
Ji Bai Du Fei Zhi (Chicken White Maggot Fat): Originates from Pingze, Korea.
Tao Hongjing says: There are many entries regarding chickens. Also says: Eggs can be used as amber. If egg yolk and white are mixed and boiled together, they look very similar, except they do not attract mustard seeds. Also, boiling white with silver container mouth makes it gold-colored quickly. Chickens should not be eaten with garlic/onions or plums. Black chicken meat should not be eaten with dog liver/kidney. Children eating chicken meat easily develop roundworms. Also, chickens should not be steamed with mustard leaves. Korea is in Xuan Tu and Le Lang, so it shouldn't be that all chickens come from there. Now speaking of "Bai Du," I don't know what it is? Perhaps another species. *Tang Ben Zhu* says: Bai Ji Ju (White Chicken Spur) and Nao (Brain) treat difficult labor, burn to ash, take with wine. Brain treats pediatric convulsions. Current notes say chicken medicinal parts are best taken from Korean sources. Also citing Chen Cangqi's *Bencao*: Chicken treats horse bite wounds and scratches from skinning donkeys/horses. Use hot chicken blood and soak. Huang Ci Ji warms and tonifies yang. White chicken is cold, promotes urination, removes dan-du wind. Shi Bai from 3-year-old roosters can be possessed by spirits. Wu Ci Ji kills ghosts. Luan Bai clears heat/irritability. Shi, roasted and taken, treats insect bites. Huang Jiao Ji (Yellow-legged chicken) treats Baihu disease. Spread rice on the lesion, let the chicken eat it, or press the chicken onto it. Xiong Ji Xie Xue (Rooster flank blood) applies to vitiligo and erysipelas. Ji Zi tonifies qi, excessive eating gives voice. One egg boiled twice in turbid water, taken with water, treats postpartum dysentery. Mixed with wax as pancakes, given to children, stops dysentery. Take two eggs, break open, take half amount of strong vinegar relative to white, mix and swallow, treats postpartum blood obstruction not descending. Also, take three eggs, half sheng vinegar, two sheng wine, mix, boil to two sheng, divide into four doses, treats postpartum bleeding not stopping. Also, for Baihu disease, rub egg on lesion, curse, send to manure pile, cures within three times. Baihu is the manure god, loves eggs. Chicken manure stir-fried with black soybeans, soaked in wine, treats thief-wind, wind-bi, breaks blood.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Shu Ben Zhu: For all chicken manure etc., Wu Xiong is best. Head, Dan Xiong is best. He (Quill), Wu Xiong is best. *Yao Xing Lun* says: Ji Zi, Shi (direction), taste sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic. Treats red eye pain. Huang (Yolk), mixed commonly, treats persistent malaria. Treats lacquer dermatitis, apply. Vinegar-boiled, treats postpartum deficiency and dysentery, treats pediatric fever.
Decocted and taken, treats dysentery, clears irritability/heat. Refined, treats vomiting/reversal. Shi, breaks stone lin, promotes urination. Ri Hua Zi says: Ji Zi calms heart, calms pregnant women during epidemic febrile diseases/rushing madness, treats male scrotal dampness/itching. Opens voice/throat. Luan, vinegar-boiled, treats chronic dysentery.
Mixed with Guang Fen and roasted dry, stops pediatric gan-dysentery and female yin sores. Mixed with Dou Lin Jiu (bean-leaven wine), treats thief-wind numbness. Vinegar-soaked until spoiled, applies to blemishes. Made into wine, stops postpartum blood fainting, warms water organ, reduces urination, stops tinnitus. Mixed with wax and roasted, treats gan-dysentery, tinnitus/deafness. Huang, roasted to get oil and powder, applies to head sores. Qiao (Shell), ground and rubbed for pterygium.
*Tu Jing* says: Various chickens, *Ben Jing* says: Ji Bai Du Fei Zhi originates from Pingze, Korea. Tao Hongjing says: Korea shouldn't be the sole source, and "Bai Du" is unknown, perhaps another species. *Kai Bao* note: Says chicken medicinal parts are best from Korea. Now rarely comes from there. Many types of chickens. Dan Xiong Ji, Bai Xiong Ji, Wu Xiong, Ci Ji, head, blood, crown, intestine, liver, gallbladder, Li Huang Pi, fat, feathers, ribs, yolk/white, manure etc. all enter medicine. Used extensively in ancient and modern formulas. Though meat has slight toxicity, its ability to tonify deficiency/emaciation is most important, so food therapy formulas often use it. *Su Wen*: Fullness of heart/abdomen, cannot eat at night if eaten in morning, use Ji Shi Li (Chicken Manure Wine). One dose knows effect, two doses cures. Note says: Current materia medica says Ji Shi promotes urination, slightly cold, does not treat鼓胀 (drum-like distension). Current methods: Preparation method, should take appropriate part, steep in soup and take.
