Stones will crack when placed in vinegar (Ku Jiu), so crush them to extract the juice and apply it to the carbuncle; it will heal after three applications. Take large larvae of *Scapteromys* found in feces, crush them thoroughly, and apply to the carbuncle; it will also heal within two or three applications, with particularly good results.
Some individuals cannot resolve alcohol intoxication through drinking, food fails to go down, experiencing alternating chills and fever. They feel hot without bathing but cold after bathing. Severe cases last dozens of days, mild cases a few days. They cannot sleep day or night, suffer from worry, anger, self-startled palpitations, fear, mental confusion, and forgetfulness. This is due to long-term violation of warm-herb taboos, irregular living habits, consuming hot foods leading to internal accumulation and excess, causing medicinal heat to run parallel with internal heat, resulting in a struggle between cold and heat. Although treated according to method, it ultimately cannot be resolved. I once experienced this myself: facing food, I shed tears, picked up a knife intending to stab myself, but before I could act, family members forcibly stopped me. Reflecting afterwards, I forced myself to eat cold food and drink cold water, which stopped the symptoms. The disaster was prevented at a very early stage. Anyone who has taken Hanshi San (Cold Food Powder), even if usually intelligent, becomes dull and stubborn upon onset, making it difficult to explain to others. Those who die from this are countless. Urgently drink Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) to purge. During my distress, my whole family knew my condition. Relying on my deceased brother Shiyuan consulting medical texts, we obtained the formula for Sanhuang Tang, administered it to me, and after severe purging, I recovered. Since then, I have used it as an emergency rescue method.
Some individuals feel cold when undressing and hot when dressing, finding no comfort in either state. Thus, they dress for slight cold and undress for slight warmth. Washing brings relief. Do not endure忍耐 (endure); let the disease develop. Washing can lead to complete recovery; enduring leads to established disease.
Some have swollen gums and ulcerated lips, loose and painful teeth, and lockjaw (Jichen). This is due to violating heat taboos and failing to treat promptly. Avoid opening the mouth to the wind to prevent cold air entering the throat; gargle with cold water to heal.
Some have generalized edema and cannot turn or move themselves. This is due to prolonged sitting/stasis, long-term abstinence from alcohol, medicinal qi sinking into the skin, and blocked blood vessels. Drink alcohol, wash with cold water, and engage in self-movement to recover. If unable to walk, have others support and drag them. Go against one's will; do not follow inertia. Stop only when joints are flexible and harmonious. Do not overexert. Overexertion worsens the condition. For heat conditions, wash again.
Some have cold syndromes where food cannot be swallowed, due to long-term consumption of cold food and loss of taste. Prepare white wine congee (Mi), add clarified butter (Su), and consume warm, one or two meals. If feeling stifled, drink frozen beverages or eat cold food.
Some have foul-smelling, ulcerated scrotums, due to sitting on thick mats causing local heat. Sit in cold water to heal.
Some have sores between toes, due to wearing warm shoes. Remove shoes, wear wooden clogs, and wash feet with cold water to heal.
Some have ulcerated armpits, due to arms pressing against ribs. Suspend arms away from ribs and apply cold compresses to heal.
Some suffer from excessive sleepiness without awareness, due to prolonged sitting in stuffy heat. Rise quickly, bathe, and drink cold water to regain clarity. If there is accumulation, observe indications and purge.
Some cannot sleep at night, due to low food intake and internal heat. Take Zhizi Tang (Gardenia Decoction) and frequently consume cold food.
Some have cough and rebellious Qi, injured pharynx, and clear blood discharge, due to warm sitting/sleeping environments or eating hot food. Drink cold water and apply cold compresses externally to the pharynx.
Some contract Shanghan (Cold Damage) or Wen Nue (Warm Malaria), caused by violating heat taboos. For those regularly taking Hanshi San, if illness recurs despite long-term resolution, first rescue with Hanshi methods to avoid cold pathogen invasion. If Shanghan or Warm Malaria occurs, conventional medicines can be used suddenly without fault. However, hot medicines should not be drunk. Shanghan medicines remove heat; malaria medicines remove accumulations. They do not conflict with Hanshi San and can be taken.
Some hide and lie still when medicine erupts, not telling others. This is due to盛 heat, low food intake, insufficient grain Qi, and evil interfering with righteous nature. Drink hot wine/food and engage in moderate labor for improvement.
Some have continuous chills and fever for months, shouting with open mouth, eyes looking high, spirit disconnected from others. Pouring over 100 dan of water daily does not help. This is due to inability to self-labor, drinking cold wine, and eating warm food. It is like a "frozen person": heart becomes colder, cold treatment worsens it because Qi condenses into ice. Heat moxibustion and hot drinks melt the ice and unblock Qi, waking the person. Now, medicinal heat gathers in the heart, causing chills, similar to the frozen person. Quickly give hot wine. When cold resolves and Qi flows, wine Qi moves to limbs, warming the body. Then wash with three dou of cold water until fully lucid.
