(The rhyme is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.) A pulse that is deep and wiry indicates internal pain due to suspended fluid (Xuan Yin, a type of fluid retention causing pain). For patients with suspended fluid, this decoction is the primary treatment.
*Hua Er Hua* (Kadsura Longipedunculata Fruit), *Gan Sui* (Euphorbia Lathyris Root), *Da Ji* (Euphorbia Pekinensis Root), *Da Zao* (Jujube Fruit).
Commentary by Chen Yuanxi: A deep pulse indicates an interior syndrome; a wiry pulse indicates fluid retention. When ingested water condenses and suspends between the chest and diaphragm, it causes coughing that draws pain from within. Once suspended fluid has formed,
if treated slowly, it will inevitably spread and proliferate. Therefore, *Shi Zao Tang* (Ten Jujube Decoction) is urgently used to reach the disease site directly, without hesitation regarding its harsh nature. The intent is to attack immediately upon initial formation, directing the fluid downward to prevent complications of stagnation and pain.
(The rhyme is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.)
*Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba), *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), *Xingren* (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum), *Shengjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), *Dazao* (Jujubae Fructus).
(The rhyme is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.) In treating overflowing fluid (Yi Yin, fluid retention spreading to the limbs), sweating should be induced. *Da Qing Long Tang* (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction) is the primary treatment. *Xiao Qing Long Tang* (Minor Blue Green Dragon Decoction) is also indicated.
*Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba), *Shaoyao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba), *Xixin* (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), *Ganjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus), *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), *Wuweizi* (Schisandrae Fructus).
Commentary by Chen Yuanxi: The Master stated: "When drinking water flows and accumulates in the four limbs, and sweating should occur but does not, resulting in body pain and heaviness, it is called overflowing fluid." Therefore, for those suffering from overflowing fluid,
sweating methods are employed to treat...
To treat branch fluid (Zhi Yin, fluid retention in the epigastrium/chest) between the diaphragm: The patient suffers from wheezing and fullness, epigastric stiffness and hardness, dark complexion, and a deep, tight pulse. After dozens of days of illness, if the physician mistakenly used emetic or purgative methods,
this decoction is used. If the patient is deficient, they will recover; if the patient is excess, relapse may occur after three days. If repeated administration fails, it is appropriate to use this decoction modified by removing *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum) and adding *Fuling* (Poria) and *Mangxiao* (Natrii Sulfas).
*Mufangji* (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (3 liang), *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum) (2 pieces, size of chicken eggs), *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (2 liang), *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (4 liang).
The above four ingredients are boiled in 6 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain. Divide into two doses and take warm.
The rhyme states: Wheezing, fullness, stiffness, hardness, darkened face; Fangji three, Guizhi two, four parts Renshen. Two pieces of Shigao like chicken eggs, bitter, pungent, cold, and warm each suitably.
Commentary by Chen Yuanxi: *Mufangji* enters the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin. The Lung governs Qi; when Qi transforms, fluids move naturally. *Guizhi* enters the Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang. The Bladder governs water;
when water moves, epigastric stiffness and hardness can be resolved. However, since the illness has persisted for dozens of days and has been subjected to emesis and purgation, it is known that Stomach Yin is damaged and deficient Qi rebels upward. Therefore, *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) is used to regenerate the damaged Yin,
and *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum) is used to calm the rebellious Qi. Once Yin is restored and rebellion is pacified, symptoms such as wheezing and darkened complexion will heal spontaneously. This formula addresses the root cause and remedies medical errors, being comprehensive in its approach.
