Xiangfu (3 fen), Baishao (1 liang), Jingjie (5 fen), Maidong (3 qian), Fushen (3 qian), Baizhu (3 qian), Sheng Zaoren (3 qian), Renshen (5 fen), Shenqu (3 fen), Gancao (1 fen), Chaihu (5 fen), Baijiezi (5 fen).
Decoct with water and take orally. After ten doses, the Liver Qi opens; after another ten doses, the Heart Qi opens; after yet another ten doses, the Spleen and Stomach Qi are fully opened.
This formula emphasizes harmonization rather than aggressive dispersal, with tonification outweighing dispersion. If treated as a consumptive disease (Lao Zhai), it would lead to a loss of vitality.
Yu Lian San is also very effective for this condition.
Baishao (1 liang), Chaihu (8 fen), Xiangfu (5 fen), Yujin (1 qian), Sheng Zaoren (1 qian), Fushen (2 qian), Bajitian (2 qian), Lianzi.

Some individuals experience nocturnal emission due to excessive mental exertion causing Heart restlessness. Symptoms include thirst, dry tongue, redness of the malar region, emission upon closing the eyes, multiple emissions per night, fatigue, and lethargy. While commonly attributed to Kidney deficiency, this is actually caused by Heart deficiency. The Heart prefers tranquility and dislikes overexertion. Overexertion agitates the Heart, causing fire to flare upward. This upward-flaring fire separates Water and Fire, preventing Heart Qi from descending to communicate with the Kidney, thereby opening the "gate" of the Kidney. Kidney Qi requires communication with Heart Qi to store essence and prevent leakage. Since the Heart cannot control the Kidney, essence inevitably leaks. Although the Heart desires the Kidney to store essence, it lacks the strength to do so. Therefore, treatment should not focus on the Kidney but on tonifying Heart deficiency, which will naturally stop nocturnal emission.
Formula: Jing Xin Tang (Calm Heart Decoction)
Renshen (3 qian), Baizhu (5 qian), Fushen (5 qian), Chao Zaoren, Shanyao (each 1 liang), Qianshi (1 liang), Gancao (5 fen), Danggui (3 qian), Bei Wuweizi (10 grains), Maidong (5 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally. Emission stops after two doses; after ten doses, it ceases permanently.
This formula greatly tonifies Heart Qi deficiency without clearing Heart fire. The fire arises from Heart overexertion, making it deficient fire rather than excess fire. Excess fire can be purged, but deficient fire should be tonified. People mistakenly treat it as excess fire with purging methods, which is why nocturnal emission persists.
Duan Yi Shen Dan is also effective for this condition.
Renshen (1 liang), Shanyao (5 qian), Qianshi (5 qian), Maidong (5 qian), Bei Wuweizi (1 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Some individuals indulge in sexual desire excessively, leading to uncontrollable nocturnal emission. Symptoms include weak waist and legs, deep bone soreness, night sweats with fever, and persistent dampness. While often attributed to Kidney fire, this is actually due to Kidney Yin depletion. When Kidney Water and Fire are balanced, prolonged intercourse does not result in emission. Nocturnal emission occurs due to imbalance between Water and Fire. Both deficiency of Fire with abundance of Water and excess of Fire with deficiency of Water can cause emission. The former is mild and responds slightly to warming Fire; the latter is severe and requires significant nourishment of Water. Fire is easier to replenish than Water. Treatment need not purge Fire but should tonify Kidney Water to restrain Fire.
Formula: Wang Shui Tang (Prosper Water Decoction)
Shu Dihuang (1 liang), Shashen (5 qian), Bei Wuweizi (1 qian), Shanyao (1 liang), Qianshi (1 liang), Fuling (5 qian), Digupi (3 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally. Four consecutive doses stop emission.
This formula purely tonifies essence without using astringents, as astringents worsen nocturnal emission. Tonifying essence allows Water to restrain Fire's movement; when Fire is still, essence remains contained. Astringents are unnecessary. Furthermore, diuretic herbs are used because in nocturnal emission, the essence orifice is open due to the closure of the urinary orifice. Fire blocks the urinary orifice, forcing fluid out through the essence orifice. Opening the urinary orifice closes the essence orifice. Using astringents might fail to close the essence orifice while blocking the urinary orifice, delaying cessation.
Shu Di Tian Jing Dan is also suitable.
