[Gui Du You]
Taste: Acrid, Bitter. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. Indications: Gui Zhu (a contagious, chronic wasting disease with shifting symptoms), sudden attack by evil qi causing Zhong E (sudden collapse or coma), pathogenic qi accumulation in the heart and abdomen, various toxins from spirits/essences, Warm Malaria, and epidemic diseases. It strengthens the waist and legs and increases physical strength. Also known as Du Yao Cao (Solitary Swaying Grass).
*Bencao Tang Xin* notes: The plant has a single stem; leaves grow at the top of the stem like an umbrella (pronounced 'san'); the root resembles *Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix* (Niu Xi) but is thinner and black. It is found everywhere. It must grow in clusters. Currently, people substitute it with *Cynanchum Atratum* (Xu Chang Qing), which is incorrect. (Attached prior to *Bencao Tang*). Minister Yuxi et al. carefully examined the Shu edition: *Cynanchum Atratum*, *Saposhnikoviae Radix* (Chi Jian), etc. There is also one called Gui Du You, but its therapeutic indications differ; careful distinction is required when using it. Furthermore, *Tujing* states: The stem resembles a thin arrow shaft, less than two chi high. Leaves grow at the top of the stem in an umbrella shape. Presumably because the root grows horizontally without fibrous roots, flowers grow in the center of the leaves, yellowish-white. Roots are harvested in February and August; available everywhere.
Leigong says: Upon collection, cut into fine pieces, pound, boil in water with raw *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Sheng Gan Cao) for one shichen (approx. 2 hours), strain, and use.
[Bitter, Cold Herb - Name omitted in source text segment]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Non-toxic. Indications: Resolves poisoning from various medicines, vegetables, and meats. Taken after soaking in wine, it treats deficiency-type labor with wind-heat. Grows in Lingnan, Jiaozhou, and Guangzhou's plains and marshes.
*Bencao Tang Xin* notes: The seedling resembles *Kadsura Longipedunculata* (Ye Ge) but bears white flowers. The root bark is thick, the flesh is white, and its core is softer than that of Ye Ge. (Attached prior to *Bencao Tang*). Minister Yuxi et al. carefully examined the Shu edition and *Tujing*: Leaves have fine hairs, vine-like growth, white flowers. Root resembles *Paeoniae Radix Rubra* (Mu Dan Pi) in shape, soft core, white and thick bark. Taste bitter; only the root is used, not the seedling; does not wither in winter.
Leigong says: When using, do not use *Vitis flexuosa* (Cai Hua Teng), because the true Bai Hua Teng resembles it, differing only in taste. Cai Hua Teng tastes sour and astringent and is unsuitable for use. Regarding Bai Hua Teng, there are five types; the remainder of *Bencao Tang*...
