A woman experiences pain in the lower abdomen, with restless fetus and a sensation of falling. People attribute this to the weakness of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel), but who would know it is actually due to deficiency of both Spleen and Kidney? Although the Bao Luo (Fetus) is connected to the Dai Mai, the function of the Dai Mai is actually closely related to the Spleen and Kidney. When these two meridians are deficient, the strength of the Dai Mai becomes weak, how can the Bao Luo bear its burden? However, the reason for Spleen and Kidney deficiency is either excessive food intake or excessive sexual desire. If one does not tonify the Spleen and Kidney, but instead the Dai Mai becomes tense and urgent, the Bao Luo will fall. Moreover, the Bao Luo connects to the Heart and Kidney, not directly to the Spleen; is it sufficient to only tonify the Kidney? Why must one also tonify the Spleen? One must understand that the Spleen and Stomach are the Post-Heaven (Acquired) Foundation, while the Kidney is the Pre-Heaven (Innate) Foundation. The Spleen cannot transform without Pre-Heaven Qi, and the Kidney cannot generate without Post-Heaven Qi. If one tonifies the Kidney without tonifying the Spleen, the essence and true Qi of the Kidney cannot be rapidly generated. Tonifying the Post-Heaven Spleen is precisely to tonify the Pre-Heaven Kidney; tonifying both Pre- and Post-Heaven Spleen and Kidney is precisely to consolidate the Qi of the Bao Luo. Since the Bao Luo originally possesses Pre- and Post-Heaven Qi, how can one neglect to tonify both? Use An Dian Er Tian Tang (Stabilize and Secure Two Heavens Decoction): Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 5 qian), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, 1 qian), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 3 qian), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, 2 qian), Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the pain stops; after two doses, the fetus is stabilized; no need for a third dose.
Restless fetus is a symptom of dual deficiency of Spleen and Kidney. It is necessary to use large doses of Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, and Shu Di Huang, which tonify Yin and Yang, to reverse the situation instantly. People often fear using Ren Shen and Bai Zhu, or use small amounts hoping for efficacy, which反而 results in poor effect. The brilliance of this formula lies in the heavy usage.
Yu Qin Tang (Entertain Parents Decoction) is also effective.
Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Gan Cao (1 qian), Ren Shen (5 qian), Du Zhong (5 qian), Shan Yao (5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
When a woman is pregnant for three to four months, she feels dry mouth and tongue, slight sore throat, and lack of fluids to moisten, leading to restless fetus. In severe cases, bleeding occurs resembling menstruation. People attribute this to Fire agitation, but who knows it is due to Water deficiency? The fetus requires male essence to form and female essence to complete. Monthly nourishment of the fetus, though divided by meridians in ancient texts, essentially relies on Kidney Water for nourishment. Thus, sufficient Kidney Water stabilizes the fetus, while deficient Kidney Water causes restlessness, and only when Kidney Fire agitates does the fetus become unsettled. Excess Fire is still due to insufficient Water. To calm Fire-agitated fetus, tonifying Kidney Water is sufficient. However, Kidney Water cannot be generated quickly; one must tonify Lung Metal above, so Metal generates Water, providing a source for Water, making rootless Fire easy to control. Adding a few heat-clearing herbs in the formula helps stabilize fetal Qi easily. Use Run Zao An Tai Tang (Moisten Dryness and Stabilize Fetus Decoction): Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (5 qian), Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba, 2 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 qian), E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, 2 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 2 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, dryness decreases; after another two doses, the fetus stabilizes; continuous use for ten doses ensures the fetus remains stable.
This formula specifically replenishes essence in the Kidney. Although it treats the Lung, tonifying the Lung is essentially tonifying the Kidney. Thus, if Kidney essence is not dry and Fire does not scorch the fetus, how can it not be tranquil?
E Yan San (Suppress Flame Powder) is also effective.
Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 5 qian), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex, 5 qian), Mai Dong (5 qian), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 5 fen), Chao Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Praeparatum, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
A woman suffers from vomiting and diarrhea, causing restless fetus and downward bearing pain, unbearable and urgent. People attribute this to extreme Cold of Spleen and Stomach, but who knows it is extreme deficiency of Spleen and Stomach? Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency renders the Bao Luo powerless, risking collapse and falling. Added with vomiting and diarrhea, Spleen-Stomach becomes even more deficient, making it impossible for the Bao Luo to remain safe. However, although the Bao Luo hurts, it has not fallen because although Spleen-Stomach is damaged, Kidney Qi remains solid. The Bao Luo is tied to the Kidney and connected to the Heart. If the Kidney is undamaged, Kidney Qi communicates with the Heart, and Heart Qi connects to the Bao Luo, preventing fetal expulsion. Furthermore, if Kidney Qi is solid, Kidney Qi generates Spleen; if Heart Qi is open, Heart Qi supports Stomach. Although Spleen-Stomach is weak but not extinct, the Bao Luo moves but does not fall. Should the treatment not urgently rescue Spleen-Stomach? However, if Spleen-Stomach is near extinction, rescuing only Spleen-Stomach makes Earth Qi hard to generate. Supplementing Heart-Kidney Fire allows Fire to generate Earth, facilitating continuity. Use Yuan Tu Gu Tai Tang (Support Earth and Secure Fetus Decoction): Ren Shen (1 liang), Bai Zhu (2 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 qian), Shan Yao (1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 5 fen), Zhi Gan Cao (1 qian), Du Zhong (3 qian), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, 3 qian), Gou Qi Zi (2 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (1 liang), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, 3 qian), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 3 grains). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, diarrhea stops; after two doses, vomiting stops; abdominal pain and urgency cease completely.
This formula rescues Spleen-Stomach Earth by 80% and Heart-Kidney Fire by 20%. Rescuing Fire lightly compared to Earth: is it because Earth is about to collapse while Fire is not? No. Earth collapsing requires heavy doses to support, while extinguishing Fire can be aided by small doses. Using too many hot herbs risks excessive dryness, unlike warm-tonifying herbs which can be used more freely. Moreover, restless fetus in pregnancy is originally due to Earth decline, not Fire decline. Why use strongly hot formulas to overly assist Earth and damage Fetal Qi?
Pi Wei Liang An Tang (Spleen and Stomach Dual Peace Decoction) is also effective.
Bai Zhu (5 qian), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Ren Shen (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 fen), Sha Ren (1 grain), Shan Yao (1 liang), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
A woman harbors depression, causing restless fetus and distending pain in both hypochondria, feeling like the fetus is hanging upwards. People attribute this to Zi Xuan (Fetal Suspension) disease, but who knows it is due to stagnation of Liver Qi? Nourishing the fetus relies half on Kidney Water, but without assisting Liver Blood, Kidney Water would struggle alone. If the Liver Meridian is not depressed, Liver Qi is not closed, and Liver Blood is relaxed, naturally pouring into the Bao Luo to assist insufficient Kidney Water. Now, due to depression, the Liver becomes blocked and closed. Without blood nourishment, how can the fetus not rise upward to seek nourishment? This inevitably leads to Zi Xuan. It is Qi that causes rising, not the fetus wanting to hang itself. Treatment should not target Zi Xuan by purging the fetus, but rather open Liver Qi stagnation and tonify Liver Blood dryness, then Zi Xuan will settle naturally. Use Jie Xuan Tang (Resolve Suspension Decoction): Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus Praeparatum, 3 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 5 fen), Sha Ren (3 grains), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Ren Shen (1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, distending pain disappears; after two doses, Zi Xuan settles; after three doses, full peace. Removing Zhi Zi and taking several more doses is especially wonderful.
This formula is a sacred medicine for soothing the Liver and resolving depression. Once depression opens, Liver does not overact on Earth; once Liver is peaceful, Wood does not generate Fire. Moreover, the formula contains herbs that strengthen Spleen and generate Stomach Qi. Naturally, grain essence is produced and distributed to all Zang-Fu. With moistening mechanisms in Liver and Kidney, the Bao Luo has no risk of dryness, so why would the infant hang upwards?
Tong Gan San (Unblock Liver Powder) is also good.
Bai Shao (1 liang), Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Yu Jin (Curcumae Longae Radix, 1 qian), Bo He (1 qian), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 2 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 2 qian), Chen Pi (3 fen), Su Ye (Perillae Folium, 5 fen), Bai Zhu (5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
A woman suffers from a fall or sprain, damaging the fetal origin, causing pain. People attribute this to external injury, but who knows it is still internal injury? Falls, bumps, sprains, and twists can disturb the fetus. Treating as external injury yields no result. Some even miscarry due to treatment. It is necessary to greatly tonify Qi and Blood, adding a little moving herbs, so stasis dissipates and the fetus stabilizes. Tonifying Blood should be heavy, tonifying Qi light. Use Jiu Sun Tang (Rescue Injury Decoction).
Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian), Bai Shao (3 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Ren Shen (1 qian), Sheng Di Huang (1 liang), Gan Cao (1 qian), Su Mu (Daemonorops Draco, 3 qian), Ru Xiang Mo (Boswelliae Resina Pulvis, 1 qian), Mo Yao Mo (Myrrhae Resina Pulvis, 1 qian). Decoct in water and wine and take orally. After one dose, pain stops; after two doses, fetus does not abort; no need for a third dose.