Shu Dihuang (2 liang), Maidong, Shanyao, Qianshi (each 1 liang), Bei Wuweizi (1 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Anger injuring the Liver can cause sudden nocturnal emission that persists and worsens with stress. Symptoms include hypochondriac fullness, rising fire to head and eyes, poor appetite, fatigue, irritability, and distension. While attributed to Liver Qi stagnation, this is actually Liver Blood dryness. Fire within the Liver is stored by Blood; without Blood, it cannot be contained. Liver fire is Wood fire; lack of Water dries Wood, and lack of Blood dries the Liver. Extreme dryness prevents Liver fire from self-nourishing, causing it to escape between Heart and Kidney, wandering soul creating dreams, often erotic dreams due to Liver Qi deficiency. Treatment tonifies Liver Blood and slightly clears Fire, calming the soul and stopping emission.
Formula: Run Mu An Hun Tang (Moisten Wood Calm Soul Decoction)
Danggui (1 liang), Baishao (1 liang), Gan Juhua (3 qian), Bei Wuweizi (5 fen), Fuling (5 qian), Baizhu (5 qian), Chao Zhizi (1 qian), Jinyingzi (3 qian), Gancao (5 fen).
Decoct with water and take orally. Liver fire calms in two doses, Liver Blood strengthens in two more, and emission stops in two further doses. Ten additional doses prevent recurrence.
This formula incorporates purging within tonification and stopping within unblocking, returning the soul to the Liver and securing essence in the Kidney. Blind purging or astringing without tonification leaves the Liver without Blood nourishment, preventing soul return and perpetuating dreams and emission.
Shao Yao Run Zao Dan is also applicable.
Baishao, Shanyao (each 1 liang), Chao Zhizi (3 qian), Qianshi (1 liang).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Individuals with inherent Heart Qi deficiency may struggle with endurance but crave beauty, causing palpitations and nocturnal emission. Symptoms include impotence, easy erection and ejaculation, daily nocturnal emission, spontaneous emission without dreams, emotional reactivity to visual or auditory stimuli, yellow complexion, emaciation, spontaneous sweating, and night fever. While attributed to dual Heart-Kidney deficiency, this is actually excessive agitation of Pericardium Fire. The Pericardium acts as an assistant to the Heart Monarch. Strong Heart Qi keeps Pericardium in check; weak Heart Qi allows Pericardium to overact. Treatment must tonify Heart Qi and clear Pericardium Fire to stop emission.
Formula: Qiang Xin Tang (Strengthen Heart Decoction)
Renshen (1 liang), Fushen (5 qian), Danggui (5 qian), Maidong (3 qian), Bajitian (5 qian), Shanyao (5 qian), Qianshi (5 qian), Xuanshen (5 qian), Bei Wuweizi (5 fen), Lianzixin (3 fen).
Decoct with water and take orally. Four doses reduce nocturnal emission; four more reduce spontaneous emission. One month of use cures both; three months prevent recurrence.
Seven parts tonify the Heart, three parts clear the Pericardium. Pericardium hyperactivity stems from Heart Qi weakness. Tonifying the Heart strengthens it, naturally subduing the Pericardium. Adding Xuanshen and Lianxin clears Pericardium fire, balancing Monarch and Minister. Long-term administration is necessary as chronic weakness accumulates over time; gradual improvement cannot be expected overnight.
Lian Xin Qing Huo Tang is also effective.
Xuanshen, Shengdi (each 5 qian), Danshen (3 qian), Shanyao, Qianshi (each 1 liang), Lianzixin (2 qian), Maidong (1 liang), Bei Wuweizi (5 fen), Tiandong (1 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Excessive indulgence combined with mental labor and intercourse leads to persistent nocturnal emission. Symptoms include intense thirst with ineffective urination, insomnia, fearfulness, oral ulcers, cold soles, empty-feeling lower back, trembling legs, tidal fever, confusion, and spirit wandering. While attributed to Heart-Kidney deficiency, this is simultaneous activation of Fire in both meridians. Heart Fire is correct Fire, restrained by Kidney Water. Kidney Fire is deficient Fire, subdued by Heart Fire. Tranquil Heart Fire keeps Kidney Fire still. Kidney Fire moves due to Heart Fire weakness. Dual activation causes mutual reinforcement, unsustainable internally. Fire flares upward, winning and refusing to stop. One moving Fire hinders Water ascent; two moving Fires prevent Water descent. Maximum Fire ascent corresponds to minimum Water descent. Blocked Heart-Kidney Qi opens the Jade Gate uncontrollably. Rescue requires tonifying Heart and Kidney; sufficient Qi closes the gate.
Formula: Liang Yi Zhi Yi Tang (Dual Benefit Stop Emission Decoction)
Renshen (1 liang), Shu Dihuang (2 liang), Shanyao (1 liang), Qianshi (1 liang), Baizhu (1 liang), Sheng Zaoren (1 liang), Huanglian (5 fen), Rougui (5 fen).
