A person may have a penis that remains erect all day long, never willing to become flaccid. However, upon copulation with a woman, semen is ejaculated immediately. After ejaculation, the erection rises again. People attribute this to the fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life), but little do they know it is actually extreme deficiency of Yin. Yin and Yang should originally be in balance. Without Yang, Yin will escape and semen will leak; without Yin, Yang will stand alone and remain erect. Both conditions can be fatal. Comparing the two, the syndrome of Yin escape leads to sudden death, while the disease of Yang isolation leads to slow death. It seems that sudden death is difficult to treat, while slow death is easier to cure. Yet who knows that in the syndrome of Yin escape, Yang is not yet exhausted, so tonifying Yang can secure Yin; whereas in the disease of Yang isolation, Yin has already dried up, so tonifying Yin cannot easily control Yang. Since Yang generates quickly and Yin connects slowly, cases of Yin escape leaving Yang often can be rescued, while cases of isolated Yang without Yin are frequently incurable. Although Yin roots in Yang, and tonifying Yang can generate Yin, how can it be said that Yang does not root in Yin? If tonifying Yin cannot generate Yang? If a person with persistent erection still has a thread of Yin remaining, then Yin can surely be continued and generated. Once Yin is generated, Yang will no longer be isolated. As Yin flourishes daily, Yang becomes peaceful daily. Who would say this is not a wonderful method for seeking life from death? The formula used is Pingyang Tang: Xuan Shen (3 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (1 liang), Sha Shen (2 liang), Di Gu Pi (1 liang), Dan Pi (1 liang). Decoct in water and take orally. After taking two doses consecutively, the erection was no longer very frequent. After taking four more doses, the erection decreased slightly. After another four doses, the erection returned to normal peace.
This formula consists purely of Yin-tonifying herbs, which can also cool the marrow in the bones. Fearing that pure Yin might clash with Yang, Shan Zhu Yu is added because it contains Yang within Yin, guiding Yin into Yang to restrain its excessive rigidity. This is truly skillful in controlling rigidity. If one sees extreme fire prosperity and recklessly uses Huang Bo or Zhi Mu to extinguish the fire with cold-natured herbs, not only will water fail to extinguish fire, but it will also agitate the Dragon-Lei Fire (hyperactive ministerial fire). Yin will fail to enter Yang, and Yang will separate from Yin, leading inevitably to death.
This condition can also be treated with Jiyang Tang: Shu Di (2 liang), Xuan Shen, Mai Dong, Sha Shen (each 1 liang). Long-term use will bring natural peace.
A person who worries constantly, studies diligently, and searches hard for ideas when writing essays, then engages vigorously in sexual intercourse, may suffer from persistent erection, chest irritability, thirst, red and swollen eyes, and drinking water provides no relief. People think this is extreme Yang prosperity, but little do they know it is simultaneous movement of Heart Fire and Kidney Fire. The Heart and Kidney interact at all times. When Heart Qi descends to the Kidney, Kidney Fire has no danger of soaring; when Kidney Qi ascends to the Heart, Heart Fire has no worry of hyperactivity. If the Heart is labored during the day, Heart Qi does not descend to the Kidney; if the Kidney is labored at night, Kidney Qi does not ascend to the Heart. When Heart and Kidney do not interact, Water and Fire cannot achieve Ji Ji (mutual interaction). One feels nothing but fire throughout the body. Thus, the Heart Monarch loses authority, Kidney Water lacks strength, and the Mingmen Fire and Pericardium Fire merge and do not separate. The marrow moves, the Sea of Marrow is scorched, the Dragon-Lei Fire in the Liver rises in response, and the Sanjiao Fire joins in to assist its upward-burning momentum. All fire qi rises, leaving Yang nowhere to lodge. Forced to return downward, it finds the lower Jiao unable to store it, so it flows between the Zongjin (genitals). Yang thus becomes strong and cannot fall. This is a critically dangerous condition. Unless the two fires are rapidly resolved, how can Yang fall? However, resolving fire prohibits using cold-natured herbs to directly suppress it, because these two fires are Deficient Fire, not Excess Fire. Only by guiding fire back to its meridian and using a small amount of mildly cold herbs to retreat floating fire can the fire return to its source, avoiding rupture risks. The formula used is Yinghuo Liang'an Tang: Xuan Shen (1 liang), Mai Dong (2 liang), Dan Pi (5 qian), Sha Shen (1 liang), Huang Lian (1 qian), Rou Gui (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, fire decreases slightly; after two doses, Yang falls. After four consecutive doses, fire stabilizes. Reduce Huang Lian and Rou Gui to 3 fen each, and take several more doses until the two fires no longer move.
This formula tonifies Yin to retreat Yang, without heavy or cloying substances in the Yin-tonification. With Huang Lian and Rou Gui used together, they facilitate Heart-Kidney interaction. When Heart and Kidney unite, Water Qi generates; when Water Qi generates, Fire naturally resolves. Moreover, Xuan Shen, Mai Dong, and Sha Shen are herbs that reduce fire and nourish water, enabling them to retreat floating fire and resolve the disaster of hyperactive Yang.
This condition can also be treated with Jiajian Jixin Dan: Ren Shen, Chao Suan Zao Ren (each 5 qian), Shu Di, Xuan Shen, Mai Dong, Dan Pi (each 1 liang), Lian Zi Xin, Fu Ling (each 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Peace is achieved in four doses.