This formula removes stasis without harming the fetus. By tonifying Blood and Qi, there is no worry of stagnation, nor harm of slippery purgation. It achieves miraculous results for injuries without fetus, and even more remarkable results for injuries with fetus.
Jiu Shang San (Rescue Trauma Powder) can also be used.
Gui Shen (1 liang), Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (5 qian), Du Zhong (5 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
A woman’s fetus does not move, and her abdomen does not hurt, but blood flows out occasionally. People attribute this to Blood deficiency causing Tai Lou (Fetal Leakage), but who knows it is Qi deficiency failing to hold Blood? Blood nourishes the fetus, and blood within the fetus relies on Qi to contain it. Qi deficiency sinking causes Blood to sink with it. Qi deficiency leads to relative Blood excess; Blood excess leads to Heat. Cold Blood is static, Hot Blood is active. Activity brings signs of jumping out. Added with Qi deficiency, how can it not leak? Fortunately, it is Qi deficiency. If Qi were strong and Blood hot, massive hemorrhage would occur; this is merely slight leakage. Treatment: tonify insufficient Qi, drain excess Fire, then Blood stops spontaneously without intervention. Use Zhu Qi Bu Lou Tang (Assist Qi and Stop Leakage Decoction): Ren Shen (1 liang), Gan Cao (1 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian), Huang Qin (3 qian), Sheng Di Huang (3 qian), Yi Mu Cao (2 qian), Xu Duan (2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, bleeding stops; after second dose, no further leakage.
This formula uses Ren Shen to tonify Yang Qi and Huang Qin to drain Yin Fire. Draining Fire makes Blood not hot, removing the urge to move. Tonifying Qi allows Blood to be contained, leaving no opening for leakage. Naturally, Qi holds Blood and Blood returns to its vessels. How could there be leakage?
She Xue Dan (Stop Bleeding Pill) is also effective.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 5 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Ren Shen (2 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba, 1 qian), Po Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus, 1 qian), Xu Duan (2 qian), Rou Guo (Myristicae Semen, 1 piece). Decoct in water and take orally.
A woman at seven or eight months of pregnancy suddenly hears crying in the abdomen, with dull pain. People attribute this to Fetal Heat, but who knows it is Qi deficiency? While in the womb, the fetus breathes with the mother, inhaling when she inhales, exhaling when she exhales, without interruption. However, by seven or eight months, maternal Qi becomes deficient. The fetus cannot breathe with maternal Qi, losing maternal Qi and thus crying. Crying sounds in the abdomen seem strange, but need not be. Treatment: greatly tonify Qi, so maternal Qi can nourish the fetus. Once fetal Qi is peaceful, fetal crying ceases. Use Zhi Ti Tang (Stop Crying Decoction): Ren Shen (1 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Dang Gui (5 qian), Mai Dong (1 liang), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 5 fen), Gan Cao (1 qian), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, crying stops; after two doses, it never recurs.
This formula uses Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Dang Gui, and Mai Dong to tonify Lung Qi, as the Lung governs Qi. Strong Lung Qi prevents weak Bao Luo Qi, ensuring the fetus inside is peaceful. Hence, efficacy in one or two doses.
Jie Qi Yin (Connect Qi Drink) is also effective.
Ren Shen (5 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Huang Qi (5 qian), Mai Dong (5 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Dang Gui (3 qian), Bei Mu (1 qian), Shen Qu (1 qian), Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum, 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, crying stops; after four doses, no recurrence.
A woman experiences thirst, sweating, drinking cold water excessively, irritability, madness, abdominal pain, and back pain, leading to restless fetus threatening abortion. This is due to blazing Stomach Fire boiling away the water of the Bao Luo. The Stomach is the Sea of Grain and Water, rich in Qi and Blood, nourishing all Zang-Fu. All things are born from Earth; thick Earth Qi generates objects because there is Fire in Earth. Fire in the Stomach should generate Earth, why does excess Fire cause excessive dryness harming Earth? Not knowing that without Fire, Earth cannot be generated, but too much Fire scorches Water. Earth with Fire does not die, but Earth without Water becomes scorched earth. Excessive Stomach Fire first scorches Kidney Water, causing Earth to crack and dry, unable to moisten the Bao Luo. Extreme Earth scorching leads to blazing Fire invading the Heart and disturbing Spirit, forcing the infant downwards, causing abortion. Treatment: urgently drain Fire, supplement with Water. Abundant Water makes Fire decline; declining Fire stabilizes the fetus. Use Zhi Fen Ding Tai Yin (Stop Burning and Stabilize Fetus Decoction): Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 2 liang), Gan Ju (Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 qian), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 5 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Sheng Di Huang (1 liang), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Ren Shen (3 qian), Tian Hua Fen (2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, madness slightly calms; after two doses, madness largely settles; after three doses, Fire is resolved, and fetus is stable; no need for fourth dose.
