Newborn infants rely entirely on proper nursing and care. All methods have been fully recorded in the "Initial Birth" section of this book. There is also a type of unforeseen mishap that occurs unexpectedly, not caused by improper care, which requires immediate emergency rescue. If it involves disease treatment, specialized pediatric physicians are responsible, so I will not elaborate further.
For newborns who do not move after birth, urgently examine the inside of the mouth. If there are blisters present, known as *Xuan Yong* (Hanging Abscess), they must be promptly ruptured with a finger. Wrap a finger in cotton, squeeze dry, and wipe away blood until clean. Once cleaned, the infant will survive; if blood enters the abdomen, it is incurable.
For newborns who do not cry upon birth, known as *Meng Sheng* (Dream-born/Unresponsive Newborn), this is likely due to difficult labor or exposure to cold. People at the time did not recognize this condition and often abandoned them without rescue, which is truly regrettable. One must urgently wrap the infant in cotton batting, hold the child close to the chest, and absolutely must not cut the umbilical cord. Instead, keep the placenta attached to the cord. Urgently ignite a piece of paper dipped in oil and apply it to the umbilical cord, moving it back and forth several times to warm it, until warmth penetrates from the navel into the abdomen. After a moment, vital energy returns, the body warms, and the infant naturally cries as usual. If the infant remains silent after warming, take a cat, wrap its head and feet in cloth, and have a woman bring the cat near the infant's ear. Bite the cat's ear sharply; the cat's sudden loud meow will startle the infant awake, causing it to cry and revive.
For newborns whose bowels and bladder are blocked, with severe abdominal distension, urgently instruct a woman to rinse her mouth with warm water first, then perform cupping-like suction on seven points: the anterior chest, posterior back, below the navel, and the palms and soles of both feet. Suck each point three to five times until the skin turns red. Bowel and bladder function will resume spontaneously after a short while.
For newborns presenting with this symptom, use two cun of scallion white (*Cong Bai*), split into four sections, and decoct strongly in milk in a clay pot. Administer orally for immediate effect.
For newborns developing white spots on the lips and gum roots, known as *Ma Ya* (Horse Teeth/Dental Epithelial Pearls), which prevent breastfeeding, delay leads to fatality. Urgently use a heated needle bound to a chopstick to pierce and remove the white spots; bleeding is desirable. Wipe the blood with white cotton. Apply a mixture of mint decoction and ground gold ink to the area. Withhold breastfeeding for one shichen (two hours), then feed. Reapply the mixture to cure.
