尾之说,盖今人多不识。
Chai Pi (Jackal Skin): Hot in nature. Primarily treats cold bi syndrome (painful obstruction due to cold), Hongxiangjiao (gouty arthritis with cold and numbness in the feet). When cooked and wrapped around the affected area, it heals immediately. (Attached from *Tang Bencao*)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Meng Shen: Treats gan li (childhood malnutrition with diarrhea), various sores in the abdomen; boil for juice to drink, or burn to ash and take with wine. The ash applied externally treats dental sores.
Meat: Sour in taste, inedible; consumes human fat and muscle, damages mental spirit. Ri Hua Zi states: Toxic. Roasted and used to wrap soft feet, or consumed as bone powder, it causes emaciation.
*Shiliao Bencao* states: Cold in nature. Head bones burned to ash, mixed with wine and administered to oxen or horses at the trough, makes them docile and affectionate. *Shenghui Fang*: Treats ye disease (dysphagia/esophageal stricture). Use wild wolf laryngeal prominence, sun-dried and pounded to powder; add half a qian to rice and eat; excellent effect. *Waitai Miyao* states: Treats luoli (scrofula); apply ash of wild wolf feces externally. *Zimu Milu*: For infant night crying, administer an amount the size of a millet seed to calm it. *Baopuzi* states: Wild wolves live up to 800 years; after 300 years, they can transform into human form.
Tan'na Qi (Eunuch Seal Penis/Bladder): Salty in taste, non-toxic. Primarily treats gui qi shizhu (ghostly qi and corpse transmission, infectious wasting diseases), dreaming of sexual intercourse with ghosts, ghostly possession, fox-spirit possession, heart and abdominal pain, zhong'e evil qi (sudden attack by evil pathogens), accumulation of old blood masses, pi accumulations, and emaciation. Gu'na beast resembles a fox but is larger with a long tail. Produced in Xirong. (Currently attached)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite *Yaoxing Lun*: Tan'na Qi is a sovereign herb, very hot. It is the external kidney of the sea dog from Silla. Taken connectedly. Treats emaciation, depletion of kidney essence, kidney labor caused by excessive sexual activity, and thinness/withered appearance. Ri Hua Zi states: Tan'na beast is hot. Tonifies the middle and boosts qi, warms the kidneys and waist/knees, assists yang qi, breaks stagnation masses, treats惊狂痫疾 (mania, convulsions, epilepsy) and heart/abdominal pain, breaks old blood stasis.
*Tujing* states: Tan'na Qi originates from Xirong; now also found near the East Sea, said to be the sea dog kidney of Silla. Old texts describe it as the Gu'na beast, resembling a fox but larger with a long tail, having yellowish meat-colored hair on its skin, with three hairs sharing one follicle. The illustration from Cangzhou depicts a fish-like creature with a pig's head and two legs. Its umbilicus is red-purple with purple spots, completely unlike the true specimen. Physicians also use this substitute; to verify authenticity, place it near a sleeping dog; if the dog jumps up startled as if mad, it is genuine. It preserves well; keep in a sealed container to maintain moisture like new. No specific season for collection. *Yiyu Tu* states: To test Tan'na Qi, place it in water in a bowl in a windy spot in the twelfth lunar month; if it does not freeze, it is genuine.
Chen Zangqi states: Resembles rotten bone, comes from Xifan. Gu'na beast resembles a fox but is larger with a long tail. Umbilicus resembles musk, yellow-red color. Produced in Turkic lands.
Hu Medicine: Respectfully citing *Lin Hai Zhi*: Produced in the East Sea waters. Shape resembles a deer, head like a dog, long tail. At sunrise, it floats on the water surface. Kunlun people hunt it with bows and arrows, taking its external kidneys, drying them in shade for 100 days. Taste is sweet, fragrant, very warm, without side effects. Best for treating lung labor with oppression, dark complexion, and cold essence.
When incorporating into formulas, first decoct in silver vessels with wine, then mix with other herbs. Alternatively, soak in good wine and roast before use. Leigong states: Must identify carefully; many fakes exist. There is a sea beast called Shuiniao Long; fishermen kill it and sell its kidneys for medicinal use, which may cause errors as the substance differs. A pair has two layers of thin skin wrapping a spherical fleshy core, with yellowish meat-colored hair on the skin, three hairs per follicle. Kept moist annually, always looks new. Place near a sleeping dog gently at its head; if the dog startles violently, it is genuine. If using, soak in wine for one day, wrap in paper, roast gently over fire until fragrant, finely chop, and pound alone.
*Yanyi* states: Tan'na Qi is currently produced in Dengzhou and Laizhou. *Yaoxing Lun* considers it the external kidney of the sea dog. Ri Hua Zi calls it a beast. Observing its current shape, it is neither dog nor beast nor fish. The front resembles a beast, the tail resembles a fish. Body has short, dense, pale blue-white hair; belly and flanks are entirely white, interspersed with pale blue. White hairs have deep blue-black spots; over time, color fades. Skin is thick and tough, like cowhide. Border generals often use it to decorate saddles. Its umbilicus is effective for treating cold accumulation in the umbilical/abdominal region, essence depletion, and extreme spleen/kidney labor, without need for further testing. The description of resembling a fox with a long tail is likely unknown to modern people.
