Taste: bitter, sour, salty; Nature: cold; Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: treats internal heat from pathogenic factors in the five zang organs, stops saliva and phlegm, tonifies severe injuries (extensive trauma or deficiency), treats five types of hemorrhoids, fire sores (burns or heat-toxin ulcers), breast masses (lumps in the mammary gland), and acute pain of the uterus. Harvest on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, crush to extract juice, store in a copper vessel, and simmer daily until it can be formed into pills, sized like rat feces. Insert into the anal orifice, change three times for cure. It also has the effect of aborting pregnancy. Long-term use brightens the eyes, benefits qi, prevents graying of hair, and prolongs life.
Branches: Treat washing sores, and dampness/itching under the scrotum.
Bark: Treats ulcerated sores.
Roots: Treats throat bi (swollen and painful throat with obstruction), chills and fever. Grows in the plains and marshes of Henan. Can be used to make divine candles. (Use Tongtiancao [Sedum aizoon] as an assistant herb.)
Tao Hongjing states: Huai Zi (Sophorae Semen), those connected in clusters are preferred. Harvest on the Si days of the tenth lunar month. Place in a new basin, seal with mud for one hundred days, until the skin rots into water and the kernels are the size of soybeans. Taking it fills the brain, keeps hair black, and promotes longevity. It is now found everywhere. The text mentions harvesting in the seventh month when the fruit is not yet hard, hence crushing and squeezing for juice. Tang Ben Zhu notes: *Bie Lu* records that in the eighth lunar month, cut large branches of the locust tree to encourage tender shoots; boil the juice to brew wine, which effectively treats wind-dampness with flaccidity. Huai Er (Fungus on Sophora Tree), taste: bitter, pungent; nature: neutral; toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: five types of hemorrhoids, heart pain, painful sores in the female vagina. It is a fungus on the locust tree; select those firm like mulberry fungus. Branches, after processing and warming, stop scorpion venom. Chen Yuxi et al. verify *Erya*: [Name], locust leaves are large and dark. Shou Gong Huai (Palmeria locust), leaves close by day and open by night. Explanation: [Name] is a type of locust. According to *Erya*, there are several types of Huai: large dark leaves are called [Name]; leaves closing by day/opening by night are Shou Gong Huai; fine green leaves are simply called Huai; their functions are not distinguished. Flowers bloom in April/May, fruit sets in June/July. Harvest tender fruits on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, crush for juice/decoction. Harvest mature fruits in the tenth lunar month. Bark/roots can be harvested anytime. Doctors currently use Huai most frequently. Spring: harvest tender branches, burn to black ash for teeth cleaning.
