(Note) According to the original note: Loss of blood leads to dryness, dryness leads to hyperactive fire, causing the Lung to become extremely withered. If one wishes to nourish Kidney Water from its source without first nourishing the mother of Water (i.e., Metal/Lung), is this logical? However, the Lung is an organ abundant in Qi and deficient in Blood, so all blood-nourishing herbs are generally not desired. Instead, sheep lung is used as the principal herb, assisted by other moistening substances, which is within everyone's capability. The sweet and cool nature of true powder (starch/flour), however, not only clears and moistens Lung Metal but also strengthens Spleen Earth, a fact unknown to many. I consider this the main formula for treating "Upper Consumption" (Lung deficiency). For flaccidity syndrome caused by Lung heat and scorched leaves, and for upper Xiao (polydipsia) where drinking does not quench thirst, one can imitate this method. Master Fuku was a sage in treating consumption; thus, Ye Tianshi respected his methods in treating hemoptysis and other syndromes. Regrettably, later practitioners mostly started from *Yi Guan*, failing to distinguish between Upper and Lower Consumption, knowing only formulas like Liuwei Dihuang Wan and Bawei Dihuang Wan, hence their ineffectiveness. The Ge family formulas currently circulated contain only one famous recipe, Baifeng Gao, which is too superficial!
Xieli Shiquan Gao (Perfect Harmony Ten-Ingredient Paste): Balances and tonifies Yin and Yang, harmonizes Qi and Blood.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (each 3 liang, honey-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (6 liang), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (8 liang), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Corpus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang, honey-fried).
The above eight ingredients are decocted into a paste. Near completion, add Lujiaojiao (Cervi Cornus Colla) 4 liang and Guibanjiao (Testudinis Carapacis et Plastrum Colla) 3 liang to finish. Store in porcelain jars and bury underground to remove "fire qi." Take several qian mixed with boiled water each time.
(Note) This is a formula by Mr. Yipiao. Its theory states: In ancient times, for formless fatigue, one must tonify with sweet-warm herbs. Renshen is the Sovereign, Baizhu is the Minister, Huangqi is the Assistant, and Gancao is the Envoy. For tangible fatigue, one must assist with pungent-warm herbs, such as Danggui and Chuanxiong. Acid-sweet herbs, such as Baishao and Shudi, provide nourishment. Thus, these eight ingredients form the core, driven by blood-and-flesh sentient substances. Deer, being active, can unblock the Du Meridian, traverse dangers without fatigue, and its horns carry Yang upward, embodying firm and vigorous function. Turtle, being quiet, can unblock the Ren Meridian, hides and consolidates, embraces Yin and supports Yang, and its belly belongs to Yin descending, embodying soft and compliant constitution. These two collas each possess a specific virtue; herbal power is weak, relying on them to make efficacy miraculous. Those with dual deficiency of Yin and Yang taking it will have no excess or insufficiency. One may add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) to facilitate the pivot mechanism; truly a kingly formula. All formulas cultivating Yuan Qi should be simple and pure. Simplicity allows Zang-Fu organs to accept it easily and Qi-Blood to circulate smoothly; purity ensures mild and balanced properties, correcting deviations and saving deficiencies, allowing natural mutual infusion and endless circulation, generating life continuously, conforming to the innate flow. Any forced manipulation deviates from natural principles. Human spirit essentially lies in Yin and Yang, which in turn lie in firm-vigorous and soft-compliant qualities, interdependent and cyclical, not diverging. Thus, formless movement is the nature of Yang, i.e., the principle of Yang; tangible stillness is the nature of Yin, i.e., the principle of Yin. Expansion is Yang, relaxation is Yin. Yang is firm, vigorous, and central; Yin is soft, smooth, and correct. Daoist texts state reverence overcomes laziness, known to all. Yet Qi-Blood and energy change with time. Long-term labor of Yang causes Yang to descend into Yin; long-term damage to Yin causes Yin to lack strength to support Yang. One must use firm-vigorous-central to act upon Yin, and soft-smooth-correct to serve Yang. Then Yin and Yang Qi, having no body or boundary, neither labored nor damaged, naturally result in clarity in the body.
