Mianli Fish (Mianli Yu)
The flavor is sweet, and it is toxic. It primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids (Wuzhi), sores, and kills various parasites.
Tao Hongjing stated: It can climb trees to eat vine flowers, resembling an eel in shape, and people catch it for food. When roasted and used to fumigate wood and bamboo, it repels woodworms. Its grease can be used to treat various sores.
There is also a loach (Qiu), which is similar but shorter. The annotation in *Tang Bencao* states: This fish's grease can also treat pain caused by insects in the ear. The Ni fish has four feet and can climb trees. Tao's description of Mianli is therefore erroneous evidence. Ministers Yu Xi et al., according to Meng Shen, state: It kills various insect poisons; when dried, powdered, and taken on an empty stomach, three to five doses result in recovery. Additionally, fumigating the lower orifices with its smoke kills all hemorrhoidal worms. For those suffering from various sores and wind-rash itching, long-term consumption is very effective. For bi-syndrome (painful obstruction syndrome) in the waist and kidneys caused by damp-wind, feeling as if washed with water, one can take Wuwei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit) and rice to boil and eat on an empty stomach, providing great tonification. It is also beneficial for those suffering from damp Hongjiaojiao (Hongjiaojiao, often referring to tinea pedis or foot ulcers). Furthermore, consuming it neutralizes the toxicity of various herbs and minerals, preventing harm. The five-colored variety has the most potent efficacy. It also treats various leukorrhea diseases in women and all wind pathogens. The five-colored Mianli originates from Shenzhou. Its head resembles a pit viper, and the one with five-colored patterns on its back is the correct specimen. Chen Shiliang stated: Mianli fish is cold in nature. Chen Cangqi stated: The Qiu fish is short and small, often living in mud. It treats wasting-thirst in dogs and cattle; taking one or two pieces, pouring them into a bamboo tube, and administering via the mouth and nose causes immediate fattening. Rihua Zi stated: Sea Mian is neutral in nature and toxic. It treats skin malignant sores, scabies, infantile malnutrition (Ganji), and hemorrhoids. It is also known as Ci Mian and [missing character] Gouyu. He further stated: Mian fish is neutral in nature and slightly toxic. It treats consumptive disease (Laobing), supplements deficiencies, kills Chuanzhu Qi (transmissible wasting disease such as tuberculosis), kills insects and toxins, treats malignant sores, warms the waist and knees, promotes yang function, and treats pruritus caused by worms in the female postpartum genital tract.
*Tujing* states: *Benjing* does not record the origin of Mianli fish, but it is found everywhere today. It resembles an eel but has a larger abdomen, appearing greenish-yellow. It is said to be a type of dragon or clam, good at attacking riverbanks, causing them to collapse, so residents near rivers greatly fear it. Although this fish is toxic, it can tonify deficiency and damage of the five zang organs. Those with chronic illness and emaciation can consume it cooked with rice and harmonized flavors. Those suffering from various sores, hemorrhoids, fistulas, and wind pathogens benefit from long-term consumption. A variety from Shenzhou has five-colored patterns on its back and is the most potent. Those from the sea are called Hai Mian, similar but larger, with the same efficacy. People by the sea also call it Ci Mian and [missing character] Gouyu.
*Shiliao* states: It kills insect toxins; dry-roast until fragrant. Consuming it leads to recovery in three to five instances. Long-term use is especially good. Additionally, it suppresses the toxicity of various herbs and minerals without damaging the human body. The five-colored variety has the most potent efficacy. It also treats various leukorrhea diseases in women and all wind-induced itching sensations like insects crawling. Five-colored specimens are rare in rivers and seas, originating from streams, marshes, and pools in Shenzhou; their heads resemble pit vipers, and they have five-colored patterns on their backs. Additionally, burning it to fumigate felt stops woodworms. Placing its bones in chests or clothes prevents silverfish and other insects from biting fabrics. Burning it to fumigate houses prevents woodworms in bamboo and wood. *Shenghui Fang*: Treats heart pain caused by various insects, frequent vomiting, limb disharmony, ascending cold qi, and abdominal fullness/stuffiness. Use Mianli fish, lightly roasted until cooked, and have the patient eat it three to five times. Another prescription: Two jin of Mianli fish, processed for eating, cut into segments, placed in a pan, boiled with two cups of wine, and eaten with salt and vinegar. *Waitai Miyao*: Bixiao Formula, treats heart pain. Take Mianli fish, lightly roasted until cooked, and feed to the patient. One or two pieces lead to permanent recovery; eating until full is better. Jingyan Fang: Treats malignant sores. Grind snake fish bones into powder, mix with various plasters, apply to the affected area, and cover with paper patches. *Shiyi Xinjing*: Primarily treats five types of hemorrhoidal sores. Insect-killing formula: One Mianli fish, processed for eating, sliced, roasted, and eaten with pepper, salt, and soy sauce. *Jiyan Fang*: Treats Baibo disease (vitiligo) on the neck and face, spreading gradually, resembling tinea but without open sores, which can be treated. Apply Mianli fish grease. First wipe and scrape the surface until dry and painful, then apply the fish grease. Healing occurs after one application; severe cases do not exceed three applications. *Jishen Lu*: Someone suffered from consumptive disease, infecting several others who died. The sick person was nailed in a coffin, discarded in water to permanently stop transmission, and floated down the river. Someone in Jinshan found it strange, pulled it ashore to inspect, and saw a living woman. They took her to a fishing hut, fed her much Mianli fish, and her illness healed. She subsequently became the wife of the fisherman.
*Yanyi* states: Mianli fish, freshly slaughtered and sun-dried, take a small amount, lightly roast over fire until oil exudes, apply to Baibofeng (white patch wind/vitiligo), and rub with fingers. The color changes immediately. Using this method five to seven times results in cure, starting with slight rubbing on the white patches.