Also Zhang Zhongjing treats tetany disease, person's arms/legs straight, pulse runs up/down slightly wiry, tetany enters abdomen, Ji Shi Bai San (Chicken Manure White Powder) is main treatment. Take Ji Shi Bai as powder, measure one fang cun bi, mix with six he of water, take warm, cured. Ji Zi enters sores. Five eggs, remove hair clump size of egg, mix two ingredients, in iron pot, charcoal fire roast, initially very dry, soon chars, then liquid comes out, collect immediately, put in porcelain bowl, until liquid exhausted, apply to heat sores, then dust with Ku Shen (Sophora) powder. Recently gave birth in Wuling, within confinement period heat sores appeared on buttocks/legs, initially applied various medicines with no benefit, worsened daily, spread to half body, condition severe, cried day and night, did not nurse.
Treats pediatric fright-heat, dysentery. Note says: Commonly, old women make Ji Zi Jian (Egg Decoction) for children, mix hair and roast, wait long time for juice, give to children, removes phlegm-heat, treats hundred diseases. Use hair, all take father's combing hair. Also check Ji Zi, *Ben Jing* says: Treats fire sores, thus used, truly miraculous, immediate effect. Shell also treats shanghan relapse due to overwork, seen in *Shen Shi Fang*. Take empty eggshell, crush, roast until yellow-black, powder, mix with hot soup one he, take, lie warm, induce sweat.
*Shi Liao* says: Treats adult/pediatric fever, take three eggs, one he white honey, mix and take, immediately cured. Eggs must not be eaten with garlic, causes shortness of breath. Also, retained placenta, swallow raw one egg white, treats red eye pain, eliminates latent heat in epigastrium, irritability/fullness/cough/reversal, moves heart qi, should not eat too much. Wu Ci Ji, warm, sour, non-toxic. Eliminates wind-cold-damp bi, treats regurgitation, calms fetus, treats abdominal pain, fracture pain, lactation.
Wu You Ma (Black Sesame) one sheng, roast until fragrant, powder, mix with wine, take, feel full and able to eat. Chickens with five colors, eating causes madness. Meat mixed with fish juice causes Xin Jia (heart mass). Six fingers, black chicken white-headed domestic chicken, and chickens with claws not extending after death, eating harms people. Ji Zi and green onion, eating causes shortness of breath. Ji Zi Bai and turtle together damages people. Ji Zi and otter meat together causes Dun Shi Zhu (running corpse accumulation), medicine cannot treat. Chicken and rabbit together causes dysentery. Children under five, not weaned, do not give chicken meat. Lei Gong says: Ji Zi, if urgently needed, do not crack immediately, fear it may be twenty-one days full, formed inside, cracked empty is useless. If need to use, first test in warm water, if moves, it is formed; if not, crack, take clear part, discard yolk. Self-ruptured inside, also do not use. *Sheng Hui Fang*: Treats centipede bites, apply chicken manure. *Wai Tai Mi Yao* treats epidemic, vomiting/reversal unable to eat, food comes out immediately.
Take one egg, boil three-five boils, remove, soak in water, when outside cooked inside hot, swallow, good. *Qian Jin Fang*: Rat. Take one egg, steam over rice for half day, remove yolk, roast until black, first wipe sore juice dry, put medicine in sore hole, three times cures. Another formula: Pediatric crying. Burn Ji Shi Bai, take with rice drink. Another formula: Treat pediatric malaria. Burn Li Huang Pi inside gizzard to powder, take with milk, male rooster/female hen. *Zhou Hou Fang*: Treats heart pain. Break one egg, mix with two he head vinegar, stir evenly, warm and take at once. Another formula: Liver wind deficiency, tetany entering abdomen. Take dry powder of Shi Bai, mix with hot wine, take one qian bi. Another formula: Hanging death fixed, calm mind/spirit, slowly untie, carefully do not cut rope, hold taking one whose chest is still warm. Pierce chicken crown blood, drip into mouth, immediately alive, male hen/female rooster. Another formula: Ji Shi Bai date-sized, half cup wine, mix and灌 (pour) into mouth and nose, good.
Another formula: Rescue sudden death, or previous illness, or usually sleeping/waking, suddenly dies, all are Zhong E (evil invasion). Cut rooster crown, take blood, paint face, dry then reapply, also surround dead person with ash circle. Another formula: Sudden cough. One black chicken, process as food, soak in good wine, half day remove chicken, drink wine. One says: One dou bitter wine, boil white chicken, take three sheng, divide three doses, eat chicken without salt, good. Another formula: Treat sudden soaking sores turning to exudate, mostly start from heart, if not treated early, spreads around body killing person, apply crown blood, cures. Ge Shi Fang: Treats sudden dry retching incessantly. Break egg remove white, swallow several yolks, cures. Another formula: Centipede enters ear. Remove feathers/feet from one chick, fry in oil until yellow, thread through holes, pillow on it.