Luzhu Dan (Dewdrop Pill): Treats exhaustion from excessive thinking and mental labor, rising fire, palpitations, fright, insomnia, and forgetfulness.
Ingredients: Touming Chensha (Transparent Cinnabaris, 1 liang, soaked in jade vessel dew for 49 nights, excluding rainy days, ground to extreme fineness); Xiniuhuang (Bovis Calculus, 1 qian, ground fine).
Grind the above two ingredients evenly, refine white honey, and make pills the size of pea grains. Before writing or working, or before sleep, hold one pill in the mouth to dissolve.
Zhengcheng Dan (Sincere Integrity Pill): Treats the same conditions as above.
Ingredients: Touming Chensha (ground to extreme fineness; for every 1 liang of cinnabar, decoct 1 liang of Gancao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] in water, levigate, remove sediment, dry, grind again, levigate again, repeat three times); Zhu Xin Zhong Xue (Blood from pig heart, squeezed through silk to remove dregs; for every 1 liang of cinnabar, use blood from three hearts, one at a time, mix with cinnabar, dry, grind again, mix again, dry three times, then grind to extreme fineness).
Mix with rice paste, pound ten thousand times, make pills weighing 7 fen each, dry in shade to 5 fen, store tightly in porcelain bottles. Administration as above.
Shenxiao San (Divine Efficacy Powder): Treats Ge Xiao (Diaphragm Xiao / Upper Xiao).
Ingredients: Baifushi (Pumex), Sheng Gafen (Raw Concha Meretricis), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum).
Grind the above three ingredients to fine powder. Take 3 qian each time, mixed with juice from 7 crucian carp gallbladders.
(Note) Mr. JinSan said: Heart and Lung reside above the diaphragm. Heat pathogen shifts to Lung, robbing true fluids, forming Ge Xiao syndrome, blazing like a prairie fire. Hence thirst arises, seeking water, drinking like a whale sucking a river. Although replenishing water and lowering fire, it may still be insufficient. The brilliance lies in immediately using salty-cold substances from water, following its desire to treat it. Thus, Zhang Zhongjing used Wenli San, and Jiegu Laoren used Huashui Dan with Gafen, both sharing this meaning. This formula advances further: Baofushi, Gafen, and crucian carp gallbladder use salty to overcome bitter, and bitter to overcome pungent. Pungent is the flavor of Lung. Assisted by Chantui, light and floating ascending, leading the three directly to Lung Meridian to resolve heat and thirst. Moreover, the salinity of Baofushi and Gafen is mild and harmless, not only stopping thirst but also promoting urination, avoiding water accumulation complications. Often, overuse of cold-heat herbs eliminates fire but fails to transform water, resulting in fullness and swelling. I deeply admire Scholar Xu’s heavenly insight and retrospective wisdom here.
Taiyi Zijin Dan (Supreme Ultimate Purple Gold Pill)
Ingredients: Shancigu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), Chuanwenha (Clam Shell, 2 liang each); Hongya Daji (Euphorbiae Humifusae Radix), Baitanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum), Anshixiang (Styrax), Suheyou (Liquidambaris Resina) (each 1.5 liang); Qianjin Shuang (1 liang); Xionghuang (Realgar, levigated), Hupo (Electrum) (each 5 qian); Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), Dangmenzi (Moschus) (each 3 qian).
Grind all eleven ingredients to extreme fineness, mix evenly, knead with thick rice drink into pills the size of mung beans, coat with levigated Chensha.
(Note) Treats damp-warmth and epidemic pestilence pathogens, diffuse steaming, confusion of spirit, cholera vomiting/diarrhea, sand distension abdominal pain, maladaptation to local environment, mountain miasma evil invasion, etc., and resolves various toxins. Mr. Xue Yipiao said: Compared to Suhewan, it lacks heat; compared to Zhibao Dan, it is not cold; it combines the detoxifying effect of Taiyi Dan and the opening/closing function of both, truly a celestial product for saving lives, a superior medicine among hundreds of artisans.
(Commentary) Current Taiyi Dan in circulation has complex ingredients, gathering drying-heat herbs. It suits only those who endure wind and dew, eating coarse food, suffering from cold-dampness. General application misleads people significantly.
