Quque (Sparrow Egg)
Taste: Sour. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Directs Qi downward; treats impotence in men (failure of erection), stimulates erection and heat, increases semen, and aids fertility.
Brain
Indications: Treats deafness.
Chen Yuxi et al. note regarding general medicines for deafness: Sparrow brain is neutral in nature.
Head Blood
Indications: Treats nyctalopia (night blindness).
Male Sparrow Droppings
Chen Yuxi et al. note regarding general medicines for toothache: Male sparrow droppings are warm in nature. They treat eye pain, resolve abscesses and boils, treat leukorrhea in women, dysuria, and eliminate hernia masses. Collected in the fifth lunar month, they are most effective.
Tao Hongjing states: The nature of sparrows favors the harmony of Yin and Yang, thus their eggs are similar. The *Shu* text states: Taking sparrow eggs combined with Tianxiong Wan causes the penis to enlarge and prevents decline. Humans suffering from inability to see at dusk are said to have nyctalopia.
Use the head blood to treat it. Male sparrow droppings are those pointed at both ends. They also treat dental caries. Sparrow meat should not be eaten with plums, nor is it advisable to eat it with sauce; pregnant women are especially prohibited from consuming it. Tang Ben Zhu notes: *Bie Lu* states that mixing sparrow droppings with male infant's colostrum into a thin paste and applying it internally treats chronic cold diseases caused by phlegm-fluid retention or mass formation. Alternatively, taking it with a small amount of dried ginger makes one robust and joyful. According to Chen Cangqi's *Bencao*: Sparrow meat boosts sexual function, and eating it enables procreation. Winter sparrow meat is best. Sparrow droppings collected in the twelfth lunar month are commonly called Qingdan. They treat various mass formations and Fuliang disease. Combined with dried ginger, Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), and Aiye (Mugwort Leaf) to make pills, they can dissolve masses upon entering the stomach. For painful abscesses that fail to suppurate, applying one pill externally resolves them immediately. For acute jaundice approaching death, grind two pills finely and take with warm water.
Chen Yuxi et al. note according to Meng Shen: Consume the meat after the tenth lunar month and before the first lunar month. It replenishes Qi deficiency in the five Zang organs, assists the Dao of Yin, benefits essence and marrow, does not tonify Qi, warms the waist and knees, reduces urination, treats metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea. Among droppings, those pointed at the head and rod-shaped are from males; those covering the right side are also from males.
Tu Jing states: Sparrows were not originally recorded as originating from specific provinces, but are now found everywhere. Their meat is greatly warming; consumption benefits Yang, and winter specimens are best. Eggs, brains, and heads are collected in the twelfth lunar month. Commonly called Qingdan, those pointed at the head are from males. *Suwen* states: Those with fullness and distension in the chest and hypochondrium, impaired smell, discharge of clear fluid, initial hemoptysis, cyanosis of the four limbs, vertigo, and frequent bleeding from the anterior and posterior orifices suffer from Xueku (Blood Depletion). This condition arises from massive blood loss in youth. If coitus occurs while intoxicated, the middle Qi is exhausted and the Liver is injured, leading to scanty or absent menstruation. Treatment involves Heigu (Cuttlefish Bone) and Qugu (Smilax Glabra Rhizome), combined and formed into pills using sparrow eggs, sized like small beans. Take five pills as a post-meal medicine, drinking Baojiu juice to benefit the intestines and heal liver injury. "Post-meal medicine first" refers to taking medicine after food. Ancient materia medica texts state that Heigu and Qugu do not directly treat Xueku; however, the classic methods use them to attack the root cause. Modern practitioners also use sparrow meat, processed with Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) paste, combined with other herbs into pills for lower Jiao tonification, known as Yima Wan. This method originated in the Tang Dynasty, reportedly used by Emperor Minghuang. Below is the entry for Swallow Droppings. Tao Hongjing states there are Hu and Yue varieties. For medicinal use, Hu swallows are employed. Hu Qia uses them in Qingyangzhi Wan to treat Zhu diseases. Their nests are also used medicinally. Cui Yuanliang's *Haishang Fang* treats damp bi by selecting the widest Hu swallow nest, using only the part where eggs are incubated; applying the remainder twice cures the condition. For malignant thorns, mix nest powder with vinegar into a paste, apply, change every three to two days, and it heals.
Dietary Therapy
Egg white, mixed with Tianxiong powder and Tusizi (Cuscuta Seed) powder into pills, taken with five pills on an empty stomach with wine. Treats male impotence, female leukorrhea, dysuria, hernia masses, abscesses, and replenishes Qi of the five Zang organs. Leigong states: Regarding Quesu, do not use ordinary sparrow droppings. Droppings from sparrows with yellow mouths that have not engaged in mating are considered Quesu. If the base is pointed upwards, it is from a female; if round at both ends, it is from a male. Females use male droppings, males use female droppings. When harvesting, remove any attached Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) and do not use them. Then grind in a mortar until powdery, soak overnight in decocted Gancao (Licorice Root) soup, discard the clear liquid, dry by roasting, and use as needed. *Waitai Miyao* treats dental caries with worms: Take male sparrow droppings, wrap in cotton, insert into the tooth cavity, changing once or twice daily. Another formula: Treats throat obstruction and trismus. Apply milk mixture frequently. Male sparrow droppings are preferred; hard ones are from males. *Jianyao Jizhong* "Fuchren Chuinai Dusheng San": Baodingxiang (White Peony Root? Note: Context implies Bird Dropping, likely White Sparrow Dropping) half liang, pounded and sifted into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mixed with warm wine, anytime. *Guangli Fang*: Pregnant women eating sparrow meat and drinking alcohol may produce sons with licentious hearts. Also states: Pregnant women eating sparrow meat and bean sauce may produce sons with many facial spots. *Zimu Milu*: Treats pediatric stroke with trismus and lack of milk secretion. Mix sparrow droppings with plain water, form pills the size of sesame seeds, take two pills, and cure. Another formula: Treats pediatric frostbite. Apply sparrow brain marrow, and it heals immediately.
Yanyi States: Regarding sparrow eggs, Meng Shen says: Eat the meat after the tenth lunar month and before the first lunar month. This likely takes advantage of the meaning of Yin-Yang stability and non-discharge. Eggs should also be from the first clutch.
