In the years of Zi and Wu, Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire) governs the Heaven sector, and Yangming Zaojin (Dryness and Metal) governs the Earth sector. In the years of Chou and Wei, Taiyin Shitu (Dampness and Earth) and Taiyang Hanshui (Cold and Water) preside; in the years of Yin and Shen, Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) and Jueyin Fengmu (Wind and Wood) are linked. The situation in the years of Mao and You is reversed compared to that of Zi and Wu, and the same applies to Chen and Xu, as well as Si and Hai. Each year, the four interstitial Qi (Jianqi) of the Heaven and Earth sectors are divided between the upper and lower halves, each governing half a year.
[Note] Heavenly Stems initiate the Yun (Five Phases movement), and Earthly Branches initiate the Qi (Six Qi movement). This passage discusses the Zhenghua (Direct Transformation) and Duihua (Opposite Transformation) of Yin and Yang on Earth, along with the six positions of Keqi (Adventitious Qi) superimposed upon the Zhuqi (Primary Qi). For instance, in the years of Zi and Wu, Shaoyin Junhuo presides, which is designated as Sizhi (Governing Heaven). Yangming Zaojin is located below, designated as Zaiquan (Governing Earth). Qi ascends from below to above; therefore, calculation begins with Yangming below. Yangming belongs to Er-yang (Two Yangs); Er-yang generates San-yang (Three Yangs), and among San-yang, Taiyang represents the First Adventitious Qi, which corresponds to the Left Interstitial Qi of the Earth. When San-yang reaches its extreme, it generates Yi-yin (One Yin), which is Jueyin; thus, Jueyin constitutes the Second Adventitious Qi, corresponding to the Right Interstitial Qi of Heaven. Yi-yin generates Er-yin (Two Yins), which is Shaoyin; thus, Shaoyin constitutes the Third Adventitious Qi, which is the Sizhi Qi. Er-yin generates San-yin (Three Yins), which is Taiyin; thus, Taiyin constitutes the Fourth Adventitious Qi, corresponding to the Left Interstitial Qi of Heaven. When San-yin reaches its extreme, it generates Yi-yang (One Yang), which is Shaoyang; thus, Shaoyang constitutes the Fifth Adventitious Qi, corresponding to the Right Interstitial Qi of Earth. Yi-yang generates Er-yang (Two Yangs), which is Yangming; thus, Yangming constitutes the Sixth Adventitious Qi, which is the Zaiquan Qi. The calculation for the years of Chou, Wei, Yin, and Shen follows this method. However, the years of Mao and You are reversed relative to Zi and Wu; Chen and Xu are reversed relative to Chou and Wei; Si and Hai are reversed relative to Yin and Shen. This means: in the years of Mao and You, Yangming Zaojin governs Heaven and Shaoyin Junhuo governs Earth; in the years of Chen and Xu, Taiyang Hanshui governs Heaven and Taiyin Shitu governs Earth; in the years of Si and Hai, Jueyin Fengmu governs Heaven and Shaoyang Xianghuo governs Earth; they mutually exchange positions. The four interstitial Qi surrounding Sizhi and Zaiquan each year refer to the Six Qi dividing the upper and lower realms: the Sizhi Qi governs the first half of the year, and the Zaiquan Qi governs the second half of the year.
