偈曰∶口中言少,心头事少,腹里食少,自然睡少。有此四少,长生可了。
All things are not separate from me, but form a single entity with me. The illusory forms that emerge all assist in sustaining life's vitality. Humans require objects to serve as clothing and food. Medicinal herbs and vessels, if any one is missing, the completeness is lacking; flying, diving creatures, and plants, all myriad species are utilized by humans. How immense is the grace of Creation! Wanton killing is violent and cruel. Mayflies and flies, born in the morning and dying at dusk; turtles, cranes, elk, and deer, eating little and absorbing Qi, manage to live for many years. Why do humans not compare favorably with these creatures? If one only covets clothing and food, one squanders the understanding of life and death. If one can cut off excessive desires and cravings, then "objects" and "self" will achieve unity.
Walking should be like a blind person without a cane, looking inward to illuminate one's nature. Lift the foot low and slowly; only step firmly before advancing further. Every step should be like this; always guard against hasty walking. On the worldly path, mistakes happen amidst busyness; slow steps ensure peace and safety. Standing should be like a horse facing a cliff, or like a boat reaching the shore. Turn your light back to shine inwardly; recognize the place where you firmly stand. Do not depart from the present thought; keep your mind focused, do not engage in external affairs. Knowing when to stop, know how to stop; pay attention to guarding the empty valley within. Stand firm without tilting; if the form is upright, the body naturally becomes solid. Ears and eyes quiet down with the heart, like still water and a bright mirror. Let matters come and go纷繁ly; the present moment is the ultimate truth.
Sitting should be heavy like a hill, sitting upright with solemn demeanor. Close the mouth and hide the tongue deeply; breath enters and exits through the nose. Each breath returns to the Yuan Sea (Lower Dantian); when Qi is sufficient, Spirit is naturally abundant. Penetrating bones and nourishing marrow, emerging from Spirit requires first entering Samadhi (meditative absorption). Lying down should be curved like a winnowing basket, left or right according to convenience. Knees often stagger; feet hook like claws. Hands remain on the abdomen, touching the navel and lower body. Testicles are rubbed occasionally, resembling the posture of a dragon playing with a pearl. When tired, sleep on the side; in sleep, one does not lose awareness. Only after waking extend the legs; lying on the back is also unrestricted. Dream and awakening are indistinguishable; nine years of practical verification transcend the pass of life and death, reaching the ultimate intent of Tathagata. The chapter on Walking, Standing, Sitting, and Lying contains only this true principle.
Once Yi Jin Gong (Muscle/Tendon Changing Exercise) is completed, a Diamond Body is formed. External pathogens cannot invade, and food and drink do not accumulate. Yet, fearing injury from the Seven Emotions, the Primordial Spirit may not hold itself. Although possessing the appearance of a Diamond body, it remains a flesh-and-blood frame. One must follow the Xi Sui Jing (Marrow Washing Scripture): eat less, absorb more clear Qi. Perform dry bathing (rubbing the skin), massage the eyes then the nose. Touch the face and rotate the ears; do not be bound by numbers. Keep eyes closed observing the tip of the nose; close the mouth allowing nasal breathing to flow freely. Numbers harmonize secretly; when the body settles, the Spirit settles. Wake up at Wugeng (early morning); exhale turbidity, inhale clear warmth. Open eyes and begin to stretch and resolve; do not greedily indulge in deep sleep. Sit cross-legged on thick cushions, loosely untie the waist belt. Right knee covers left knee; regulate breath with tongue touching the palate. Move the flanks and operate the Weilu (tailbone area); shake shoulders and push the belly with hands. Separate, combine, press, and lift; hold the Gu (firm grip) posture pressing both knees. Nasal breathing is continuous, flowing continuously into the Haidi (Huiyin point). Swallow saliva continuously, sending it to the abdomen with intention. Tap teeth and ring the heavenly drum; cover the navel with both hands. Extend feet to touch toes; breathe thirty-six times. After hand massage is complete, sit cross-legged for a long time. Straighten the body and stomp twice; Xi Sui Gong (Marrow Washing Exercise) is finished. Rise slowly; walk steadily before moving. Fearing errors in haste, slow walking is the fixed rule. Three years plus nine years; calm the mind and wash away thoughts. Penetrate bones and nourish marrow; shed grain and fly away. Gradually approach the state of merging with Heaven, reaching the final ultimate ground. Thus speaks the Gatha: Few words in the mouth, few matters in the heart, little food in the belly, naturally little sleep. With these four reductions, longevity can be achieved.
