Damp Tinea (Shi Xuan) presents with defined borders, a sensation resembling insects crawling on the skin, progressive infiltration and spreading, redness, dampness, and itching. Scratching leads to exudation and ulceration. This occurs because the pathogenic wind-toxin is superficial, with dampness predominating over wind; hence it is termed Damp Tinea. Pathogenic worms are also present within the lesion.
Wind Tinea (Feng Xuan) arises from the invasion of chilling wind-cold into the skin, which obstructs the flow of Qi and Blood. It also manifests with circular borders, but scratching results in numbness and induration, accompanied by a loss of pain and itch sensation. Pathogenic worms are also present within the lesion.
The manifestation of White Tinea (Bai Xuan) involves whitish skin lesions accompanied by itching. This is caused by deficiency at the interstices (Cou Li), allowing wind pathogens to invade; wind combines with Qi, causing blood stasis... [Text incomplete]
Folklore states: Using water remaining from a vessel used to drink for cattle to wash hands or face causes tinea, known as Cattle Tinea (Niu Xuan). The skin becomes thickened, hard, and rigid upon scratching... [Text incomplete]
Round Tinea (Yuan Xuan) presents with circular patterns slightly raised above the skin surface, redness around the periphery, and associated itching and pain. Pathogenic worms are also generated within.
Folklore states: Water licked by dogs, when used to wash hands or face, causes tinea. The lesions are slightly white, dotted and connected, with mild itching. Pathogenic worms are also present within... [Text incomplete]
Sparrow-Eye Tinea (Que Yan Xuan) is also generated by wind-dampness. Its texture is fine and resembles sparrow eyes, hence the name. Scratching induces itching, and worms are present within.
Folklore states: Using water from sharpening knives to wash hands or face causes tinea, named Knife Tinea (Dao Xuan). The shape lacks defined borders, being irregular in vertical and horizontal directions. Worms are also present within... [Text incomplete]
Chronic Tinea (Jiu Xuan) refers to various types of tinea infested with worms that persist and fail to heal over a long period. The manifestations of tinea include hidden papules on the skin and flesh resembling coin patterns, gradually enlarging, either round or oblique, accompanied by itching and pain, with defined borders, and exudation upon scratching. There is also Dry Tinea (Gan Xuan), characterized by dry, rough, and scaly skin, itching, and white scales appearing upon scratching. There is Damp Tinea (Shi Xuan), presenting with a crawling sensation, infiltration, redness, damp itching, and abundant exudate upon scratching. There is Wind Tinea (Feng Xuan), where scratching causes numbness and loss of sensation. There is Cattle Tinea (Niu Xuan), acquired from washing hands/face with leftover cow-drinking water, presenting with thickened skin that feels hard upon scratching. There is Round Tinea (Yuan Xuan), presenting with raised circular patterns and redness on all sides. There is Dog Tinea (Gou Xuan), acquired from using water licked by dogs to wash hands/face, presenting with slightly white, connected dotted lesions and mild itching. There is Sparrow-Eye Tinea (Que Yan Xuan), with fine patterns resembling sparrow eyes, causing itching and pain upon scratching. There is Knife Tinea (Dao Xuan), acquired from using knife-sharpening water to wash hands/face, presenting without fixed borders and irregular orientation. These types of tinea initially arise either from wind-damp pathogens invading the muscles and skin, obstructing Qi and Blood, or from using leftover water from cattle or dogs to wash hands and face. Once the disease is established, worms invade and consume the tissue, deepening the condition and causing chronic persistence, thus forming Chronic Tinea.
