[Xuan Feng (Hanging Wind)]
Swelling of the gingiva is called "Xuan Feng". External symptoms are treatable, but internal symptoms are critical. If ulceration extends to the pharynx and hinders diet, even miraculous medicines from Penglai are difficult to apply.
When swelling occurs below the dental alveolus, it is termed "External Xuan Feng". When it originates from within the tooth root, it is termed "Internal Xuan Feng". The area becomes red and swollen resembling a silkworm pupa, gradually elongating. Initially, use Jiao Yao (horn medicine) for holding in the mouth, insufflate Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder), and administer Zidi Tang (Purple Earth Decoction). In the early stage, a skin-breaking needle may be used; however, if the condition has persisted for a long time, needling is contraindicated. (Puncturing the red and swollen area to release blood is effective; if white and ulcerated, needling must not be used). External Xuan Feng belongs to favorable syndromes and is easy to treat; Internal Xuan Feng belongs to unfavorable syndromes and is difficult to treat. Slight delays in medical intervention can endanger life. If white ulceration spreads to the throat and the cheek muscles are completely lost, it is incurable.
[Duo Shi Feng (Snatching Food Wind)]
Also known as Qiang Shi Feng (Choking Food Wind). It manifests suddenly at the root of the tongue and the larynx. Do not panic thinking there is no method for this disease; skillful use of needles and knives can resolve it immediately.
This syndrome often arises from consuming spicy or heating foods, stirring up accumulated heat in the Lung and Stomach, leading to the sudden onset of this condition. A blood blister, or several small blisters, may appear on the epiglottis or on either side of the tongue root, rapidly enlarging and causing fullness, inability to swallow, and difficulty in breathing. Immediately puncture with a bamboo needle, allow purple blood to expectorate, and then insufficate Chilin San (Red Scale Powder) or Huisheng Dan (Revival Pill). If the blister forms deep within the larynx where needles and knives cannot reach, use an Qi Needle (air needle) to puncture Baihui (GV20), Qian Ding (DU21), and Hou Ding (DU17); the internal blister will subside naturally.
[Yu Kou Feng (Fish Mouth Wind)]
Yu Kou Feng presents with a patch of floating swelling on the lips. Heat in the Heart causes night-time moaning and groaning, with phlegm and Qi rushing upward. Physicians must treat urgently; do not wait until the condition is profound before lamenting.
When small sores appear on the upper lip, initially one or two, they start red and swollen, gradually extending to the lower lip, which also swells, along with the cheeks. If initially red, hot, and itching, followed by small yellow blisters after itching, do not use a skin-breaking needle. If located in the center of the upper lip, it is difficult to treat. If the upper lip is red, swollen, and protruding directly, it is named "Long Chu Fa" (Dragon Lip Eruption); acupuncture may be applied to the corners of the nose (Yingxiang, LI20). Another syndrome involves small white-red sores on the upper lip that are dry, with a constant desire to lick the lips with the tongue; this must not be needled. Another syndrome involves severe pain in the lips penetrating to the bone, radiating to the cheeks with unbearable pain; acupuncture may be applied to the corners of the nose. Another syndrome involves no swelling, only deviation of the mouth and eye to one side, named "Zhuan Feng" (Turning Wind); this syndrome is suitable for needling Hegu (LI4) and Jiache (ST6). For all the above syndromes, first apply Jiao Yao topically, insufficate Lvxue Dan (Green Snow Pill), and administer Zidi Tang with added Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn, now substituted with water buffalo horn). Generally, for sores on the lip skin in the early stage, do not recklessly puncture them. If mistakenly needled, the body will inevitably develop tidal fever and pain in all joints, becoming incurable. When using needles and knives, one must strictly follow regulations; never act arbitrarily. This is extremely important.
