Ezu disease manifests as mental restlessness and oppression, dizziness, soreness and pain in the four limbs, lethargy and reluctance to work, aversion to the smell of food, craving for salty and sour fruits, excessive sleepiness with little rising, which is colloquially called "aversion to food" (Eshi), or alternatively written as "Evil Character" (Ezi) referring to pregnancy reactions. In severe cases lasting beyond three or four months, patients may be unable to support themselves. This condition arises because the woman originally had a weak and emaciated constitution, insufficient Qi and Blood, and weak Kidney Qi, compounded by excessive exposure to Wind and consumption of cold foods/drinks, leading to Phlegm-Fluid retention in the epigastrium while simultaneously becoming pregnant. Once the menstrual blood ceases, Water-Dampness infiltrates the Zang organs, causing their Qi to fail in circulating and unblocking freely; thus, there is mental irritability and oppression, rebellious Qi leading to vomiting; when Blood vessels are blocked and meridians become obstructed and stagnant, the four limbs feel heavy; if accompanied by Wind, the head and eyes become dizzy. Therefore, one desires conception but suffers from Ezu. The phrase "desiring conception" refers to a state where menstruation still occurs normally, complexion and skin appear normal, yet the person suffers from heaviness and oppression, lack of appetite, and is unaware of the source of discomfort; when the pulse is smooth and harmonious according to the season, this indicates impending conception. After two months have passed in such a manner, one perceives the cessation of menstruation, indicating that the fetus has formed.
When Yin and Yang are harmonized and the two Qi interact, Yang acts and Yin transforms, resulting in pregnancy. If conception occurs during the time associated with the convergence of the Three Yin channels, female offspring are more likely. However, at two months of pregnancy, it is named "Shi Cang" (Beginning Storage), where Jing-Essence forms within the Bao Palace (Uterus). By the third month, it is named "Shi Tai" (Beginning Fetus); the Blood vessels cease flowing (the embryo stabilizes), changing according to form, without a fixed shape yet, transforming upon seeing external objects. At this stage, male and female distinctions are not yet clear. Therefore, for those less than three months pregnant, medicinal prescriptions and methods can be used to influence the outcome, aiming for a male child.
Pregnant women who have pre-existing conditions or rashes may develop complications upon conception. Alternatively, improper lifestyle management during pregnancy can lead to illness, damaging the Zang-Fu organs and weakening Qi and vitality, thereby hindering fetal growth. Thus, it is necessary to administer medicine to eliminate diseases and tonify Qi and Blood to nourish and support the fetus.
During the period when the fetus's sex is undifferentiated and its form is not yet fixed, transforming upon external stimuli, the mother must maintain dignity, solemnity, purity, and harmony, avoiding distorted gazes and listening to improper sounds. While in the womb, before the full term of months, Yin and Yang are not fully developed, and the Zang-Fu organs and bone joints are not completely formed. Therefore, from the beginning until delivery, diet and living habits must adhere to specific principles...
