This is caused by wind-cold pathogenic factors invading the intestines and stomach; when the intestines and stomach are deficient, dysentery occurs. After prolonged dysentery, the intestines become empty, and wind pathogens lodge in the anal region. The pathogenic factors contend with the healthy qi (vital energy), resulting in swelling.
When the body is deficient and exposed to wind-cold, the wind-cold enters the intestines, causing dysentery. The sensation of deficiency-heat irritability after dysentery arises because the fu and zang organs remain deficient, and qi contends internally. The essence from food and drink nourishes the zang and fu organs; during dysentery, the consumption of food and drink increases, leading to weakness in the zang and fu organs. After the cessation of dysentery, if qi has not yet regulated and cannot circulate freely, the qi at the skin and interstices (skin texture and pores) will contend with the zang and fu organs. Since the zang and fu organs are deficient, this mutual contention of qi causes deficiency-heat irritability.
Swelling after dysentery is due to the continued deficiency of the spleen and stomach, where the muscles are attacked by wind and water pathogens. When the spleen and stomach are weak and subjected to wind pathogens, the transformation of food and drink results in dysentery. The spleen and stomach are exterior-interior partners, both corresponding to Earth in the Five Phases. The stomach is the sea of food and drink, and the spleen governs the muscles. The nature of Earth controls Water. In cases of dysentery, the spleen and stomach are weak, and Earth qi declines, failing to control Water. This allows water to flow recklessly and overflow into the muscles. Although dysentery has ceased, the water remains uneliminated. Since the muscles were previously attacked by wind pathogens, wind and water contend, and the closure of the skin and interstices leads to swelling.
Inability to eat after dysentery is caused by spleen and stomach deficiency and rebellious qi in the chest. Wind pathogens enter the intestines and stomach, causing dysentery, which depletes food and drink essence, weakening the spleen and stomach. After dysentery stops, the spleen and stomach remain deficient and cannot withstand food intake. Pathogenic factors contend with qi, causing it to rebel upward; the weak stomach fails to accept food.
Abdominal pain after dysentery occurs because a deficient body contracts wind-cold, which enters the intestines and stomach, leading to abdominal pain following dysentery. The organ qi remains deficient, residual wind-cold heat has not fully dissipated, and the zang and fu organs have not returned to balance. Cold qi lingers inside, contending with the zang and fu organs, while healthy qi and pathogenic factors strike each other, causing abdominal pain.
Rebellious fullness below the heart after dysentery is caused by organ deficiency and retained fluids (fluid retention) below the heart, with rebellious qi attacking the area. Wind pathogens enter the intestines and stomach, causing lower dysentery, which weakens the fu and zang organs. After dysentery ceases, the fu and zang organs are not yet harmonized, and pathogenic factors have not completely dissipated. Pathogens attack qi, causing rebellion; together with food and drink, they contend and move upward, resulting in rebellious fullness below the heart.
