The Five Movements (Wu Yun, the movement of the five phases) allow one to discern the correct commands of Cold, Heat, Warmth, and Coolness; the Six Qi (Liu Qi, wind, heat, fire, dampness, dryness, cold) require examination of their superimposition upon the main qi, indicating excess, deficiency, or peace. If the Six Qi arrive in great force, they all transform into pathogenic factors; if the Five Movements lose harmony, disasters and diseases arise. When the movements are either weak or excessive and arrive suddenly out of season, one must observe which seasonal qi transformation they coincide with. Furthermore, if this coincides with a year of deficiency (weak annual movement) and a month of emptiness (waning moon), resulting in a double exposure to pathogens, the syndrome will be severe.
[Note] "Movement" refers to the Five Movements, governing the four seasons. In heaven, they manifest as the correct commands of Cold, Heat, Warmth, and Coolness; on earth, as the correct transformations of Growth, Flourishing, Harvesting, and Storage. "Qi" refers to the Six Qi, governing the six steps (periods) of the year. Regarding the Main Qi, there are fixed normal conditions of Wind, Heat, Fire, Dampness, Dryness, and Cold. Regarding the Guest Qi, there are different responses of excess, deficiency, and peace when the Six Qi superimpose upon the Main Qi. Whenever the arrival of the Five Movements and Six Qi is timely, without weakness or excess, and harmonious, it is called Ping Qi (Normal/Peaceful Qi). Even if timely, if the Six Qi arrive in great force, or the Five Movements are weak or excessive, or appear out of season, or arrive suddenly, these are all Qi of pathological transformation, disharmony, and imbalance, which harm things and cause disease. One must only observe which seasonal Qi transformation coincides with the pathology, and then deliberate the appropriate treatment. If illness occurs under these conditions, and further coincides with a year of deficiency and a month of emptiness, leading to a double exposure to pathogens, the syndrome will inevitably be heavy and not mild.
Wood is named Fu He (Spreading Harmony), Fire is named Sheng Ming (Ascending Brightness), Earth is named Bei Hua (Complete Transformation), Metal is named Shen Ping (Judging Peace), and Water is named Jing Shun (Quiet Compliance); these are all Ping Yun (Normal Movements). The Excess Wood Movement is named Fa Sheng (Initiating Growth), Fire is named He Xi (Blazing Radiance), Earth is named Dun Fu (Mound-like Abundance), Water is named Liu Yan (Overflowing Flow), and Metal is named Jian Cheng (Firm Completion); the Deficient Wood Movement is named Wei He (Withered Harmony), Fire is named Fu Ming (Hidden Brightness), Earth is named Bei Jian (Low Supervision), Metal is named Cong Ge (Following Change), and Water is named He Liu (Dried-up Stream).
[Note] Excess that is suppressed, or deficiency that is assisted, are both called Ping Yun (Normal Movement). Wood is named Fu He, spreading harmonious Qi to generate all things. Fire is named Sheng Ming, its nature ascending, its virtue bright. Earth is named Bei Hua, the mother of all things, transforming everything. Metal is named Shen Ping, judging and maintaining peace, not executing wrongful punishment. Water is named Jing Shun, its body quiet and nature compliant, preferring calm waters. Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren Yang years are all called Movements of Excess. Wood is named Fa Sheng, Wood Qi being surplus, initiating growth vigorously; Fire is named He Xi, hot summer applying transformation, sunlight abundant; Earth is named Dun Fu, thick and high mounds, Earth Qi particularly abundant; Metal is named Jian Cheng, firm thus completing things, Metal Qi being surplus; Water is named Liu Yan, Water Qi excessive, flowing and overflowing. Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui Yin years are all called Movements of Deficiency. Wood is named Wei He, harmonious Qi weak, initiation of growth scarce; Fire is named Fu Ming, Fire virtue not manifest, brightness hidden; Earth is named Bei Jian, Earth Qi deficient, transformation low and supervised; Metal is named Cong Ge, Metal Qi deficient, following Fire in change; Water is named He Liu, Water Qi deficient, its stream dried up.