The ingredients are large, fearing intolerance. But with such盛 Fire in pregnancy, without large doses, Fire won't subside, madness won't stop, and fetus won't calm. Although many ingredients, they are all Water-nourishing, beneficial without harm, no need for hesitation.
Zi Tai Yin (Nourish Fetus Decoction) is also effective.
Mai Dong (2 liang), Huang Qin (3 qian), Sheng Di Huang (1 liang), Gui Shen (1 liang), Tian Hua Fen (2 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, madness settles; after four doses, cured.
A pregnant woman has much phlegm and salivation. Upon encountering evil spirits, she suddenly has abdominal pain, and the fetus pushes upwards. People attribute this to Zi Xuan, but who knows it can also be caused by Zhong E (Poisoning by Evil) unsettling the fetus? Any irregular Qi most harms the fetus. Yin evils and Yang spirits often reside in temples or hidden dark caves, places of passage, easily triggered upon contact. Pregnant women must beware. Treatment seems to focus on Phlegm, but treating Phlegm consumes Qi, causing Phlegm to resolve but fetus to shake. Must tonify Qi to generate Blood, tonify Blood to treat Phlegm, adding a little Phlegm-resolving herb. Then Qi and Blood are not depleted, and Phlegm transforms easily. Use Xiao E An Tai Tang (Eliminate Evil and Stabilize Fetus Decoction): Bai Zhu (5 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Bai Shao (1 liang), Chen Pi (5 fen), Su Ye (1 qian), Chen Xiang Mo (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum Pulvis, 1 qian), Ru Xiang Mo (1 qian), Tian Hua Fen (3 qian), Dang Gui (1 liang), Ren Shen (3 qian), Fu Ling (5 qian). Decoct in water, mix, and take orally. After one dose, abdominal pain settles, and evil spirits retreat.
This formula greatly tonifies Qi and Blood, focusing on the Root. When Righteous Qi is sufficient, Evil dissipates naturally; when Phlegm clears, fetus stabilizes.
San E Hu Tai Dan (Dispel Evil and Protect Fetus Pill) is also effective.
Ren Shen (3 qian), Fu Ling (5 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bei Mu (1 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix, 1 qian), Guan Zhong (Dryopteridis Crassirhizoma Rhizoma, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, fetus stabilizes.
After pregnancy, before formation or already formed, the fetus always aborts, and the temperament is very irritable with frequent anger. People attribute this to Qi-Blood decline failing to secure the fetus, but who knows it is due to盛 Liver Fire, constantly moving and not quiet? Wood contains Ministerial Fire, which should be quiet, not moving. Quiet means peace, moving means blazing. Fire in Wood is easiest to move and hardest to quiet. Added with great anger, Fire moves uncontrollably. Blazing Fire cannot generate Qi to transform into fetus, but instead consumes Qi and damages Essence, naturally difficult to nourish and prone to abortion. Treatment must calm Liver Fire and greatly benefit Qi in waist and umbilicus, so Qi generates Blood, and Blood clears Fire. Use Li Qi Xie Huo Tang (Benefit Qi and Drain Fire Decoction): Bai Zhu (1 liang), Dang Gui (3 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Huang Qin (2 qian), Ren Shen (3 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian), Shu Di Huang (5 qian), Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Taking for two months, the fetus does not abort.
Named "Benefit Qi," it is actually tonifying Qi. Tonifying Qi without draining Fire herbs makes Qi strong but Fire uncalmed, harming Qi instead. Adding Huang Qin to Qi tonification, plus Shu Di, Dang Gui, and Bai Shao to nourish Liver, makes Blood not dry and Qi harmonious. With harmonious Qi and Blood, benefiting Qi is unnecessary as it benefits naturally. Moreover, Bai Zhu best benefits waist and umbilicus.
Xi Nu Yang Ren Tang (Calm Anger and Nourish Pregnancy Decoction) is also good.
Bai Shao (2 liang), Fu Ling (5 qian), Ren Shen (3 qian), Chen Pi (5 fen), Gan Cao (1 qian), Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Sheng Di Huang (5 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Shen Qu (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
