There exists the supreme principle in the universe, which is difficult to grasp through eyes and ears. Whatever can be comprehended belongs to Yuanqi (Primordial Qi). Qi cannot move without Li (Principle), and Li cannot manifest without Qi. They merge into one unity; separated, they cannot exist independently. Flowing without obstruction, all things rely on it for life. Gold can be pierced and stones shaped; water and fire can coexist. Moving together without harming each other, this is the relationship between Li and Qi. Where life arises, the mechanism of death lies hidden; within death, the seed of life resides. Li functions through Qi, while Qi takes Li as its substance. From substance, function is revealed; from function, substance is sought. Neither substance nor function stands alone; if neither substance nor function is established, neither Li nor Qi is defined. One word reveals the secret of heaven. Taking a step forward at the top of a hundred-foot pole, there is no beginning before the origin. Only by understanding its meaning can one speak of Xi Sui (Marrow Washing).
Yuanqi has long been misty and dense, transforming into water, fire, and earth. Water originates from the peak of Kunlun, flowing forth and filling wells and pits. Sitting quietly generates warmth; within water, fire is contained. Dampness and heat then evaporate, becoming rain and dew. It generates humans and all living beings, benefiting the entire human world. Water, over time, clarifies into earth; fire is the warmth of Qi. The human body is a small universe, unmatched by any other thing. Possessing this illusory physical form, it is merely the remainder of Qi. Originally not belonging to me, upon dissolution, it returns to Taixu (Great Void). Birth was never truly born; death was never truly died. When will the physical frame remain? In old age, it returns to heaven and earth. Borrowing the false to reveal the true, transcending and leaving behind the mortal class. Comprehending the Xi Sui Jing (Marrow Washing Classic), longevity knows no end. Without the false, the true cannot be revealed; true and false are boundless and indistinguishable. One should view it thus: true and false are non-dual. The form composed of the Four Elements (Four Greats) is a temporary combination; who can distinguish this?
The ordinary person mistakes the false for true, adorning the body with fine clothes. Vainly pursuing the gaze of others, enjoying delicious food day after day. Everyone is like this, busy with a mundane life. Having no time to consider life and death, always led by fame and profit. Once Shenqi (Spirit and Qi) scatters, the oil runs out and the lamp extinguishes. The corpse is buried in the wilderness, the startled soul captured in a dream. Ten thousand sufferings and a thousand hardships, illusions ceaselessly rest. The sage alone recognizes the true, wearing coarse cloth and eating simple vegetables. Not greedy, maintaining oneself; how could one be burdened by body and mouth? Comprehending heaven and earth, realizing they are originally one with me. Though bodies vary in size, their agility is originally identical. Heaven and earth have the sun and moon; the human body possesses two eyes. Sun and moon have darkness and brightness; stars and lamps follow sequentially. Even if stars and lamps extinguish, the Nature of Seeing ultimately does not perish. Even if one becomes blind, reaching out, one touches the nose. The whole body is an eye; touching, one knows the object relies on touch. This is the spirituality of the Heart (Mind), encompassing heaven and earth. Seeing does not rely on eyes; hearing does not rely on ears. If the mind can be pure and clear, not forced by desires and lusts, one knows the original place and returns to the original destination. Ordinary people and sages alike have horizontal eyes and straight noses. Coming together but not returning together, because the former wander outward. If one can retrieve the wandering mind, focusing thoughts on life and death, taking advantage of this healthy body, exerting effort with diligence and mindfulness. Xi Sui returns to the original source; ordinary people and sages return to one.
