In cases of Wei syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome) where patients cannot get out of bed, people generally attribute the inability to move their lower limbs to a disease in the lower body. However, it is not so simple; Wei syndrome is divided into upper and lower types. The so-called "Upper Wei" does not refer to flaccidity of the hands, but rather involves pathology of the Lung and the Yangming channels. Although all Wei syndromes are treated via the Yangming channel, failing to treat the Yangming channel makes it difficult to restore function. Nevertheless, there are cases where Yangming pathology involves the Lung meridian, constituting an upper-body condition that cannot be compared to lower-body Wei syndrome. Such cases inevitably present with coughing, expectoration of purulent sputum or ordinary phlegm, and weakness in both legs. While these symptoms resemble those of lower Wei syndrome, the treatment method must not be the same.
I now prescribe a formula for treating Upper Wei, which is miraculous and named *Qiwei Shangqing Dan* (Rising Flaccidity Upper-Clearing Elixir). This formula essentially treats the Yangming channel, but its brilliance lies in using Honeysuckle Flower (*Jinyinhua*, *Lonicerae Japonicae Flos*) to treat flaccidity within the Lung, clearing Lung Qi, which naturally generates Kidney Water downward. Once Kidney Water is generated, marrow within the bones is naturally produced; why is it necessary to tonify the Kidney further? Moreover, the ingredients in this formula are light and clear, dispersing fire. Their light nature allows them to ascend and dissipate fire in the Lung and Stomach, causing the flame of the Yangming channel to no longer rush upward to the Lung, thereby calming Lung Qi. This principle is self-evident without need for complex analysis.
As for Lower Wei syndrome, although treatment cannot depart from the Yangming channel, it fundamentally focuses on tonifying the Kidney. Weakness in both legs is essentially due to a lack of marrow in the bones, and marrow is refined essence from the Kidney. Without tonifying essence, where would marrow come from? Furthermore, the Yangming Stomach channel serves as the "gate" for the Kidney; tonifying the Kidney is precisely how one tonifies the Stomach. Symptoms include: strong appetite with frequent hunger, face red as fire, symptoms lighter during the day and heavier at night, and expectoration of watery phlegm. For this, use *Jianggu Qiwei Dan* (Bone-Solidifying Rising Flaccidity Elixir). The brilliance of this formula lies in tonifying the Kidney while simultaneously supporting the Stomach, making it universally effective for Lower Wei syndrome. However, Wei disease does not respond to just one or two doses. I hope patients adhere to my prescription, taking it morning and evening, ensuring that no one remains bedridden for long.
