(From *Shengji Zonglu*) Treats *jia* (masses), abdominal accumulations with pain, hard and constipated stools, or occasional passage of stool.
Binglang (Arecae Semen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, each 2 liang, stir-fried with bran), Taoren (Persicae Semen, peeled and removed of tips, stir-fried with bran), Damaren (Cannabis Fructus), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, each 1 liang). Made into honey pills.
The Binglang Wan in *Shengji Zonglu* treats *jia*. (*Suwen: Qi Jue Lun* states: "Heat transferring from the Small Intestine to the Large Intestine forms *jia*.") The pain from abdominal *jia* fluctuates between wide and narrow intervals. Heat binding in the Large Intestine causes stools to be hard at times; the hidden *jia* is like a flaw. "The Large Intestine is the official organ of transmission; heat causes qi stagnation and fluid consumption, leading to abdominal pain and difficult defecation, yet sometimes it passes freely. Thus, although there is a form in the abdomen, it gathers and scatters irregularly, which is called *jia*. 'Fu' means hidden." 'Jia' shares the character with 'Xia' (flaw); women often suffer from this.) To moisten the intestines and drain heat, one must unblock the deep pathways; the amounts of Dahuang and Zhike are not fixed. Combined with Muxiang, Taoren, and Damaren, (Binglang, Muxiang, and Zhike vent the qi of the Large Intestine; Dahuang, Taoren, and Mahuang moisten and descend the heat of the Large Intestine, sharing the same principle as the Run Chang Tang and Tong You Tang formulas.) They promote the free flow of the fu organs and purge the lower jiao. (For diseases located in the fu organs, promote and unblock them; for diseases in the lower part, purge them according to their nature.)
(Zhang Zihe, *Rumen Shishen*) Treats stagnation in the chest and abdomen, distension and fullness with knotted pain, obstruction of both urination and defecation, or diarrhea and dysentery with tenesmus, and excess accumulation from food malaria.
Muxiang, Binglang, Ezhu, Chenpi, Qingpi, Huangbai (each 1 liang), Huanglian, Dahuang (each 3 liang), Xiangfu, Heiqianni (each 4 liang). Pulverized into fine powder, made into water pills the size of small beans. Take 30 pills per dose after meals, washed down with ginger decoction. (Another prescription includes Sanleng and Zhike, made into water pills with Mangxiao.)
Mu Xiang Bing Lang Wan contains Qing Pi and Chen Pi, San Huang (Huang Lian, Huang Bai, Da Huang), E Zhu, Xiang Fu, and Qian Niu. It can push away all kinds of excess accumulations and is suitable for treating dysentery and food malaria.
(This is an empirical formula by Zhang Zihe, excellent at pushing out the old to generate the new, breaking knots and dissipating accumulations. For adults with food stagnation, malaria, dysentery, jaundice, and swelling, and for children with fright, malnutrition, and accumulated heat, it can be taken as appropriate. Muxiang, Xiangfu, Qingpi, and Chenpi regulate qi and broaden the intestines, while Qian Niu and Binglang descend qi especially quickly; when qi moves, there will be no worry of distension, fullness, or tenesmus. Huanglian and Huangbai dry dampness and clear heat, Ezhu promotes qi circulation and breaks blood stasis, Mangxiao and Dahuang remove latent heat from the blood; these are all harsh agents for pushing hard accumulations. Once damp-heat and stagnation are removed, urination and defecation will normalize, and the Triple Burner will be smooth and unobstructed. Generally, if old filth is not cleared, the clear yang cannot rise; thus, one must rely on these to push it away. This is also the method of 'treating obstruction with draining methods' [Tong Yin Tong Yong].)