Shenxiang Bazhen Gao (Ginseng and Fragrant Eight-Treasure Paste)
Ingredients: Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, remove head/tail, wine-wash, steam), Sizhi Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma prepared four ways) (each 4 liang); Shudi, Zhi Huangqi, Baishao (wine-fry), Zhengshu Baizhu, Bai Guishen (wine-fry), Fuling (Poria) (each 3 liang).
Decoct the above eight ingredients into paste. Take 3 qian mixed with boiled water.
(Note) Mr. Yipiao said: This is the premier formula for gynecological regulation. Mild in flavor and property, functions match, travels through Zang-Fu, infuses vessels, safe for long-term use by the weak. My analysis: Qi belongs to Yang, desiring firmness; Blood belongs to Yin, desiring compliance. Women often have stagnation, so Qi movement is unvigorous. Thus, remove Gancao’s sweetness/slowness, add Xiangfu to guide flow, add Baizhu to promote transformation. Stagnation generates heat, so Blood movement is unsmooth. Remove Chuanxiong’s warmth/piercing, add Danshen to harmonize the three and nourish. Huangqi combined with Danggui and Baishao boosts blood more sensitively than Renshen. Choosing this over that benefits both rich and poor.
Jinfeng Xianzhu (Golden Phoenix Holding Pearl): Treats various deficiency-cold diseases in women, leading to infertility.
Ingredients: Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus) (4 qian); Mudingxiang (Cardamomi Semen), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma), Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Muli (Concha Ostreae), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (each 3 qian); Shexiang (Moschus) (a little).
Grind all thirteen ingredients finely, mix, make pills with raw honey the size of a cherry. Insert one pill into the Yumen (vagina).
(Note) Treats wide/wet Yumen, deficiency-cold leukorrhea, dysmenorrhea, delayed/light menstruation, and male impotence, seminal emission, cold sperm. Men and women suffer silently, leading to divorce or tragedy, unaware of medicinal treatment. Recording this implies deep intent.
Jixiang Wan (Auspicious Pill): Treats women with blood-cold and Qi stagnation, unable to conceive.
Ingredients: Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, roasted), Chuanxiong, Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Taohua (Peach Blossom), Liuxu (Willow Catkin), Baizhu, Shudi, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, pitted), Fuling (each 1 liang); Tusizi, Fupenzi (Rubiae Semen), Chushizi (Broussonetiae Fructus) (each 1 sheng); Taoren (Persicae Semen) (100 grains).
Grind fourteen ingredients to powder, make honey pills bean-sized. Take 5 pills on an empty stomach with vinegar, three times daily.
(Note) Mr. JinSan said: "Auspicious" refers to dreaming of bears/tigers in the Book of Songs, an omen for men. Women with blood stasis in the uterus or cold congealing in the womb cause Ren Meridian disharmony, preventing conception. Ancients used Dangbao Tang and Qin Gui Wan, but frail women cannot withstand harsh herbs. Here, Tianma is Sovereign because it grows underground, connects to stems, descends to Blood Sea, treating blood closure infertility. Dongyuan said Liver deficiency in women suits Tianma and Chuanxiong. Guixin is Minister, unblocking uterus/breaking stasis; Taoren and Danpi tonify Liver/nourish Blood; Peach blossom and willow catkin are light/floating, moving downward, dispelling filth, stimulating spring passion. Baizhu and Dihuang are Assistants, tonifying Spleen/Kidney righteous Qi. Tusizi, Fupenzi, Wuweizi are spreading/multi-seed herbs; Fuling enters Yang/unblocks Qi, Chushizi enters Yin/unblocks Spirit. During intercourse, Essence-Qi-Spirit merge, naturally conceiving. Excellent design, frequent efficacy.
(Correction) Both treat deficiency-cold infertility, one external, one internal (small dose). Why? Danxi argued: Yang seed requires Yin blood to capture; seed forms fetus, blood forms placenta. Infertility usually stems from insufficient blood to capture seed. Must tonify Yin blood, not use hot herbs to boil viscera. Boiling causes purple/black menses, decline, bitterness, dryness, disease, preventing conception. Even if born, infants die young due to Yin depletion. Many women have blood deficiency/internal heat; even Jiao’ai Tang is risky as Aiye is hot. External/small dose methods have deep meaning; stop when illness is cured.
