Treats wind-stroke with spasticity and stiffness of the hands and feet, pain in all joints, vexation and heat in the heart with mental confusion, aversion to cold, and loss of appetite after several days.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (5 fen), Aquilegiae Radix (Duhuo, 独活) (4 fen), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛) (2 fen), Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) (2 fen), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (3 fen).
The above five herbs are decocted in six sheng of water to obtain two sheng of liquid. Divide into three warm doses. The first dose induces slight sweating; the second dose induces profuse sweating. If there is heat in the heart, add Rhizoma Coptidis (Dahuang, 大黄) (2 fen); if there is abdominal fullness, add Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) (one piece).
Song says: Wind exploits fire energy to disturb the heart center; joint pain and limb spasm indicate blocked collaterals. Two fen of Asari, four fen of Aquilegia; three fen of Scutellaria and five fen of Ephedra attack together.
Modification song says: Add two fen of Radix Puerariae (Gegen, 葛根 - *Note: Text says Huanglian/Huangqi context but song implies modification for heart heat, traditionally Huanglian or similar, but text explicitly lists 'Huang' which might be a typo for Huanglian or refers to the previous Huangqi? Context suggests adding something for heat. The text says "Er fen Huang jia xin re duan". Given the list had Huangqi, this might be a typo for Huanglian or referring to another herb not listed in main formula. However, strictly translating text: Add two fen of [Herb starting with Huang] to end heart heat.*) Eliminate abdominal fullness using single Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) one piece. For deficiency with rebellious qi, suitable to tonify with Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参); Oyster Shell (Muli, 牡蛎) subdues yang, palpitations can be calmed. Increase addition of Fructus Trichosanthis (Gualou, 栝楼) and Cornu Bubali (Shexiang/Rhino horn? Text says Xiyuan, likely Cornu Bubali Shexiang or similar cooling agent, usually Shexiang is musk, Xiyuan is Rhino Horn. In modern context, substitute used. Text says Yuanxi An, so it's commentary. The song mentions "Zeng ru lou yuan xi", meaning add Gualou and Xiyuan (Rhino Horn/Cornu Bubali)).
You Zaijing's commentary: This formula treats wind striking the Taiyang and Shaoyin meridians, protecting both yin and yang, a method to drive out pathogenic factors. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian belongs to the Spleen, governing the four limbs; spasticity and aversion to cold of the hands and feet stem from the Taiyin meridian.
Treats wind-deficiency causing heavy head and vertigo, extreme suffering such that food taste is unknown; warms muscles and tonifies the middle, benefits essence and qi.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (2 liang), Prepared Radix Aconiti Lateralis (Fuzi, 附子) (1.5 pieces, processed, peeled), Processed Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (3 liang, honey-fried).
The above three herbs are chopped. Each time take five qianbi (a measure), add five slices of Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) and one Jujube (Dazao, 大枣). Decoct in one and a half cups of water until seven parts remain, strain, and take warm.
Song says: One dose divided into five servings of five qianbi each; five slices of ginger and one jujube as bait. One and a half pieces of Fuzi suppress wind-deficiency; remember Baizhu two liang and Gancao one liang as sovereign herbs.
Yu Jiayan said: This formula uses no wind-dispelling herbs at all. It merely uses Fuzi to warm the Water organ (Kidney), and Baizhu and Gancao to warm the Earth organ (Spleen). Once the Water and Earth are warmed, turbid yin descends naturally.
Treats Hongjiao (Gout/Feet weakness) ascending into the lower abdomen causing numbness. (This is Shenqi Wan, see Women's Miscellaneous Diseases.)
(Song appears in Water-Qi Disease chapter.) Treats extreme heat in flesh, resulting in depletion of body fluids, opening of cou-li (pores) and profuse sweating, contracting severe wind pathogens, descending...
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (6 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (0.5 jin), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (2 liang), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) (3 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (4 liang), Jujube (Dazao, 大枣) (torn open).
The above six herbs are decocted in six sheng of water. First boil Mahuang, remove the foam on top, then add the remaining herbs. Boil to obtain three sheng of liquid. Divide into three warm doses. If there is aversion to wind, add one piece of Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子).
You Zaijing's commentary: The Baizhu, Gancao, Shengjiang, and Dazao in the formula serve to maintain the root of righteous qi, preventing yang from escaping with sweat and yin from transforming with heat. Adding Fuzi for aversion to wind is to prevent the collapse of yang.
