There are cases where a person develops scabies-like lesions all over the body, with thickened skin and sores that bleed like eczema or scabies. The symptoms may include pain or itching, dryness or dampness; it resembles insects but is not actually insects. People assume this is due to the retention of Damp-Heat (Shi Re) in the skin, but who would know that it is actually caused by Qi and Blood failing to circulate fully and nourish the body? In the world, many use decoctions of Sophora flavescens root (Kushen, 苦参) or external treatments with Angelica dahurica root (Baizhi, 白芷), etc., but ultimately achieve no effect. This is precisely due to the deficiency of Qi and Blood. When Qi and Blood are sufficient, there is no fear of meridian blockage; when Qi and Blood are vigorous, hair follicles do not suffer from dryness. Moreover, with sufficient Qi and abundant Blood, Heat dissipates and Dampness vanishes. How could stagnation occur, blocking flow and knotting outside the skin? Therefore, the method for treating scabies focuses primarily on tonifying Qi and Blood, assisted by herbs that eliminate Dampness and clear Heat. Even if the disease has persisted for ten years, efficacy can be achieved in a short time, let alone recent onset. The formula used is Sao Lai Dan (Scabies-Sweeping Elixir): Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄耆) 3 liang, Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis Radix) 2 liang, Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 2 qian, Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) 1 liang, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) 1 liang, Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Sheng Gancao, 生甘草) 3 qian, Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maidong, 麦冬) 1 liang, Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua, 金银花) 2 liang, Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药) 1 liang, Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎) 5 qian, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Di, 熟地) 1 liang, Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, 山萸) 5 qian, Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen, 元参) 1 liang, Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥) 3 qian, and Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen, 天花粉) 3 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, the skin color becomes moist; after another two doses, dryness resolves. Continuous administration for ten doses results in complete recovery. This formula greatly tonifies Qi and Blood, akin to a barren field suddenly receiving rain, becoming full of vitality, thus avoiding the desolation of dusty wastelands.
When a person’s legs suffer from official corporal punishment (caning), the skin and flesh rot, and stagnant blood remains unresolved, causing painful wailing. It seems appropriate to treat externally with plasters and powdered medicines. However, given the severity of the injury, if internal resolution is not prioritized and one relies solely on external treatment, the therapeutic effect remains superficial ("outside the membranes") and cannot protect the Heart, allowing evil blood to invade. Thus, internal treatment must not be delayed. Yet, worldly external formulas often appear miraculous, while internal ones rarely prove effective, leading patients to die from sudden mental agitation. Although those punished for crimes often accumulate evil deeds, are there no cases of unjust suffering? Resentful Qi stagnating in the Heart causes the Liver lobes to expand and Liver Qi to contract, particularly drawing blood into the Heart, causing innocent people to die prematurely. With no cure available, whose fault is this? I, Chen Shiduo, obtained a special transmission from an extraordinary person: upon receiving corporal punishment, decoct and take immediately, ensuring no danger to life. After taking the medicine, then apply external plasters and powders. Internal and external attacks combined will facilitate wound healing. The internal formula is named Wei Xin Xian Dan (Heart-Guarding Immortal Elixir): Rheum Palmatum Rhizome (Dahuang, 大黄) 3 qian, Dang Gui 1 liang, Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花) 3 qian, Persicae Semen (Taoren, 桃仁) 30 grains, Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi, 生地) 1 liang, Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 丹皮) 3 qian, Auricularia Judae (Mu'er, 木耳) 3 qian, and Sinapis Alba Seed (Baijiezi, 白芥子) 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. One dose disperses the evil blood; a second dose is unnecessary. Then apply a plaster. The plaster formula is named Hu Xin Xian Dan (Heart-Protecting Immortal Plaster): Dahuang 1 liang, Myrrha (Moyao, 没药) 3 qian, Olibanum (Ruxiang, 乳香) 3 qian, White Beeswax (Baila, 白蜡) 1 liang, Pine Rosin (Songxiang, 松香) 5 qian, Drynariae Rhizoma (Gusuibu, 骨碎补) 5 qian, Dang Gui 1 liang, Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Sanqi, 三七根) 3 qian, Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Baiguiban, 败龟板) 1 liang, and Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) 5 fen. Grind each into fine powder. Take 1 liang of porcine subcutaneous fat (Zhubanyou, 猪板油). Melt the Baila and Songxiang with the pig fat in a copper pot, then mix uniformly with the herbal powders to form the plaster. Apply to the injured area, wrap with oil paper, and bind with cloth. Mild cases heal with one plaster; severe cases require only two. For injuries from heavy clamping sticks, approximately four plasters suffice to allow safe walking. These two formulas are extremely divine and miraculous: the internal formula disperses all evil blood, and the external formula promotes rapid regeneration of dead tissue. Used together, how could they harm human life?