(Commentary) Chen stated six male infertility causes: cold sperm, weak Qi, phlegm, ministerial fire, scant sperm, Qi stagnation. Ten female causes: cold uterus, cold spleen/stomach, tight Dai Meridian, Liver Qi stagnation, phlegm Qi, ministerial fire, Kidney water deficiency, Ren/Du disease, Bladder Qi failure, Qi/Blood imbalance capturing seed. Cold sperm/uterus is just one aspect. Yu said men shouldn't just take yang-tonics. Should women take pungent-hot herbs? Only for confirmed deficiency-cold. Sun Simiao’s five-pill dose is prudent. Later Shenyao Wan’s seven pills get the point. Xiong adds: even without disease, mismatched emotions prevent conception. These formulas heal and harmonize emotions, why my grandfather recorded them: for family harmony and lineage continuation. Profound words!
Anta Yinzi (Fetus-Anchoring Decoction): Take from 2 months to 6 months pregnancy to prevent miscarriage.
Ingredients: Hong Lianzi (Red Lotus Seed, crushed), Taizhou Qingzhu (Green Ramie Stem, washed), Bainmi (White Glutinous Rice) (each 3 qian).
Decoct in one zhong water until half remains. Take every morning.
(Note) Mr. JinSan said: Half-miscarriage results from sexual exhaustion damaging Foot Three Yin meridians. Kidney damage fixes essence poorly; Liver damage causes wild blood heat; Spleen damage drops fetal origin. Red lotus clears sovereign/minister fire, secures true Qi; green ramie promotes urination/unblocks uterus, clears lust stasis-heat; glutinous rice tonifies Spleen Yin, fills Yangming cavities, calms Liver Qi, settles fetal Qi. Grain/fruit formula is truly kingly.
Dangbao Wan (Uterus-Cleansing Pill): For repeated miscarriages, take for 7 days after miscarriage.
Ingredients: Danpi, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Fuling, Taoren (remove skin/husk).
Equal parts, raw grind, make pills with vinegar dough, mulberry seed-sized. Each morning, decoct 3 qian Zi Hua Yimucao (Leonuri Herba) in water, take 20 pills with it. After 7 days, switch to next formula.
Yuhuan Wan (Jade Ring Pill): Take starting day 8 after Dangbao Wan, stop at day 14.
Ingredients: Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, chopped, stir-fried with ginger, remove ginger), Danshen (remove head/tail, wine-wash/fry, each 4 liang), Quan Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 liang), Sizhi Da Xiangfu, Chishao (wine-fry, each 2 liang), Chuanxiong (child’s urine-fry), Chen Airon (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, boiled with 2 eggs until water dries, fried black, each 1 liang).
Grind seven ingredients, melt 3 liang Hei Lvpi Jiao (Equi Corium Colla) in wine, mix and pound into mulberry seed-sized pills. Take 20 pills each time.
(Note) Miscarriage causes vary; tonifying deficiency/clearing fire is known. Uterine stasis causing miscarriage is rarely discussed. These two formulas supplement gaps. Named "Dangbao," implying cleansing, but herbs are not harsh. Unlike Dangbao Tang, they are gentle.
Shenzao Tang (Divine Creation Decoction): Treats twin pregnancy where one dies due to poor nourishment. Removing dead fetus saves mother/fetus.
Ingredients: Xiezha (Crab Claws, 1 sheng), Sheng Gancao (2 chi), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 liang, add after decoction/filter).
Cook on east-facing stove with reed fire, using 1 dou east-flowing water, reduce to 2 sheng. Take at once or split twice. If unconscious, force-feed to revive.
(Note) Mr. JinSan said: "Shenzao" means divine creation. Crab claw tips expel dead fetus; Gancao stabilizes Middle Qi, preventing corpse Qi rising; Ejiao lubricates anterior yin. Numbers 1, 2, 3 denote victory; measures sheng/chi denote vessel movement; east stove denotes vital Qi; reed fire denotes lightness. For one dead/one alive twin, crab claws calm living fetus; Ejiao nurtures spirit; Gancao cultivates vital Qi. Dead exits, live stays. Truly divine.
