(Right hand, one fen anterior to the Guan position is the Qikou [Qi Gate])
The Qikou pulse is used to examine Yin interior organs (The Qikou pulse diagnoses internal injuries caused by the Seven Emotions and dietary damage; it belongs to the Interior, Zang organs, and Yin). A Ru [Soft] pulse indicates injury from anger, a Se [Choppy] pulse from sorrow, and a San [Scattered] pulse from joy (For instance, if the Qikou pulse is Ru, it is due to injury from anger; other cases follow this pattern). Fear causes Jie [Knotted] pulses, excessive contemplation causes Jie [Tied/Knotted] pulses, fright causes Duo [Active/Fluctuating] pulses, and grief causes Jin [Tight] pulses; one must deduce which organ is affected (When diagnosing Ru, Se, etc., at the Qikou, observe which other position correlates; thus knowing which Zang organ is diseased. For example, a Ru pulse at Qikou belongs to the Liver, provided the Liver pulse itself is Xian [Wiry] and Ying [Hard]. This section first discusses diseases of the Qikou related to internal injury from the Seven Emotions).
Dietary injury and retention are due to the Spleen; methods to unblock the intestines and invigorate the stomach correspond accordingly. If both the Renying [Human Welcome] and Qikou pulses are Chen [Deep] and Jin [Tight], it is a Shanghan [Cold Damage] disease with retained food, increasing day by day (This section discusses diseases of the Qikou related to internal injury from diet, and diseases where both Renying and Qikou are injured).
(With the left hand as primary, the pulse slanting from the Cun [Inch] position outward is [Yang Wei]. With the right hand viewed inversely, it slants inward from the Cun position.)
The Yang Wei Mai [Yang Linking Vessel] converges with all Yang meridians (The Yang Wei vessel slants from Shaoyin [Lesser Yin] to Taiyang [Greater Yang], originating at Jinmen [GB37] of Foot-Taiyang, and converges with five vessels—Hand and Foot Shaoyang [Lesser Yang] and Yangming [Bright Yang]—at Yangbai [GB14]; thus, what it converges with are all Yang), its root lies in Yin but its manifestation is on the exterior (The Yang Wei governs the exterior of the whole body). Fengfu [GV16] and Fengchi [GB20] should be needled together; this is the method established by Changsha [Zhang Zhongjing]: first needle these two acupoints, then administer Guizhi Tang [Cinnamon Twig Decoction] (Fengchi and Fengfu are intersection points of the Yang Wei vessel. Zhang Zhongjing's method: first needle these two acupoints, then give Guizhi Tang).
(With the left hand as primary, the pulse slanting from the Cun position inward is [Yin Wei]. With the right hand viewed inversely, it slants outward.)
The Yin Wei Mai [Yin Linking Vessel] governs the interior and converges with all Yin meridians (The Yin Wei governs the interior of the whole body; its vessel slants from Shaoyang [Lesser Yang] to Jueyin [Terminal Yin], originating at Zubin [KI9] of Foot-Shaoyin, ending at the front of the vertex; thus, where it originates and reaches are all Yin), yet it arises from Yang with a deep root (Yang has its root in Yin, Yin has its root in Yang; therefore, these two vessels are the generals of Ying [Nutritive] and Wei [Defensive]). When Heart Pain [Xintong] occurs, carefully consult Jiegu's [Li Dongyuan/Jin Yuan doctor] methods; Lizhong Tang [Regulate the Middle Decoction] and Sini Tang [Frigid Extremities Decoction] offer methods worth seeking (Jiegu stated: "If the Yin Wei vessel is diseased causing Heart Pain, treatment focuses on Sanyinjiao [SP6] of Foot-Shaoyang and the Three Yin meridians, as that is where the Yin Wei originates." Furthermore, referencing Zhang Zhongjing's methods: for Taiyin syndrome use Lizhong Tang, for Shaoyin syndrome use Sini Tang, for Jueyin syndrome use Danggui Sini Tang [Angelica Frigid Extremities Decoction]; select formulas to treat Yin Wei diseases. This aligns with Jiegu's treatment of Sanyinjiao).