Pei Jiyan of Hedong took medicine improperly but held the high rank of Three Dukes. People dared not force his desires. After errors occurred, he lacked self-awareness. Attendants had no rescue method, only giving cold water and washing him with hundreds of dan of water. Cold intensified, and he died in the water. Truly pitiable. Ten dan of charcoal extinguished by 200 dan of water. Medicinal heat, though strong, is less than ten dan of fire. Unceasing water pouring kills via cold, not the medicine. One must understand this. Most people fail to rescue correctly. Those taking this medicine must know it themselves, and family members must learn it to rescue each other. I often lose consciousness when the medicine erupts. Even knowing the formula, I lack strength to apply it. Such incidents happen 8-9 times a year. Fortunately, family rescues me using proper methods, yet minor errors still occur. How much worse for those who know nothing!
Some have frequent loose stools, due to long-term loss of moderation. This is a sign of impending death, difficult to treat. If compatible with decoction purging, perhaps one in ten survives. Without decoction, death is certain. Do not fear withholding treatment. If purging causes death, there will be no regret.
Some are exhausted but pulse remains. This is because medicinal Qi dominates all vessels, while true Qi is exhausted. Only medicinal Qi runs independently, so the pulse does not cease. This is not life Qi.
After death, the body may remain warm like living flesh, abdomen rumbles, color unchanged, resembling a corpse after one or two days. Some die immediately after moxibustion, some survive. This depends on the weight of medicinal Qi. Survival after moxibustion is not a cure for the disease and will eventually cause disaster. Be cautious; this happens often.
Some feel mental chaos after taking medicine, due to warm medicines conflicting with pathological knots. Method requires severe vomiting and purging. Without it, death ensues. If vomiting persists, drink cold water to clarify and heal.
Some have unilateral arm/leg cramping pain, due to prolonged lying on warm supports, lack of movement, and heat invading muscles/bones. Frequently soak cloth in cold water and compress; replace when warm.
Some have skin/muscle hard as wood/stone, unable to flex/extend, due to eating hot foods, sleeping warmly, forming accumulations, long-term non-purging, five-zang blockage, and unsmooth blood vessels. Purge, eat cold food, drink alcohol, and self-labor to heal.
Some have generalized edema of limbs/face, due to warm diet/lifestyle, lack of labor, and stagnation of medicinal Qi with righteous Qi. Drink hot wine, eat cold food, self-labor, and wash with cold water to heal.
Some have blindness/closed eyes, due to warm diet/living environment. Undress and wash self; drink frozen beverages/eat cold food. Clarity returns shortly. Some have egg-like odor from nose, due to warm clothing. Undress and wash with cold water to heal.
Some have migrating skin pain, like wind, caused by violating heat taboos, not actual wind pathogen. Wash and compress with cold water to heal.
Some have severe foot pain, due to prolonged sitting on warm surfaces. Sit on single-layer bed, wash with cold water to heal.
Some suffer dizziness/headache, anorexia, due to diet and violating heat taboos, causing chest/diaphragm stagnation. Purge.
Some have unilateral arm/leg cramping pain, due to prolonged sitting/sleeping on warm mats, lack of movement, Qi entering Lung/Stomach/Spleen/Bone. Frequently compress with cold-soaked towel; replace when warm. Heal within two days.
For treating Hanshi San patients, even if cured, the doctor should not claim credit, nor forget efficacy after curing. In ancient times, Wenzhi treated the King of Qi. He made the King angry first, then the disease healed. Wenzhi was killed by the King despite curing him. Rescuing Hanshi San victims requires going against common sense and nature, possibly provoking anger. Unless one is enlightened, after healing, the patient may harbor resentment for being provoked, not appreciating the cure, just as the King killed Wenzhi. Later, the Crown Prince could not save him, let alone ordinary people. Life and death are major events. Knowing one can live but not saving is unrighteous. Only the benevolent persist, risking anger to treat, for the sake of relatives, not just the individual.
All these rescue methods were personally tested by me. No need to ask others. Must violate human norms and reverse normal nature. Heavy clothes causing cold (1st reversal); hunger causing odor (2nd); extreme fatigue requiring self-labor (3rd); warmth causing stagnation (4th); desire for cold food/drink (5th); washing carbuncles with water (6th).
Urgencies: Wash on time (1st); Eat without enduring hunger (2nd); Wine must be pure, clear, and warm (3rd); Remove clothes when warm (4th); Food must be extremely cold (5th); Sleep with thin clothes (6th); Do not dislike abundant food (7th).
Prohibitions: Winter cold seeking fire (1st); Diet desiring heat (2nd); Frequent rash self-doubt (3rd); Fearing wind/coolness (4th); Extreme inability to walk (5th); Fear of abundant food (6th); Living in poverty with thick mats (7th); Following desires blindly (8th).
Must violate common sense, without doubt (1st); Abandon root/focus, without doubt (2nd); Sleep/live in cold, without doubt (3rd).