Bupao Yin (Bladder-Repairing Drink): Treats postpartum bladder injury, dribbling urine.
Ingredients: Sheng Huang Si Juan (Raw Yellow Silk Gauze, 1 chi cut), Bai Danpi Genmu (Moutan Root Bark), Baiji (each 1 qian).
Decoct in one bowl water until gauze dissolves like syrup. Take on empty stomach. Swallow silently.
(Note) Mr. JinSan said: Pao is female bladder. Injury by midwife causes dribbling. Repair method is miraculous. Raw silk is juan; yellow enters blood; Danpi with bark enters interior; white moves Qi: both clear bladder fire, guide clear Qi to exterior apertures. Baiji is sticky/astringent, repairs internal damage. Silent swallowing works because sound activates Zang-Fu Qi; silence keeps it calm. Medicine bypasses Lung distribution, goes from stomach gate to separating clear/turbid, via fat membrane networks, infiltrating bladder outer membrane, letting Baiji protect externally.
(Commentary) Medicinal sentiment is divine; decoction/swallowing methods awaken wisdom.
Qingfujin Dan (Green Attaching Golden Pill): Treats women’s masses/lumps.
Ingredients: Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 4 liang slices, soak in 5 qian Xiaoshi [Natrii Sulfas] water); Xiangfu (4 liang crushed, soak in child’s urine); Yujin (Curcumae Radix, 2 liang smashed, soak in 5 qian Shengfan [Alumen] water); Danshen (3 liang slices, soak in ginger juice).
Grind four ingredients, make vinegar-paste pills, sesame-sized, dry, sprinkle Ejiao, shake for gloss. Coat with:
Renshen, Danggui, Chuanxiong (each 1 liang); Baizhu, Fuling, Zhi Banxia (each 2 liang); Chenpi, Zhi Cao (each 5 qian).
Grind eight ingredients, roll glossy pills in rice drink mixture, dry. Take 3 qian with boiled water.
(Note) Xue’s method, unique design. Weak patients with tangible masses cannot tolerate harsh purgatives. This is slow resolution. Six Junzi + Danggui/Chuanxiong coat protects Stomach Qi from harsh taste. As coating dissolves, active drugs reach disease site, removing pathology without harming righteousness. Essential gynecological formula.
(Commentary) Women’s menstruation/childbirth use blood, so bodies are often deficient, controlled by others, so Qi often stagnates. Stagnation condenses phlegm/stagnates blood, causing masses. Crude doctors use harsh agents for excess patterns; mediocre ones focus on tonifying righteousness, prolonging chronic disease. This formula protects Middle Qi first, containing phlegm-resolving/blood-nourishing effects. Non-destructive, ambushing enemies, protecting good/removing bad, a king’s army. Yu’s treatment of lower jiao cold hernia follows this principle. Xiong suggests applying this to all lower jiao diseases to avoid "troops passing, fence breaking" side effects.
Wuxiang Wan (Five-Fragrance Pill): Treats same as above.
Ingredients: Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces, 1 jin); Xiangfu (de-haired, 1 jin, soak in water 1 day); Hei Qianniu (Black Pharbitidis Semen), Bai Qianniu (White Pharbitidis Semen) (each take head powder 2 liang).
Before grinding, fry half lightly, keep half raw. Grind together, mix, make vinegar-paste pills, radish seed-sized. Take 7-8 fen or 1 qian with ginger tea before sleep; another dose next morning, cured. Pregnant women forbidden, children halve dose, weak use cautiously.
(Note) Wulingzhi breaks stasis/calms new; Xiangfu regulates Qi/relieves depression; Qianniu opens knots/moves phlegm/drains fluid/diuresis. Combined, it resolves masses/lumps. Not mild, but small dose for excess patterns is good. Also for phlegm/food accumulation, Qi stagnation masses, ascites, initial dysentery, if abdominal mass/pain is tangible/excess.
