The ten Heavenly Stems correspond to the locations of the "Human God" (Shen) and acupuncture/moxibustion taboos: On Jia days, the head should not be treated; on Yi days, the throat; on Bing days, the shoulder; on Ding days, the heart; on Wu days, the abdomen. On Ji days, the Spleen meridian areas; on Geng days, the waist; on Xin days, the knees; on Ren days, the Kidneys; and on Gui days, the feet—all are contraindicated for both moxibustion and needle insertion.
For the twelve Earthly Branches days, the Human God resides in the following locations: Zi day is in the eyes; Chou day is in the ears; Yin day is in the chest (some say face and mouth); Mao day is in the nose and spleen area; Chen day is in the waist; Si day is in the hands (some say head and mouth); Wu day is in the heart and abdomen; Wei day is in the feet; Shen day is in the head, extending to shoulders and waist; You day is in the back and waist; Xu day is in the throat, pharynx, and head; Hai day is in the head, extending to arms, shins, and knees.
For the twelve double-hours (Shichen), the Human God resides in: Zi hour at the ankle; Chou hour at the head; Yin hour at the ear (one theory says eyes); Mao hour at the face and ears; Chen hour at the mouth and neck; Si hour at the breasts (one theory says shoulders); Wu hour at the chest and hypochondrium; Wei hour at the abdomen; Shen hour at the heart; You hour at the knees, back, and spleen; Xu hour at the waist; Hai hour at the thighs.
There are thirty-one acupoints contraindicated for needle insertion, which must be clearly distinguished: Naohu (Brain Door, GV17), Xinhui (Confluence of Hairs, GV22), and Shenting (Spirit Palace, GV24); Luoque (Netting Away, BL8), Yuzhen (Jade Pillow, BL9), and Jiaosun (Angle Sun, TE6); Lufeng/Xuantong (referring to anterior fontanelle areas like Qianding, GV20), Chengqi (Chamber of Tears, ST1), and Chengling (Supporting Spirit, GB15); Shendao (Divine Path, GV11), Lingtai (Spirit Platform, GV10), and Danzhong (Chest Center, CV17) are forbidden for needling; Shuifen (Water Separation, CV9), Shenque (God Gate, CV8), and Huiyin (Meeting of Yin, CV1); Henggu (Horizontal Bone, KI11), Qichong (Qi Rush, ST30), and Shouwuli (Hand Five Li, LI6); Jimen (Gate of the Basket, SP11), Chengjin (Supporting Tendons, BL56), and Qingling (Green Spirit, HT8); Ruzhong (Center of Breast, CN15), and Sanyangluo (Link of Three Yangs, TE5). These twenty-three points must not be needled. Pregnant women should avoid needling Hegu (LI4); Sanyinjiao (SP6) is also widely discussed as contraindicated. Shimen (Stone Gate, CV5) should be long avoided by moxibustion or needling; if applied to women, it may cause lifelong infertility. Additionally, Yunmen (Cloud Gate, LU2) and Jiutui (Turtle Tail, CV15); Quepen (Empty Basin, ST12) and Kerenren (Guest Master, GB12/Shangguan) should not be deeply inserted; if Jianjing (GB21) is needled too deeply, the person may faint; Zusanli (ST36) urgently supplemented can restore calmness.
There are forty-seven acupoints contraindicated for moxibustion: Chengjiang (or specific ancient terms), Yamen (Yamen, GV15), and Fengfu (Wind Mansion, GV16); Jingming (Bright Eyes, BL1), Cuanzhu (Gathering Bamboo, BL2), and Yingxiang (Welcome Fragrance, LI20); Tianzhu (Heavenly Pillar, BL10), Suliao (White Ridge, GV26), Shanglinqi (Foot-Lin Qi, GB41); Naohu (GV17), eye/ear regions, Maitong (Pulse Pass, likely referring to local vessels), Heliao (Grain Hollow, SI18), Quanliao (Cheekbone Hollow, SI18), and Sizhukong (Silken Bamboo Empty, TE23); Touwei (Head Corner, ST8), Xiaguan (Lower Jaw Joint, ST7), and Renying (Human Well, ST9); Jianzhen (Shoulder Truth, SI9), Tianyou (Heavenly You, TE16), and Xinshu (Heart Shu, BL15)—all similarly contraindicated; Ruzhong (CN15), Jizhong (Spine Center, GV9), and Baihuanxu (White Ring Shu, BL30); Jiutui (CV15), Yuanye (Abyssal Armpit, GB24), and Zhourong (Zhou Glory, ST25); Fuai (Abdominal Grief, SP15), Shaoshang (Lesser Shang, LU11), and Yuji (Fish Border, LU10); Jingqu (Pulse Spring, LU8), Tianfu (Heavenly Mansion, LU3), and Zhongchong (Middle Spring, JE9); Yangchi (Yang Pool, TE4), Yangguan (Yang Gate, BL33), and Diwuhui (Earth Five Meeting, GB29); Lougu (Lou Valley, SP9), Yinlingquan (Yin Gathering Spring, SP9), and Taikou (Mouth Strip, ST38); Yinmen (Yin Gate, BL37), Zhongmai (Central Pulse, possibly Zhongji CV3 or local vessel), and Chengfu (Supporting Support, BL36) are forbidden; Futu (Riding Rabbit, ST32), Biguan (Thigh Gate, ST31), and Weizhong (Bladder Middle, BL40); Yinshi (Yin Market, ST33), and Dubi (Dog Nose, ST35) found downwards. Do not attack these points with moxa fire.
