[Formula for Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill)]
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Shuingshi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Huashi (Talcum) (each 8 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Xijiao Pian (Rhinocerotis Cornu Slice), Lingyang Pian (Saiga Tataricae Cornu Slice) (each 1 liang), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (2 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 qian), Chenxiang Xie (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Muxiang Xie (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 5 qian).
Decoct the above herbs in water, obtain a concentrated decoction, filter out the dregs, add 3 liang 6 qian of purified Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas), and simmer slowly over a gentle fire. When the water vapor is nearly exhausted and the liquid is about to coagulate, add Zhusha (Cinnabaris) and Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), each 3 qian, and 100 sheets of Jinbo (Gold Leaf). Grind finely and mix uniformly, then store for use.
This formula treats Chongshe (Re-she: swelling of the tongue resembling double tongues) and Mushe (Wooden Tongue: stiffness of the tongue). Whether applied externally or taken internally for sores on the mouth and tongue, it is effective. (Jinghua notes: This is Zixue from the *Ju Fang* [Formulas of the Bureau], only the preparation method differs slightly.) [E notes: This formula treats Jingjue (Spasm and coma) caused by the internal collapse of heat syndromes; using this can open the blockage. If the heat syndrome leans towards wind, use Zhibao Dan (Treasure of Life Pill). If heat confuses the Pericardium manifesting as delirious speech, use Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pill). If it is phlegm confusing and Qi closing, use Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill). Each syndrome has its specific formula. Why do people today, upon encountering Bi Jue (obstruction and coma), panic and frighten the patient's family, without asking whether the syndrome is due to phlegm, wind, Qi, or heat, and indiscriminately prescribe Qingxin Wan, Zhibao Dan, or Zixue Dan, thereby costing lives? A slight error leads to a huge discrepancy; one must be cautious!]
Originally named Qingxi Misuan Beiting Dan.
[Formula for San San]
Fansha (Antimony Trioxide), Renzhongbai (Urina Seca) (each 5 fen), Washang Qingtai (Green Moss on Roof Tiles), Tang Jishi (Fresh Chicken Droppings), Wasong (Sedum sarmentosum / Tile Pine) (each 1 qian).
Place the above herbs into two silver jars. Cover one jar with an empty jar mouth-to-mouth, seal tightly with salt mud, and calcine over charcoal fire until red hot. The duration should be three incense sticks. After cooling, open the jars, remove the medicine, add Shexiang (Moschus) and Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), each 1 fen, grind finely, and use. This formula is specifically for Shejun (Tongue Fungus: malignant tumor of the tongue). Prick the lesion with a magnetized needle, apply this powder, and cover it with Huyang (Pollen Typhae). This condition is extremely malignant. In the early stage, it resembles pain on the head without skin protection, being lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening. Applying this medication will naturally cause it to shrink and subside. If treatment is delayed, leading to tongue rot penetrating the cheek, it is extremely ominous, with no survivors out of a hundred.
