(See the chapter on Spasm) Treats cases where the patient can eat, but after seven or eight days, fever recurs. This indicates excess heat in the stomach; this decoction is appropriate for treatment.
(See the chapter on Cold Cramp) Treats abdominal pain occurring postpartum.
Primarily treats postpartum abdominal pain accompanied by irritability, fullness, and inability to lie down.
Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), roasted until blackened but not overdone. Shao Yao (White Peony Root), equal parts.
Crush these two herbs into a powder. Administer one "fang cun bi" (a measure roughly equivalent to a teaspoon) per dose, three times daily. It also primarily treats abscesses and pus formation. Take with Barley Porridge.
The verse states: Irritability, fullness, insomnia, frequent abdominal pain; Zhi Shi lightly roasted, Shao Yao in equal balance. The Lamb Meat Decoction should be viewed inversely (That treats deficiency pain; this treats excess pain).
Usage: Mix as a powder and take with water.
Commentary by Chen Wei: Zhi Shi regulates Qi stagnation, Shao Yao regulates Blood stagnation. When there is free flow, there is no pain, which is common knowledge. The subtlety lies in roasting Zhi Shi until black, utilizing the fire transformation to enhance its ability to attack and expel pathogens.
Treats postpartum abdominal pain; according to the method, one should first use Zhi Shi Shao Yao San. If it does not heal, this indicates blood stasis adhering below the umbilicus; this formula is appropriate.
Menstrual flow is obstructed/unsmooth.
Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), 3 liang. Tao Ren (Peach Seed), 20 pieces. E Chong (Ground Beetle), 20 pieces, remove feet and roast.
Grind these three herbs into powder. Mix with refined honey to form four pills. Boil one pill in one sheng of wine, reduce to eight ge, and administer at once. Fresh blood resembling pig liver will be discharged. (Versions vary slightly).
The verse states: Pain fixed at the umbilicus is due to stasis; 20 peach seeds and 3 liang rhubarb. Plus 20 ground beetles; boiling in wine and purging heavily causes no harm.
Commentary by Chen Yuanxi: If taking Zhi Shi Shao Yao San fails to resolve the condition, it is not due to Qi accumulation and stagnation, but rather consolidated blood stasis that has not dispersed. Use this formula to attack it. In this formula, Da Huang and Tao Ren... [text fragment] ... taste bitter.
(See the chapter on Spasm) Treats postpartum cases of seven or eight days duration, presenting without Taiyang syndrome symptoms, but with hardness and pain in the lower abdomen. This is due to incomplete expulsion of lochia. Constipation, irritability, and fever are present.
Palpation reveals a pulse that is slightly firm/excess. Fever doubles in intensity. Irritability worsens during the Shen hour (15:00-17:00). The patient cannot eat; eating leads to delirious speech. Symptoms improve at night. This decoction is appropriate for treatment. The heat is internal, and the constraint is in the Bladder.
Commentary by Sun Xin Dian: Absence of Taiyang symptoms means no exterior disease. A slightly firm pulse, irritability, fever, and delirium upon eating indicate Stomach heat. Incomplete expulsion of lochia... stasis removed...