Decoct with water and take orally. Emission stops in two doses; all symptoms resolve in two months.
This is a sacred formula for Heart-Kidney intersection. Intersection balances dual Fire, eliminating the need for specific astringents. Astringents with internal fire exacerbate heat.
Liang Ning Tang is also usable.
Shu Dihuang (2 liang), Maidong (2 liang), Huanglian (1 qian), Rougui (3 fen), Shanyao (1 liang), Qianshi (1 liang).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Intense scholarly study without sleep until midnight causes nocturnal emission. Later, contact with bedding triggers emission; otherwise, it does not. Symptoms include reduced appetite, fatigue, and lethargy. While attributed to excess Heart Fire, this is Kidney Fire following Heart Fire's rush. Heart Fire is easily agitated and hard to calm; humans rarely keep the mind still. Daily mental activity relies on nighttime sleep for Heart Blood to return to the Liver, allowing Kidney Water to nourish. Although Kidney Water primarily nourishes the Liver, when Heart Qi returns to the Liver, the Liver nourishes the Heart via Kidney support. Nourished Heart remains calm. Overexertion depletes Heart Blood; blood fails to return to Liver, causing fierce Fire. Seeing boiling Heart Fire, Kidney fails to interact. If Kidney reserves are depleted, Water source is deficient; deficiency increases Fire. Fire attracts Fire; Heart Fire enters Kidney via heat, residing in Lower Jiao, stirring the essence chamber, causing leakage. This indicates critical deficiency of righteous Qi.
Formula: Jue Meng Dan (Stop Dreams Pill)
Renshen (3 qian), Maidong (5 qian), Fushen (3 qian), Baizhu (3 qian), Shu Dihuang (1 liang), Qianshi (5 qian), Shanyao (5 qian), Bei Wuweizi (1 qian), Xuanshen (1 liang), Tusizi (3 qian), Danshen (3 qian), Danggui (3 qian), Lianzixin (3 qian), Chao Zaoren (3 qian), Chenpi (3 fen), Shashen (3 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally. Mild relief in ten doses; greater relief in twenty; cure in thirty.
This is a sacred formula for calming the Heart and a subtle formula for tonifying the Kidney, saving both simultaneously. Skeptics might expect cooling herbs for extreme fire, but fire arising from mental labor is deficient fire, not excess fire. Deficient fire is tonified, not purged. Greatly tonifying Heart and Kidney deficiency calms fire. Mistaking Monarch Fire for excess fire and using harsh cold herbs destroys vitality.
Yang Ru Tang is also excellent.
Shu Dihuang (1 liang), Jinyingzi, Qianshi, Shanyao, Xuanshen, Maidong (each 5 qian), Muli Mo (3 qian), Bei Wuweizi (5 fen).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Nighttime heat in the spine center causes nocturnal emission. While attributed to "He Che" (Placenta/Chong Mai) fire burning, this is actually Kidney Water depletion. The He Che path corresponds to the spinal vertebrae. The Kidney path running along the paravertebral muscles is both the path of Kidney Water and Kidney Fire. Mutual assistance ensures safety; mutual conflict causes blockage. Blockage results from lack of Water irrigation. Without Water connection, Fire flares upward causing heat, preventing spinal coolness. Fire flaring up necessitates Water flowing down. Treatment for upper Fire flare must first irrigate lower Water depletion. Sufficient Water extinguishes Fire, allowing Yellow River (Kidney Water) to flow upstream.
Formula: Wan Liu Tang (Turn Flow Decoction)
Shu Dihuang (2 liang), Shanyao (1 liang), Baizhu (1 liang), Zexie (3 qian), Xuanshen (1 liang), Bei Wuweizi (2 qian), Shanzhuyu (5 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally. Heat resolves in ten doses; emission ceases in twenty.
This formula consists purely of Water-tonifying herbs. Sour-astringent herbs are included for their ability to stop emission. Nocturnal emission worsens with simple astringents; why use sour-astringents? The He Che path favors sour-astringency; without it, Water does not flow upstream. Continuous emission creates downstream momentum; maximum downstream flow causes maximum upstream Fire counter-attack. Sour-astringents used amidst abundant fluids allow upstream flow, rescuing the central valley from burning. As Fire descends and Water rises, downward emission stops. Thus, spinal heat removal cuts off nocturnal emission.
Chong Ji Tang is also good.
Shanzhuyu, Shu Dihuang, Shanyao, Qianshi (each 1 liang), Bei Wuweizi (3 qian), Jinyingzi, Baizhu (each 3 qian).
