Under the entry for Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Tao Hongjing notes: Yuanzhi fears Qi Ge (Clam). Su Gong states: The lower volume of "Yao Lu" (Record of Medicinals) mentions Ge (Clam), but does not describe its efficacy and characteristics. The annotation further states: Wax fears Qi Ge. According to observation: Qi Ge resembles Clam, pointed at both ends, small, living in seawater. It has no other medicinal functions; fishermen eat it.
Under the entry for Zhantang (Styrax), Tao Hongjing notes: Counterfeit Zhantang is made from the feces of Zhe Chong (Coccus laccae). Observation: This refers to the current Zhe wood insect, which eats wood inside trees and excretes feces. Its feces promotes blood circulation and breaks stasis, but is not fragrant. Zhantang is fragrant when burned. Since they are not similar, they cannot be classified as the same category.

Under the entry for Zhi Zhu (Spider), Tao Hongjing notes: Those hanging nets like fish are also named [Missing Character]. Observation: [Missing Character] resides in holes and dense vegetation, weaving net curtains, opening one door for entry and exit. Small in size, resembling spiders but with smaller spots. Mainly treats Ding Zhong (carbuncle) by extracting the root, made into ointment for application. Tao Hongjing says this is the true spider, not referring to common spiders. This group of creatures is not monolithic.
Under the entry for Kui (Mallow), quoting Su Gong: The Rong people value Xun Qu (Oxpecker/Beetle?), just as the Ba people value Fu Ruan (Water Scorpion). Observation: Fei Lian is also named Fu Pan, eaten by people in Shu, spicy in taste, already cited in "Ben Jing" (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica). The "Zuo Zhuan" states: Fei does not bring disaster. Du Yu's commentary states: Fei is Fu Ruan. Resembling locusts, active at night. Also named Fu Pan, i.e., Pan Chong (Plate Insect). Names and insects are similar, but ultimately not the same creature. ([Missing Character] pronounced Fan, a type of Katydids.)
