After the newborn infant opens its mouth, observe the area under the tongue. If *Chong She* (Reptile Tongue/Sublingual swelling) is found with a membrane, resembling a pomegranate seed. If the child cannot cry, quickly use fingernails or a needle to slightly pierce the lingual frenulum; life/function returns once blood flows. Take mulberry juice, mix with *Puhuang* (Cattail Pollen), and apply to the affected area. If bleeding is excessive, burn hair to ash, mix with pig fat, and apply.
For an infant with protruding umbilicus, use the originally severed umbilical cord and mugwort leaves (*Ai Ye*), burn them to ash, mix with oil and rouge, and apply for cure.
Use the bent end of a silver hairpin. From below the infant's heart to the navel, scrape gently several times. Observe if there are cyanotic veins in the chest, appearing as a single line descending and bifurcating. At the bifurcation point below the line, moxibustion with one piece of moxa the size of a mung bean should be performed for immediate cure.
Newborns have tender skin, essentially red flesh without epidermis. Quickly dust with dry rice flour. Stop once the epidermis forms. For any areas such as the axillae, leg creases, or antecubital fossae where redness and erosion without skin occur, the infant will likely cry frequently. Use only ash from burned cow dung (preserving its nature), ground into an extremely fine powder, and rub on the affected area for cure.
Grind *Zhusha* (Cinnabar) into powder, mix with water, and apply to five points: the center of the chest, both palms, and both soles. This leads to cure. For a fetus crying in the womb, take a piece of earth from a rat hole in an empty house for many years, and have the pregnant woman hold it in her mouth to stop the crying. If fetal nourishment is maintained month by month, these ailments can be avoided.
If a pregnant woman loses her voice, medication is not required. Upon delivery, simply taking *Baosheng Wan* (Life-Preserving Pill) and *Siwu Tang* (Four Substances Decoction) will restore speech. The *Neijing* states: "When a person is heavily pregnant for nine months and becomes aphonic, it is because the uterus collateral connects to the Kidney."
Various methods for observing and treating infant smallpox are detailed in medical texts and need not be repeated here. The most crucial aspect for smallpox care is cleanliness. If taboos are violated, mild cases become severe, and severe cases become critical, which is deeply worrying. Therefore, they are listed here. Those who protect and nurture infants must keep this in mind.
