(Liu Wansu's *Suwen Bingji Qi Yi Baoming Ji*) Treats watery diarrhea caused by Spleen dampness, accompanied by a heavy body and fatigue.
Shaoyao (Peony Root), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (5 qian). Decoct in water, take warm.
Huangqin Shaoyao Tang (Coptis and Peony Decoction) treats heat dysentery (dysentery caused by damp-heat accumulation in the Large Intestine) and epistaxis (nosebleed) caused by flaming fire rising upward. (Heat dysentery and epistaxis indicate extreme excess of Fire in the Yangming channel. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) is yellow, making it specifically effective for clearing Heat from the Yangming Stomach and Intestines. Baishao (White Peony Root) specifically nourishes Yin; Chishao (Red Peony Root) also harmonizes Ying Blood. Therefore, for heat dysentery with tenesmus, using Chishao is superior.) Dysentery with abdominal pain belongs to Taiyin disease, requiring the mandatory use of Shaoyao (here referring to Baishao) and Gancao. If Baizhu replaces Huangqin (this formula is named Baizhu Shaoyao Tang), it is taken for Spleen dampness causing watery diarrhea and heaviness of the body. (Liu Wansu in *Suwen Bingji Qi Yi Baoming Ji* states: "All chronic dysentery that does not stop or sudden severe diarrhea are diseases of the Taiyin, so one cannot depart from Shaoyao. If one does not receive Dampness, one cannot suffer from dysentery, so Baizhu must be used." He further states: "For dysentery occurring in any season, within the context of Shaoyao and Baizhu, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) in Spring,"
(Liu Wansu's Formula) Treats dysentery with pus and blood, thick and sticky, with abdominal pain and tenesmus.
Shaoyao (1 liang), Dangguiwei (Tail of Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 5 qian), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) (each 2 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) [dosage omitted in original].
(Liu Wansu's Formula) Treats the above symptoms accompanied by thirst.
In Shaoyao Tang, remove Guizhi and Gancao, add Zhike (Aurantii Fructus).
In Shaoyao Tang, Shaoyao serves as the Jun (Emperor) herb (heavy use of Shaoyao to drain Liver Wood and soothe Spleen Earth); Muxiang, Huanglian, Huangqin, Gancao, and Guizhi serve as Chen/Zuo (Minister/Assistant) herbs (Dahuang is known as the "General"); Binglang and other herbs move Qi and guide stagnation out, eliminating accumulations, allowing Qi mechanism to circulate freely. Huanglian clears Heat and dries Dampness, Danggui and Ejiao... [text breaks off, implying harmonizing Ying and Wei/Blood].
(Jiang Tikgan's Formula) Treats all types of dysentery, whether red, white, or mixed red and white, as well as tenesmus, abdominal pain, and jin kou li (anorexia due to severe abdominal pain). It is suitable for all such cases.
Huangqin, Baishao, Danggui, Binglang, Zhike, Chao Qingpi (Stir-fried Aurantii Fructus), Chao Houpo (Stir-fried Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (each 1 qian), Wei Muxiang (Baked Aucklandiae Radix) (5 fen), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) (3 fen).
Dongfeng San (East Wind Powder) ("East wind is gentle and promotes the growth of all things. This formula is mild yet has the effect of reviving the dying, hence its name.") Consists of Shaoyao, Gancao, and Qingpi.
Shaoyao should be baked/prepared.
