Treats postpartum wind-stroke that persists for dozens of days without resolution. Symptoms include slight headache, alternating aversion to cold and fever, epigastric fullness, dry retching, and sweating. Even if the duration is long, as long as Yangdan Syndrome (Guizhi Tang Syndrome) remains present, this formula may be administered. (This refers to Guizhi Tang with increased dosage of Cinnamon Twig and added Aconite. Commercial editions erroneously state the addition of Scutellaria Root; this is incorrect as the composition is clearly stated in the Taiyang Chapter of Shanghan Lun. Sun Simiao and other experts were mistaken. See Guizhi Tang under the chapter on Pregnancy Diseases.)
Commentary by Nan Yuanxi: Headache, fever, aversion to cold, and sweating are exterior symptoms of the Taiyang channel. Epigastric fullness arises from the diffusion of Taiyang water-damp pathogenic factors into the epigastrium.
For postpartum wind-stroke presenting with fever, a distinctly red face, wheezing, and headache, this decoction is indicated.
Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf, one handful), Gegen (Kudzu Root, three liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, each one liang), Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece).
The above ten ingredients are boiled in ten dou of water until two and a half sheng remain. Divide into three warm doses. Cover with blankets to induce mild sweating. If neck stiffness is present, use a large Fuzi (one piece).
Song verse:
Wheezing, heat, headache, and a red face indicate (the potential progression to Jing disease).
One liang each of Fangfeng, Jiegeng, Guizhi, Gancao, and Renshen are used together.
Gegen (three liang, raw) is added.
Modification song verse:
For neck stiffness, a large Fuzi is required; changing from small to large alters the nature.
For vomiting due to rebellious Qi, additional herbs should be considered: Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, half sheng, washed seven times).
Cheng Yunlai states: Although the condition has not yet progressed to opisthotonos (back arching), the presence of fever, flushed face, and headache indicates an early stage of Feng Jing (Wind-induced Spasm). Therefore, Zhu Ye is used to treat Wind Jing, Fangfeng treats internal spasm, Gegen treats Gang Jing (Stiff Spasm), Guizhi treats Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) disperses wind pathogens, and Jiegeng removes wind-bi obstruction. This is a formula utilizing acrid flavors to disperse. It is assisted by Renshen to generate fluids and nourish the sinews, and Fuzi to tonify Fire to facilitate Water transformation. Combined with Gancao to harmonize the various herbs, and Dazao (Jujube Fruit) to assist the twelve channels. Compared to other wind-dispelling formulas, this formula combines release with tonification, serving as a major prescription for postpartum wind-stroke.
