Radish Root (Lai Fu Gen)
Pungent, sweet, warm in nature, non-toxic. Taken dispersed or prepared by frying/boiling and eaten, it strongly directs Qi downward, aids digestion of grains, eliminates phlegm accumulation (Tan Pi), and promotes robustness and health.
Freshly crushed juice taken orally primarily treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome), with trials showing significant efficacy.
The *Tang Ben Cao* commentary states: Tao Hongjing referred to "Wen Song" as this. Its tender leaves are eaten as raw vegetables. The large leaves, when cooked and consumed, aid digestion and harmonize the middle Jiao. The root's efficacy surpasses that of Turnip (Wu Jing).
Currently,
Commentary: Commonly known as Luobo. (Originally attached in *Tang Ben Cao*). Ministers Yu Xi et al. respectfully note according to the *Shu Ben Tu Jing*: Named Lubo, grows north of the Yangtze River, most abundant in Qin and Jin regions. The *Erya* states: "Jin, Lufu," explained as: Purple-flowered Brassica rapa var. parachinensis (Zi Hua Song). Commonly called Wen Song, resembling Wu Jing, with a large root. Also named "Bao," commonly called "Bao," also named "Lufu."
It is further stated: Radish root aids digestion, benefits joints, regulates complexion, refines the five Zang organs by removing pathogenic qi, and counteracts dough toxicity. Whenever one overeats, chewing and swallowing it raw facilitates digestion. Ground into a paste for making noodles/buns is superior; even after eating until full, one does not feel feverish. It also treats lung cough with hemoptysis. Fried with ghee (Su), it directs Qi downward. Meng Shen says: Radish is cold in nature. It benefits the five Zang organs and lightens the body. The root, when consumed, makes the skin white and fine. Ri Huazi says: Radish is neutral in nature; it can resolve phlegm and stop coughing, treating Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy) and hemoptysis. It warms the middle, supplements deficiencies, treats consumptive thinness and coughing; boiled with mutton and crucian carp. The seeds, ground with water and taken, induce vomiting of wind-phlegm. Ground with vinegar, they reduce swelling and detoxify. Should not be consumed with Rehmannia (Di Huang).
Details from the *Tu Jing* are under the Wu Jing entry.
Sun Simiao: Long-term consumption obstructs Ying and Wei, causing premature graying of hair. *Shi Yi Xin Jing*: Treats Xiao Ke with dry mouth. One sheng of radish juice, drunk, brings relief.
Another prescription: Treats chronic upper Qi cough with excessive phlegm, wheezing, and expectoration of pus and blood. Take one he of radish seeds, grind and decoct in water, take after meals. Another prescription: Directs Qi downward, aids digestion, eliminates phlegm accumulation, promotes robustness; make into soup and eat. Freshly crushed juice taken orally regulates Xiao Ke. *Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang* treatment: Xiao Ke Du Sheng San (Single-Excellence Powder for Wasting-Thirst): Extract seeds from three radishes, wash clean, slice thinly, dry and powder. Take two qian each time, mix with clarified pork broth, take after meals and before sleep, three times daily. *Sheng Jin Fang*: Treats Wind-Phlegm. Make radish seeds into powder, mix with warm water for one spoonful, wait a long time then vomit saliva/phlegm. If it is loose/flaccid wind syndrome, after vomiting with this method, take tight/detoxifying herbs, then treat lung disease cough. Take half sheng of seeds, wash, dry, stir-fry in a pot until yellow and ripe, powder. Mix with rock sugar, form pills like marbles, wrap in silk and suck. *Dong Wei Zhi* states radish resolves dough toxicity. Yang Wengong Tan Yan: Residents east of the river cultivate annually; first year taro, next year 30 mu of radishes, yielding profit equivalent to 30 hu of rice. This shows radish aids digestion. *Erya*: Belongs to Wu Jing category, purple flower, large root, commonly called Bao. During the Gengshi rebellion, hundreds of palace maids were confined within temple gates, digging up Lufu roots in the courtyard to eat. This is the modern radish. For migraine, use one conch shell of fresh radish juice, lie supine and instill into nose; left pain into left nostril, right pain into right, both pains into both, divine efficacy.
*Yan Yi* states: Lai Fu Gen is the Lufu mentioned earlier; people now only call it Luobo. Abundant in Hebei, good in Deng and Lai. Consume caution with Di Huang and He Shou Wu.