Another formula: Sudden abdominal pain, red/white dysentery, days not stopping. Take one egg, remove yolk/white, fill shell with Hu Fen (Lead White), burn to ash, take one qian bi with wine. Another formula: Treat urinary obstruction. Take one yolk, take, not more than three. Another formula: Sudden abdominal pain, calm fetus. Cut one Wu Ji Gan (Black Hen Liver), pass through five he wine, drink all. Yao says: Do not let liver touch water. Another formula: Stroke, cold spasm straight, jaw locked, unconscious. Shi Bai one sheng, roast until yellow extremely hot, mix with three sheng wine, stir remove dregs, take. Another formula: Crushed/squeezed/fallen, boat/cart wheel/mare tread/cow gore, chest/abdomen broken/sunken, limbs broken, suffocating wanting to die. Take one black chicken, chop with feathers 1200 times, mix with one sheng good bitter wine appropriately. Apply new cloth to disease, take medicine paint cloth, change when dry. Feel cold/shiver wanting to vomit, do not remove medicine immediately, shortly, reapply, one chicken little, then make again. Another formula: Horse bite sore, toxic swelling pain. Put crown blood in sore three times. Stallion use hen, mare use rooster. Another formula: Fox urine thorn prick person, swelling/pain wanting to die. Break chicken apply, cures. Another formula: Eat various vegetables poisoned, madness, stifling/vomiting/diarrhea wanting to die. Manure powder roasted research, take one fang cun bi with water.
*Jing Yan Fang*: Treats pediatric gan-dysentery, belly distension formula: Take one egg, break hole bean-sized, insert one peeled Ba Dou (Croton seed), one qian Ni Fen (Calomel), wrap in fifty-layer paper, steam on rice steamer three times, cool break, take egg meat same Ba Fen powder grind together, add little She Xiang (Musk), add flour paste pill rice-grain sized. After meal/night sleep, take two-three pills with warm water. *Jing Yan Hou Fang*: Treats postpartum woman dry mouth/tongue shrink/thirst not stopping. Beat one egg, one cup water flush, cover plate briefly take. Another formula: Treat unbearable toothache. Take Ji Shi Bai burn powder, wrap in silk, place at painful spot bite, immediately cures. Another formula: Treat various carbuncles not消散 (dissipating) already suppurated, fear needle cannot break let quick decide. Take first feather under white chicken wing, one stem each side, burn to ash research, water mix take.
Another formula: Treat wind-stroke due to sore, back/spine arching, jaw locked, limbs stiff. Ji Shi Bai one sheng, Da Dou (Soybean) five sheng, mix roast until color changes, while hot pour wine, slightly boil let bean flavor emerge, according to capacity drink, cover body sweat, carefully do not touch wind. Another formula: Treat centipede bite pain not stopping. Burn chicken manure wine mix take, good. Also take chicken manure mix vinegar apply. Sun Zhen Ren: Domestic chicken eats water chicken causes Dun Shi. Also says: If child not weaned, eating chicken generates roundworms.
Another formula: Sudden attack Wu Shi Dun Shi, condition belly distension, qi urgent rushing heart, or mass bulging up, or pulling waist/spine. Take one egg, take white swallow, tired person shake head let down. Also says: Chicken, taste pungent. Tonifies lung, treats lacquer dermatitis, Ji Zi Huang (Yolk) apply. *Shi Yi Xin Jing* treats spleen/stomach qi deficiency, intestinal slip dysentery. Use Zhi Ji San, one Huang Ci Ji, process as food, roast on charcoal, pound then brush with salt/vinegar, roast extremely, roast dry, eat on empty stomach. Also says: Treats red/white dysentery, unable to eat. One fat hen, process normally, finely grind make dough wonton, eat on empty stomach. Also says: Treats thirst, middle injury, frequent urination. One Huang Ci Ji, process normally, boil cooked, remove chicken stop cool, thirsty then drink, meat also edible, if mix rice/salt/fermented bean make porridge, and with five flavors make soup both get. Also says: Treats frequent urination, deficiency-cold. One Ji Chang (Intestine), process normally, roast make powder, warm wine mix drink.
Also says: Treats wind-cold-damp bi, five slacknesses six urgencies. One Wu Ji, process as food, boil extremely cooked mix make soup eat.
Also says: Manage manic-spirit epilepsy, not wanting sleep, self-wise self-intelligent, arrogant reckless action ceaseless, calm five zang, direct qi downward. One Bai Xiong Ji, boil cooked, five flavors harmonize make soup porridge eat. Also says: Do not eat sudden-cooked chicken meat, kills people, causes carbuncle. *Xu Shi Quan Fang*: Treats child dead in abdomen not coming out. Xiong Ji Fen (Rooster Manure) twenty-one pieces, water two sheng, decoct take five he, add rice make porridge eat, immediately out. *Sheng Jin Fang*: Treats hundred insects enter ear not out. Dian Ji Guan Xue (Rooster Crown Blood) into ear, immediately out.
