The so-called "Eight Pi" (Pi Syndromes) arises from disharmony between Ying and Wei (Defensive Qi), separation of Yin and Yang, external invasion of Wind pathogenic factors, and their struggle with Wei Qi. This results in stagnation and obstruction of Blood and Qi, leading to the formation of Pi. "Pi" means obstruction, referring to the blockage and failure of the Fu organs to circulate freely. It is caused by emotional distress and resentment leading to Qi accumulation, or internal injury due to falls. The symptoms include abdominal distension due to Qi knotting, accompanied by frequent high fever. Since there are eight types, it is called Eight Pi. However, medical texts do not clearly specify its manifestations. Fan Wang's compilation of Hua Tuo's "Taiyi Jueyi Double Pill Formula" claims to treat Eight Pi, Five Hernias, Accumulations, latent heat, retained fluids, and alternating chills and fever, yet it does not explain the specific name "Eight Pi."
Various Pi syndromes arise from disharmony between Ying and Wei, separation of Yin and Yang, and blockage of the Fu organs preventing free circulation, hence termed Pi. Texts mention Eight Pi, Five Pi, or Six Pi because their names and presentations vary; thus, they are collectively referred to as Various Pis. Their clinical manifestations involve abdominal Qi knotting and distension, obstruction, and occasional high fever, similar in nature to the aforementioned Eight Pi, hence the term Various Pis. Treatments involving decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and moxibustion have separate specific formulas. Tonification, nourishment, and Daoyin (guiding and pulling) exercises are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) · *Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: Sit upright, forcefully extend the waist, raise the chest and head, press the palms together facing forward against the mat with force, lower the body as if bowing the head and chest toward the mat, then rise when near the mat. Repeat this up-and-down motion fourteen times. This method removes Pi in the chest and hypochondrium, coldness of the Zang organs, pain and stifling sensation, and heaviness in the waist and spine.
When Yin and Yang are disharmonious, the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) becomes obstructed. When the Sanjiao is obstructed, the distribution of Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) is impaired, causing Qi obstruction and dysfunction, resulting in Ye (Dysphagia/Choking). This is caused by emotional distress and resentment. Distress causes Qi knotting; Qi knotting prevents free flow, leading to Ye. "Ye" refers to obstruction and blockage.
The Five Yehs are defined as: 1. Qi Ye, 2. You Ye (Emotional Ye), 3. Shi Ye (Food Ye), 4. Lao Ye (Fatigue Ye), and 5. Si Ye (Thinking Ye). Although there are five names, all arise from disharmony of Yin and Yang, obstruction of the Sanjiao, impaired movement of Jin-Ye, and emotions such as resentment and anger. They are collectively called Five Yehs. "Ye" refers to obstruction and blockage.
This condition arises from disharmony of Yin and Yang and dysfunction of Zang organ Qi, where Cold pathogenic factors fill the chest and diaphragm, causing Qi obstruction and blockage, hence termed Qi Ye. It manifests as panting, palpitations, and pain in the chest and back.
