Mu Fang Ji (3 liang), Guizhi (2 liang), Fuling, Renshen (each 4 liang), Mangxiao (3 he).
The above five herbs. Boil in 6 sheng of water. Decoct to obtain 2 sheng. Remove the dregs. Add Mangxiao. Simmer slightly again. Divide into two warm doses. Slight diarrhea indicates cure.
Song says: Add 4 liang of Fuling and do not use Shigao. Mangxiao 3 he displays wondrous strategy. When Qi moves and then gathers, know it is excess. Using softness to grind hardness requires no effort.
Wei Nianting said. The reason for removing Shigao and adding Mangxiao from the previous formula is that since the pathogenic factor has scattered and re-aggregated, there are solid substances remaining as a capsule. Therefore, use hard to attack hard.
Treats Zhiyin (fluid retention with branching distribution) under the heart. The patient suffers from severe vertigo and dizziness. This formula is indicated.
Zexie (5 liang), Baizhu (2 liang).
The above two herbs. Boil in 2 sheng of water. Decoct to obtain 1 sheng. Divide into two warm doses.
Song says: In the position of clear Yang, fluid pathogens take advantage. Vertigo and dizziness occur frequently, suffering is unbearable. Zexie 5 liang as Sovereign herb, Baizhu 2 liang. Tonifying Spleen and controlling water has miraculous ability.
Disciple Lin Lifeng notes. The Heart is Yang within Yang. The head is the convergence of all Yang meridians. Human Yang Qi is like the Sun in the sky. Because of the Sun, Heaven is bright.
Converging at the head. Therefore, Zexie Tang is used as the main treatment. Presumably, Zexie has sweet and cold properties. Growing in water, obtaining Yin Qi of water, it can promote urination. One stem grows straight up, able to go from below to above. Seeking same Qi, it leads the Yin Qi of water downward. However, fearing that Water Qi will rise again after going down, Baizhu's sweet and warm nature is used to fortify Earth and control Water to block it.
Regarding the eyes... extinguish. However, those who master this way...
Treats Zhiyin causing chest fullness. This formula is indicated.
Houpo (1 chi), Dahuang (6 liang), Zhishi (4 pieces).
The above three herbs. Boil in 5 sheng of water. Decoct to obtain 2 sheng. Divide into two warm doses.
Song says: The chest is a Yang position, similar to the sky. Zhiyin fills the chest, causing fullness and obstruction. 1 chi Houpo as Sovereign herb regulates Qi compartment. 4 pieces Zhishi and 6 liang Dahuang attack.
Yuanxi notes. Zhiyin refers to having distinct branches. The chest is the pathway of Yang Qi. Fluid retention is a Yin pathogen. Speaking of chest fullness means Yin occupies the Yang position.
Filling and blocking the chest causes fullness. Using Houpo as Sovereign herb, bitter taste and warm nature, it is a herb for Qi compartment. Bitter descends and warms opens, allowing Yang Qi to flow freely, thus transforming the fluid retention in the chest. Zhishi is round and fragrant; fragrance awakens the Spleen; roundness implies rotation, so it is used as an Assistant herb. Followed by Dahuang, directly opening the Earthly Path (intestines). Once the Earthly Path is open, how can fluid retention not flow down and exit?
Another note. Xiao Chengqi Tang uses Qi-regulating herbs as Ministers. This formula uses Qi-regulating herbs as Sovereigns. The intent is that when Qi moves, Water also moves. The meaning is profound. Sanwu Tang, Xiao...
