Danggui Shengyang Rou Tang (Angelica, Ginger, and Mutton Decoction) is a remedy for postpartum abdominal pain and Ru Lao (postpartum consumptive disease). ("Ru" refers to the straw mat used during childbirth. Postpartum fever, spontaneous sweating, and body pain occurring due to illness contracted during confinement are named thus.)
(Wang Jinsan in *Gu Fang Xuan Zhu* states: "Cold hernia is caused by deep cold in the lower jiao, resulting from yin deficiency. Yin deficiency means one cannot use acrid-hot and drying drugs that severely deplete yin. Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing established a new method using Danggui and Yangrou. Their acrid-sweet nature and heavy/turbid quality warm the lower yuan without injuring yin. Assisted by five liang of Shengjiang and one jin of Yangrou—substances with blood and flesh affinity—they guide the medicine into the lower jiao to warm and disperse frozen cold. If pain is severe with vomiting, add Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae and Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae to stabilize middle qi and resist cold rebellion. This three-ingredient formula not only treats hernia qi rebelling upward but is also an excellent agent for postpartum lower jiao deficiency-cold.") There is also a version with added Renshen, (named Danggui Yangrou Tang), which is effective for Ru Lao accompanied by body pain and excessive sweating. (Body pain and excessive sweating indicate exterior qi deficiency, so Renshen is added to tonify qi simultaneously.) The Yangrou Tang in *Qianjin Fang* combined with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), plus Guizhi, Shengjiang, and Gancao, treats the same syndrome.
(Han Zhihe's *Shanghan Weizhi Lun*) Treats complications from excessive sweating or purgation in Shanghan (Cold Damage), leading to loss of yang and bleeding, aversion to people, curling up while lying, tremors resembling malaria, and collapse due to excessive blood loss in postpartum women.
