The flavor is sweet, the nature is neutral and warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats damage to the middle jiao (middle energizer), exhaustion due to overwork, lower back pain, emaciation, tonifies the middle qi, benefits qi and blood, treats amenorrhea and infertility in women, alleviates pain, calms the fetus, treats hematemesis (vomiting blood) and hematochezia (blood in stool), metrorrhagia and metrostaxis (uterine bleeding), soreness and pain in the four limbs, excessive sweating with dripping sweat, as well as fractures and traumatic injuries. Long-term consumption can lighten the body and prolong life.
Also known as Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue). Produced in Yunzhong. Made by boiling deer antlers. (Effective when heated, adverse reaction with Da Huang, Rhizoma Rhei Preparata.)
Tao Hongjing stated: Nowadays, few people boil and use it; it is only used for making horn bows, which refers to using this glue. As a medicinal ingredient, its use is also rare, but Daoists often require it.
Method for preparing Bai Jiao (White Glue): First, soak in rice washing water for seven days until soft, then boil and decoct, similar to the method for making E Jiao (Donkey-Hide Glue). Another method: finely chop the antlers and boil them together with a piece of dried cowhide; the antlers will dissolve and rot. Otherwise, they repel each other for a hundred years and will never cook properly. The Commentary on the Tang Materia Medica states: Cervi Cornu (Deer Antler) and Elaphanti Cornu (Elk Antler), if boiled into thick juice and re-decocted, become glue; why must they be rotted? Rotting them is not difficult; this statement is likely erroneous due to ignorance of the glue-making process. Minister Yuxi et al. carefully noted according to *Xing Yao Lun* (Treatise on Medicinal Properties): Bai Jiao, also known as Huang Ming Jiao (Yellow Bright Glue), can treat kidney qi deficiency in men, and qi deficiency leading to consumptive disease. Women taking it can conceive, it calms the fetus, dispels cold, treats leukorrhea (red and white discharge), and primarily treats hematemesis.
*Tu Jing Ben Cao* (Illustrated Classic of Materia Medica) has detailed records under the entry for E Jiao.
For dietary therapy: Apply around the periphery of the swelling, leaving a hole in the center, so that the swelling opens and drains spontaneously. To treat persistent cough: Roast Huang Ming Jiao until half-charred, grind into powder. Take one qian bi (approx. 3-5g) each time, mixed with two qian bi of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) powder. Use one cup and eight fen of Hou Chi Tang (Thin Fermented Soybean Decoction), add a little Cong Bai (Scallion White), boil in a ding pot for one or two boils, pour into a cup, and sip three to five mouthfuls when coughing occurs. Afterwards, keep warm according to the previous method, and take again when coughing recurs. Additionally, to stop hematemesis and hemoptysis (coughing up blood): Use one liang of Huang Ming Jiao, cut into small slices, roast until yellow; one liang of Xin Mian (New Cotton Wool), burn to ash and grind finely. Take one qian bi each time, taken down with Xin Mi Yin (New Rice Drink), suitable regardless of age or duration of illness, taken after meals and before lying down. *Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) treats consumptive disease with spermatorrhea. Dry glue three liang, roasted, ground into powder. Mix with two sheng of wine, take warm. Another prescription: Treats all swellings, whether ulcerated or not. Take a piece of glue, soak in water until soft and pliable. According to the size of the swelling, apply it to the head of the swelling and make a hole. If already ulcerated but closed, the pus will be adhered to the glue; quickly lift it, and all pus will drain out. If there is no pus, the swelling will subside spontaneously. Another prescription: Treats hematuria. Three liang of glue, roasted, boiled in two sheng of water to obtain one sheng and four he. Divide into two doses. Another prescription: Tonifies deficiency and exhaustion, benefits marrow, promotes muscle growth, beautifies complexion, makes one fat and strong. Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), roasted, ground into powder. Take one fang cun bi (approx. 5-10g) with wine, three times a day. *Qian Jin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold): Treats foreign bodies in the ear that cannot be removed. Cut hemp rope so the end is frayed, apply good glue, place it on the foreign body in the ear, stick it firmly, and slowly pull it out. *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies): Sudden vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Boil two liang of glue in wine until dissolved, take in one dose. *Dou Men Fang*: Treats lung rupture with bleeding, sudden continuous hemoptysis. Use a large piece of Hai Xi Gao (Sea Rhino Glue), roast over fire until scorched yellow, then apply Su You (Butter/Oil). Roast and apply again until transparent enough to be ground into powder. Dissolve three da qian bi (approx. 9-15g) in hot water, let cool, and take orally; bleeding stops immediately. This is Shui Jiao (Water Glue), highly effective. Another prescription: Treats scalds and burns. Boil glue in water to the right consistency, let cool, and apply to the wound. Tan Shi Xiao Er Fang (Tan's Pediatric Formulas): Treats facial sores in children. Dou Zi Ban Fa (Bean Spot Scar Method): Roast Huang Ming Jiao slowly over low heat into powder, take one qian bi mixed with warm wine. For those who have had smallpox, it prevents scars; for those who have not, it induces purgation. Also treats pediatric burn scars: sweep with a chicken feather dipped in Huang Ming Jiao.
