Treats the aforementioned syndrome accompanied by vomiting; also treats Gallbladder Cough (Dan Ke), characterized by coughing and vomiting bitter fluid resembling bile juice.
To the original formula of Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction), add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) half sheng, and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) three liang, with the remaining preparation method being the same.
Huangqin Tang uses Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), cooked with Zao (Jujubae Fructus) for combined disease of Taiyang and Yangming presenting with diarrhea. (Note: Why are herbs from both the Taiyin and Shaoyang meridians not used for the combined disease of these two yang channels? Because combining bitter herbs drains the heat of Shaoyang, while the sour-sweet nature of Shaoyao and Zao harmonizes the Qi of Taiyin, clearing the interior-half so that the exterior-half resolves spontaneously. The method of harmonizing is not limited to one approach. Combined disease refers to having symptoms of Taiyang such as headache and stiffness of the head and neck, spine, alongside symptoms of Shaoyang such as deafness, hypochondriac pain, bitter taste in the mouth, and alternating chills and fever. The pathogen lies at the half-exterior and half-interior, making sweating and purging inappropriate; thus, Huangqin Tang is given to harmonize the pathogen at the half-exterior and half-interior.) This formula subsequently became the ancestral formula for treating Dysentery (Li). (Li refers to diarrhea; Li [dysentery] refers to tenesmus/stagnant discharge.) Later generations added ingredients or renamed it. (Liu Wansu's Huangqin Shaoyao Tang and Shaoyao Tang were both derived from this formula, becoming the ancestral formula for treating dysentery for all generations.) Adding further Shengjiang and Banxia (named Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang / Scutellaria Decoction plus Pinellia and Fresh Ginger) can calm diarrhea accompanied by vomiting. (Diarrhea treatment focuses specifically on relieving diarrhea without mixing in wind-cold exterior-resolving herbs, reflecting the principle of urgently saving the interior. If vomiting occurs, anti-emetic herbs are added concurrently; treating according to the manifested signs was the standard practice of the ancients. If the primary symptoms resolve after taking the medicine but other symptoms appear subsequently, treatment should still be adjusted according to the new manifestations, which can be inferred.) It also treats Gallbladder Cough with vomiting of bitter juice. (Stomach Qi rebelling upward causes vomiting; heat in the Gallbladder causes bitterness.) The method of bitter-draining and pungent-unblocking is most exquisite. (Sour and bitter drain heat; pungent and sweet harmonize the Stomach. When Stomach Qi is harmonized and Gallbladder heat is cleared, coughing and vomiting of bitter fluid cease naturally.)
(Liu Wansu, *Suwen Bingji Qiyi Baoming Ji*) Treats hot dysentery with abdominal pain and tenesmus, body fever, thick and sticky pus and blood, and a surging and rapid pulse.
