The Liver stores Blood, the Lung governs Qi, and the nose is the orifice of the Lung. Blood and Qi follow each other in their circulation, nourishing the Zang-Fu organs internally and traversing the meridians externally. When heat exists within the Zang-Fu organs, it affects the Blood and Qi; since Blood tends to flow and overflow when heated, it may act recklessly and manifest as epistaxis (nosebleed) from the nose. Due to deficiency of the Zang organs and excess of Blood heat, the epistaxis persists without stopping.
Epistaxis arises from deficiency-heat in Blood and Qi. The Liver stores Blood, the Lung governs Qi, and the nose is its orifice. Blood and Qi circulate together along the meridians, nourishing the Zang-Fu organs. If Ying-Nutrient Blood is excessively damaged, heat generates within the Zang-Fu organs. This heat attacks Blood and Qi, causing the Blood to scatter and flow recklessly due to heat. What flows from the nose is termed "Nu" (epistaxis). The term "great nasal Nu" refers to a condition where severe epistaxis causes bleeding from both the mouth and the nose simultaneously, hence the name.
Epistaxis occurs because heat attacks Blood and Qi. The Liver stores Blood, the Lung governs Qi, and the nose is the orifice of the Lung. Fatigue and damage to the Zang-Fu organs generate heat in Blood and Qi. When Blood is heated, it scatters and flows recklessly, ascending with Qi to emerge from the nose, presenting as various forms of epistaxis. If the Zang organs remain deficient and fail to recover, and fatigue-heat stagnates and accumulates, the epistaxis becomes chronic and does not heal.
The Lung governs Qi, and its meridian is the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian; Lung Qi connects to the nose. If the Lung organ is harmonious, nasal Qi is unobstructed, and one can distinguish odors. However, if wind-cold pathogens injure the Zang-Fu organs, and evil qi invades the Taiyin Meridian, Qi stagnates in the nose. Consequently, body fluids become obstructed, nasal Qi fails to circulate smoothly, and one loses the ability to smell, resulting in nasal obstruction (bi). For such conditions, decoctions, moxibustion/warming therapies, acupuncture, and stone therapy have specific formulas. Nourishing and Daoyin (guiding and pulling) methods are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) · *Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: Sit facing east, hold your breath three times, and pinch the two nostrils with your fingers to treat nasal diseases. Sit with legs crossed to treat nasal diseases; this also helps clear abscesses on the feet, expel mucus and saliva, open the nasal passages, and restore the sense of smell. Practicing this continuously over time allows one to perceive sounds from all directions.
The nose is the external manifestation of the Lung, and Lung Qi connects to the nose. If there is heat in the Lung organ, hot Qi rushes to the nose, causing sores to form. For such conditions, decoctions, warming therapies, acupuncture, and stone therapy have specific formulas. Nourishing and Daoyin methods are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang* · *Daoyin Fa* states: Assume a squatting position, keep both knees together, spread both feet apart, and hold your breath five times. This treats nasal sores.
