Jue deafness (Deafness due to Qi reversal) refers to deafness caused by the reversal of Qi in the meridians. Chao Yuanfang stated: When the Qi of the Zang-Fu organs reverses upward, it is called "Jue" (reversal). When Jue Qi contends and invades the meridians entering the ear, it causes deafness. If the Qi of the Hand-Shaoyang meridian moves and reverses, the symptom is a buzzing sound in the ears; if the Hand-Taiyang meridian reverses causing deafness, the symptom is deafness accompanied by a sensation of fullness of Qi in the ear. However, the symptoms of Jue deafness are mostly caused by the reversal of Liver and Gallbladder Qi. The onset is usually sudden, as the Liver and Gallbladder are prone to Qi reversal, and their Qi tends to be violent. Treatment can employ Longhui Wan (Dragon Brain Pill) to purge the Liver and Gallbladder and descend rebellious Qi; the formula contains acrid and aromatic herbs that can unblock orifice.
Longhui Wan (Dragon Brain Pill)
Danggui (Baked Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Longdancao (Wine-washed Gentianae Radix), Shanzhi (Stir-fried Gardeniae Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Lvhui (Aloe), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) (each 0.5 liang), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (2.5 qian), Shexiang (Moschus) (5 fen, separately ground).
Made into pills the size of tung tree seeds with refined honey. Take with ginger decoction, 20-30 pills per dose. Remove Dahuang if stool is not hard. Another version excludes Huanglian and Huangbai, adding Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Dansheng (Arisaematis Cum Bile).
Mich transmitted Jiangqi Tang (Descending Qi Decoction) added with Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) treats deafness due to Qi stagnation, with great efficacy. (Formula see Qi Gate section.)
The Kidney stores Essence, and its Qi connects to the ear. When Kidney deficiency leads to scant Essence, the Qi cannot ascend to the ear, resulting in deafness and poor hearing. The Classics state: "Loss of Essence causes deafness." The symptoms include black discoloration of the cheeks and zygomatic arches, emaciation, fatigue, mental confusion, and worsening upon exertion; this is also called Lao deafness (Deafness due to overwork).
Roucongrong Wan (Cistanche Pill)
Roucongrong (Soaked in wine overnight, sliced and baked), Fuzi (Processed Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, skin and navel removed), Shanzhuyu (Stir-fried Corni Fructus), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix, heart removed), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, roots removed), Gan Shudi (Baked Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, soaked in wine overnight, separately ground), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Chuangszi (Cnidii Fructus, stir-fried), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, soaked in wine), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, soaked in rice water overnight), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang), Yangshen (Sheep Kidney, one pair, remove fascia, roast).
Made into pills the size of tung tree seeds with honey. Take 20 pills per dose after meals with warm wine, gradually increasing to 30 pills, three times daily. Another version includes Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma); making pills with wine paste is also acceptable.
Yishen San (Kidney-Benefiting Powder) treats Kidney deficiency deafness.
Cishi (Hematitum, processed), Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix), Chuanjiao (Szechwan Pepper Fruit) (each 1 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind all into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Use one pig kidney, finely chopped, mixed with scallion white, a little salt, and the medicine. Wrap tightly in ten layers of wet paper and bake until fragrant and cooked. Chew on an empty stomach and swallow with wine. Another version includes Fuzi but excludes Chenxiang and Shichangpu.
Da'an Shen Wan (Great Peace Kidney Pill) added with Cishi (Hematitum), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) is effective. (Pill see Asthma Gate section.)
I recall the son of Mr. Ge Yuting, who was in his teens. After suffering from smallpox, his hearing gradually deteriorated. Day by day it worsened, becoming almost indistinguishable from deafness. His teacher, Xue Yupiao, diagnosed: "This must be because the smallpox affected the Kidney meridian. Fortunately, it resolved, but the Kidney Qi is deficient, hence the progressive worsening. I will plan treatment based on Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia)." He added 3 liang of walnut meat (purple coat) stir-fried with salt water, 3 liang of Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) stir-fried with salt water, and 2 liang of Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma). Made into pills with honey, taken with boiled water. One course cured him. (Recorded by Henian)
