携李殷仲春顿首序
Medicine, since Xuanyuan (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo emphasized the livelihood of the people, has engaged in earnest dialogues to comprehend the transformations of Heaven and Earth and penetrate the principles of Yin and Yang. Its depth surpasses even the *Dianmo* (Canonical Documents) of the *Shangshu* (Book of Documents), being thoroughly exhaustive, demonstrating such caution and solemnity. Therefore, those who have mastered this path, from the Zhou dynasty through Han, Jin, Tang, Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, have produced no more than a few dozen works worthy of emulation. Each school has its own strengths, highlighting again the difficulty of this discipline. However, those endowed with superior aptitude but lacking proper lineage and transmission ultimately act rashly. In ancient times, Bian Que received secret prescriptions from Chang Sang Jun; Taicui Gong (Chunyu Yi) learned miraculous diagnostic methods from Yang Qing; Ge Hong inherited secret arts from Zheng Yin; Sun Simiao obtained immortal methods from the Dragon Palace; Li Dongyuan (Ziwei) received the orthodox transmission of Li Mingzhi through a dream; Zhu Danxi entered the door of Luo Taiwu as a humble disciple; Wang Guang'an unlocked the secrets of medicine under Dai Yuanli. Thus, the medical schools of Wuzhong inherited the authentic lineage.
Mr. Yutai enjoyed fame in the Hanlin Academy, extensively studied the Classics and History, and cherished medical texts since his youth. From the *Suwen* (Basic Questions), *Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues), *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet), and *Jiuzhen Jiayi Jing* (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion), down to the works of various philosophers, he probed their profound mysteries with precision. In his autobiography, he stated: "In my early days, when my hair began to dry [indicating early life or health condition], I admired Mr. Fan Wenzheng (Fan Zhongyan) for his intention to benefit the world, and my resolve was firm." Mr. Qiansuo, a *Xiaolian* (Filial and Incorrupt) scholar from XieLi, was a contemporary of Mr. Yutai and they shared a close bond. Mr. Qiansuo was the second son of Lord Jiansu of Shenchuan, possessing outstanding talent and magnanimous spirit, and he had a keen interest in rare books. Upon obtaining Mr. Yutai's medical treatises, he wished to disseminate them widely to benefit all within the seas, rather than keeping them secret. He repeatedly ordered talented individuals to publish them, though it remained unfulfilled for some time.
Mr. Yutai once remarked: "Since Wang Guang'an received the secrets of Dai Yuanli in WuZhong, and passed them on to subsequent sages in Qidong, the medical Dao flourished greatly." He also stated: "Works such as *Danxi Zuanyao* are not handwritten by Danxi himself; their selection is flawed. Therefore, I commissioned Gao Sheng to seek out the original manuscripts of the Zhu family and revise them anew. With skill like that of an experienced wheelwright, everything reached perfection." This book is like the waves of rivers and seas, the peaks of mountains, the sails and masts of boats, and the banners of fortifications. As a compilation of selections from various books on syndrome differentiation and treatment, how can it be neglected? Furthermore, reviewing Mr.'s discourse on fever: "The acupuncture methods for fever in the *Linghu*, *Suwen*, and *Jiuyuan Jiayi Jing* are exquisite, yet rarely understood by contemporary physicians. The meridians for tonifying and reducing the five Zang organs can be substituted by herbal medication. I intended to formulate prescriptions for each case, but feared limiting the vision of future practitioners. Thus, one can see that Mr.'s wisdom is round and divine, surpassing even previous achievements."
